This invention relates to embossing machines. An object of this invention is to provide a machine ofthe character described having means for periodically pressing a movable platen carrying an object to be embossedagainst a stationary platen and automatically feeding a strip of foil with respect to the stationary platen for the embossing operation. 1
.A further object of this invention is to provide a compact and strong machine of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, comprise few and simple parts, which shall be positive and smooth in operation and withal practical and eificient to a high degree in use. a 1
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the fea-. tures of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will-be exemplified inthe construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, desview taken on line ignates an embossing machine embodying the invention here shown to comprise a frame or support 11 having spaced parallel upstanding side walls 11a and 11b. Mounted in suitable bearings on said. walls 11a and 11b is a rotary shaft 12 tending beyond thewall 1111 as at 13 andhaving,
fixed thereto a pinion 14. The shaft 12 extends beyond the wall 11a as at 15 and fixed to saidex- Rotatably mounted onthe frame walls 11a and 111 13 a second shaft 22paralle1 to the shaft 12; and fixed to the outer ends thereof are discs 23 and 24provided with peripheral gear teeth mesh-- ing with the pinions 16 and14 respectively The discs 23 and 24 are provided with aligned eccentrically disposed pins 25 for the purpose lier'e inafter appearing.
Pivoted to the pins 25 are a pair of similar" connecting rods or links 28, 28a. The opposite ends of the links are pivoted to opposite sides of a member 29 received between said connecting rods and carrying a movable platen 30 on which is mounted the member or sheet 31 to be embossed. The member 29 is provided with a curved undersurface 32 adapted to roll on a fiat horizontal surface 33 formed on the frame 11. Extending downwardly from the underside of the member 29 is a curved arm 34 formed with a slot 35 receiving therethrough a pin 36 fixedly mounted on the frame or support 11.
It will now be understood that'as the shaft 12 is rotated the discs 23 and 24 will cause rolling movement of the member 29 on the surface 33 for bringing the platen 30 periodically to substantially vertical position, the pin 36 engaged within the slot 35 acting as a guide for said member 29 during the movement thereof. The support 11 is provided with a verticaltransverse wall or portion 40 having parallel side flanges 41 slidably receivingtherebetween the stationary platen 42. Aligned inwardly extending projections 43 at the bottom ends of the flanges 41 serve to support the platen 42 in proper position.
The platen 42 comprises a four-sided frame portion 45 having an integral web partition or wall 46 forming chambers on opposite sides thereof. Attached to the rear surface of the wall 46 are a plurality of electric heating units 48 of i any suitable construction and connected by wiring 49 to a pair of parallel prong contacts 50. The wall 40 may be provided with an extension 51 at the bottom end thereof and attached thereto is an electric socket 52 connected by wiring 53 to any suitable source of electric current. The socket 52 is so positioned as toreceive the contacts when the platen 42 is slidably moved between vthe guides 41. After the platen 42 has been inserted on the support 40 and between the flanges 41,-a hook 50a pivoted to the upper end of the support 40 may beswung into engagement with the platen to retain the same on its support.
Mounted on the front surface of the wall 46 is a; member 55 carrying the engraving 56 and supported on said platen by blocks 58 interposed between said member and the frame 45. They movable platen 30 ismoved periodically substantially into contact with the engraved device on the stationary platen42.
Means is provided for feeding a strip 60 of foil or carrying metallic powder such as gold powder between the engraved device 56 and the member 31 to be embossed. To this end there is fixed to the outer surface of the wall 11a a grooved or slotted guide 62 slidably receiving a substantially vertical bar 64 formed with rack teeth 65 adjacent the upper end thereof. The bar 64 is provided with a plurality of openings 6'! disposed to either side of the link :28. Attached to a pair of said openings are parallel pins or rollers 69 so positioned that during the operation of the machine as the shaft 12 rotates, movement of the link 28 will cause the latter to contact the pins 69 for reciprocating the racked bar 64. Extending upwardly from the support 40 on opposite sides thereof and forming continuations of the flanges 41 are brackets 70 and 7061. provided with two pairs of aligned bearing openings. Rotatably mounted on one pair of aligned bearing openings is a shaft 71 having a knurled roller 72 thereon. Rotatably mounted on the other pair of aligned bearing openings is a shaft 74 on which is mounted a rubber roller 75 contacting the knurled roller 72. The shaft 71 extends beyond the bracket 70a as at 76, said extending portion being received in a housing 760, fixed to said bracket. Loosely mounted on said portion '76 is a gear 77 having a hub 78 formed with ratchet teeth. 7 Received on and keyed to said portion 76 of the shaft for rotation therewith and sliding movement with respect thereto is a clutch member '7 9 having ratchet teeth 80 adapted to cooperate with the teeth of the hub 78. A spring 81 mounted on said shaft portion 78 serves to normally retain the clutch member 79 in contact with the hub 78. The racked portion 65 of the bar 64 slidably extends within housing 76a and the teeth thereof mesh with the teeth of said gear '77.
It will now be understood that as the racked bar 64 moves upwardly, the teeth of the hub 78 engaging the teeth 80 will cause rotation of the clutch member 79 for rotating the shaft '71. Downward movement of the rod 64 will cause free rotation of the gear 77 without rotating the shaft '71.
Secured at the bottom of the support 11 and between walls 11 and 11b is a container 83 on which there is rotatably mounteda shaft 84 carrying a roll 85 from which there unwinds the foil strip 60. The strip 60 passes upwardly over the engraved member 56 and passes between the rollers '72 and 75.
For guiding the strip 60 during the feeding operation, there is provided a member 86 made of sheet material and having flanges 87 at the top and bottom received between the platen 55 and the top and bottom blocks 58, and a vertical portion 88 formed with a central opening 89. The flanges 87 are formed with slots 89a adjacent the portion 89 for receiving the strip 60. The strip thus passes upwardly through the bottom opening 89a over the engraved portion 56 which projects somewhat into the opening 89 and then through the upper slot 89a.
During operation of the machine rotation of the knurled roller 72 will cause the strip to be intermittently fed to present new portions for the embossing operation. The heater elements 48 serve to heat the engraved plate 56 for heating the'foil so that when the member 29 presses the sheet 31 to be embossed against the foil, the pressing' combined with the heat will cause an embossing operation; Each time the member 29 swings away from the support 40, a new sheet or member 31 to be embossed is placed thereon and after each member is embossed the strip of foil is fed from the roll 85 to present new foil for embossing.
Means is provided for rendering the foil feeding means inoperative. To this end the housing 76a is provided with a slot 90 and extending through said slot is a lever 91 pivoted to a wall of said housing as at 93 and having a yoke 94 engaging the clutch '79. The member 91 is provided with a handle 95 extending outside of the casing. Thus the feeding mechanism can be placed out of operation by swinging the handle 95 in a counterclockwise direction, looking at Fig. 2, for disengaging the clutch 79 from the hub 78. A pawl 96 pivoted to the housing pressed by a spring 97 may engage the handle 95 to retain the same in declutching position.
Instead of the pins 69, any other suitable connection may be employed between the link 28 and the bar ea for causing reciprocation of the latter during the operation of the machine.
Obviously, instead of a foil strip, a paper strip having gold or other powder on one surface, may be employed.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a de vice in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a. limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An embossing machine comprising a frame, a shaft rotatably mounted on said frame, a pinion fixed to said shaft, a gear rotatably mounted on said frame and meshing with said pinion, a stationary platen mounted on said frame, a member carrying a movable platen movably mounted on said frame, a connecting link interconnecting said gear and said member for causing movement of the member as said gear rotates to bring the movable platen against the stationary platen, and means operatively connected to said connecting link for feeding a strip between said platens, said means comprising a bar slidably mounted on said frame, pins attached to said bar and adapted to contact opposite sides of said link, a portion of said bar being formed with rack teeth, a roller rotatably mounted on said frame, clutch means operatively connected to said bar for rotating said roller,-a roll mounted on said frame, the strip from said roll extending between said platens and engaging said roller.
2. An embossing machine comprising a frame, a shaft rotatably mounted thereon, a pinion fixed to said shaft, means for rotating said shaft, a gear rotatably mounted on said frame and meshing with said pinion, an eccentric pin on said gear, a stationary platen mounted on said frame, a member carrying a movable platen mounted for rolling movement on said frame, a connecting link interconnecting said eccentric pin with said member, a rack bar mounted for sliding movement on said frame, pins attached to said bar and disposed on opposite sides of the connecting link and adapted to be contacted thereby during the operation of the machine for causing reciprocation of said bar, a roller rotatably mounted on said frame, and clutch mechanism connecting said roller with said racked-bar.
3. An embossing machine comprising a frame, a shaft rotatably mounted thereon, a pinion fixed to said shaft, means for rotating said shaft, a gear rotatably mounted on said frame and meshing with said pinion, an eccentric pin on said gear, a stationary platen mounted on said frame, a member carrying a movable platen mounted for rolling movement on said frame, a connecting link interconnecting said eccentric pin with said member, a rack bar mounted for sliding movement on said frame, pins attached to said bar and disposed on opposite sides of the connecting link and adapted to be contacted thereby during the operation of the machine for causing reciprocation of said bar, a roller rotatably mounted on said frame, clutch mechanism connecting said roller with said racked bar, and means for declutching said roller from said racked bar.
4. An embossing machine comprising a frame, a shaft rotatably mounted thereon, a pinion fixed to said shaft, means for rotating said shaft, a gear rotatably mounted on said frame and meshing with said pinion, an eccentric pin on said gear, a stationary platen mounted on said frame, a connecting link interconnecting said eccentric pin with said member, a rack bar mounted for sliding movement on said frame, pins attached to said bar and disposed on opposite sides of the connecting link and adapted to be contacted thereby during the operation of the machine for causing reciprocation of said bar, a roller rotatably mounted on said frame, clutch mechanism connecting said roller with said racked bar, and means for declutching said roller from said racked bar, a second roller rotatably mounted on said frame and contacting said first roller and a flexible strip received between said platens and gripped between said rollers.
