Be it known that 1, JOHN TV. VALDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indicators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in indicators and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with railway train orders and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this character having novel and improved means whereby an en ineer, conductor, or other member of a train crew can be reminded of the different points on a run of a train for which orders have been received so that the possibility of accidents, such as head on or rear end collisions, owing to forgetfulnes will be substantially eliminated.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved indicator of this general character consisting of a casing provided with a chart denoting the various stations on a train run or division together with adjustable and removable indices co-acting with said chart to identify certain stations or points for which train orders have been issued.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved indicator wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

As disclosed in the accompanying drawlngs 1 denotes a plate of predetermined di mensions and preferably rectangular in form and which has its lower horizontal marginal portion provided with a forwardly directed flange 2 with which suitable means 2 is adapted to coact for maintaining the plate 1 in applied position. In practice it is preferred that the device be suitably positioned in close proximity to the steam and air gage on a locomotive or in a coach or caboose near the conductors desk so that the engineer, conductor or other member of the train crew will have the device substantially constantly displayed before their gaze.

The end marginal portions of the plate 1 is provided with the forwardly directed flanges 3 and the outer longitudinal margin of each of said end flanges 3 is provided with an inturned supplemental flange 4 and which flange 4 is herein disclosed as of double thickness. The upper marginal portion of the plate 1 has hingedly connected thereto as at 5 the top plate T which is adapted to overlie the upper end portions of the end flanges 3 and to close the upper portion of the case or container as afforded by the plate 1 and the bottom flange 2 and the end flanges 3. The flanges a terminate a predetermined distance above the bottom flange 2.

Disposed longitudinally of the case or container is the partition plate 6 parallel to the plate 1 and provided at its ends with the forwardly directed flanges 7 secured to the end flanges 3. The outer marginal portions of the flanges 7 are provided with the inwardly directed flanges 8 also of double thickness. Each of the flanges 8 is in predetermined spaced relation relative to the adjacent flange t to afford a guideway to snugly receive the transparent plate 9 adapted to overlie the forward faces of the casing or container. The lower ends of the flanges and 8 are substantially flush and the space therebetween is closed by the plate 10 or the like whereby the downward movement of the transparent plate 9 is limited and which serves to maintain the lower marginal portions of said plate spaced a predetermined distance above the bottom flange 2. An indicator comprising a container having one face open, a transparent plate substantially closing the open face of the container but terminating a distance above the lower wall of the container, a partition plate arranged within the container to afford a rear compartment, a chart, means for supporting the chart in front of the partition plate, a rod supported by the sides of the container below the transparent plate, an index detachably and slidably engaged with the rod and of a length to extend rearwardly of the transparent plate and to overlie the chart positioned in advance of the partition, and a hinged closure member for the top of the container.

An indicator comprising a plate, a for wardly directed flange carried by a longitudinal margin of the plate, forwardly directed flanges carried by the end margin of the plate, inwardly directed flanges carried by said last named flanges, a partition plate interposed between the end flanges and spaced relatively to the first named plate, forwardly directed flanges carried by the ends of the partition plate and secured to the end flanges of the partition plate and spaced relatively to the inwardly directed flanges of the end flanges, a transparent plate slidably engaged between the inwardl directed flanges of the end flanges and the partition plate, a chart supported in advance f having one face open, a transparent plate substantially closing the open face of the container but terminating a distance above the lower wall of the container, a chart, means for supporting the chart rearwardly of the transparent plate, a rod supported by the sides of the container below the transparent plate, said rod being angular in cross section and having its forward face arranged on a bevel, an index having an end portion provided with relatively movable jaws detachablv and slidably engageable with the rod, said index being of a length to overlie the chart, the jaws of the index member frictionally engaging the rear and forward faces of the rod, the free end portion of the jaw engaging the forward face of the rod being provided with a forwardly directed finger.
