Be it known that I, EDWARD LOUIS KLINGEL, al citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Train-Check Holders, of which the following is a specification.

It is customary for conductors on trains to issue a check to each passenger upon receipt of his fare, said check being marked to indicate the passengers destination and .displayed near his seat so that the conductor may avoid confusion4 in collecting fares and discharging passengers. Numerous appliances embodyingvsoine form'of spring-bar or the like have been employed to receive such tickets. usually'placed upon the window frames of cars,are frequently injured by careless and mischievous passengers and are often rendered inoperative through the weakening or fouling of the parts thereof, thereby resulting in the necessity of improvised means for holding the train checks-` A conductor is thus often obliged to fold the lticket to it a defective holder, or fasten the check to a window curtain by meansy of a paper clip or pin, or, as is often done, disturb a passenger by inserting a check in the band of his hat.

It is the object of my present invention to provide a self contained device of this nature, so designed that all moving arts are protected and free from fouling y fragments of tickets or other matter.

A further object is to supply a holder of this character embodyinor a self compensating gripping device, whereby checks may be severally inserted therein or withdrawn therefrom without disturbing other checks secured within said holder.

A further object is to provide a device of this kind, which is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction and pleasing in appearance.

These and other objects will more fully hereinafter appear.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that my improved holder comprises a base A and a grip B carried by said base. The base consists of a barrel 10 closed by an end wall 11 at the rear thereof and supplied at its forward end with an annular flange 12, the edge of which is turned back to form a rim 13.y The grip B includes a post 14: having a reduced threaded portion 15 at one end and a disk or head 16, forming a stationary grip member, concentric with the other end of the post. Said reduced end l5 is inserted in a central aperture v17 in the wall v11 of the base and is supplied with a nut 18, which draws the shoulder 19 on the post firmly against said wall and rigidly secures said post in axial position within said barrel 10. An annulus 20, forming a movable grip member, is carriedupon said post, the central aperture 21 `in the annulus being suiiiciently large to freely receive the post. thus allowing said annulus to slide and tilt upon said post. The margin 22 of the face of said annulus adjacent said head 16 is beveled. as shown, and

an expansion spring 23 coiledabout the post and interposed between the wall 11 and annulus 20 yieldingly presses said annulus against the head 16. The parts are so proportioned that the rim of the annulus lies within the plane of the Hang@ 12 and the inner face of the head 16 lies slightly without said plane.

In installing my device, a bore is preferably formed in the frame of a car to receive the barrel 10 of the base and said base is preferably secured upon said frame by means of screws 24 passing through apertures in the flange 12.

In use, the edge of a ticket is wedged between the beveled face 22 of the annulus 20 and the rear face of the head 16 (Fig. 1) and removably held in such position by the action of the spring 23. Said annulus 16 is self adjusting, thus permitting the insertion of several tickets at different points in the grip and also permitting the withdrawal of said tickets, severally, without releasing the remaining tickets.

It will be noted that the ange 12 forms an annular guide to direct the insertion of tickets into the grip and that the intmned rim 1301i the flange 12 raises said dange with respect to the surface of the frame to which the holder is attached, thereby7 permitting easy access to said holder.

Having described my invention, what i claim as nenv and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:Y

1. ln a check holder, a base having an an# nular recess therein7 a post rigidlE,T secured at one end to the base and passing axially through said recess, a fixed annular grip member concentricalljyT secured on the other end of said post and resting adjacent to the mouth of said recess, a movable annular grip member mounted uponsaid post7 said member being inclosed Within said recess and adapted to slide and tilt upon the post and a spring coiled about the post and interposed between said' base and movable grip member to yieldinglv hold the latter against said iiXed grip member.

2. ln a check holder, a base having an annular recess therein, a post rigidly secured at one end to the base and passing axially through said recess, a iixed annular grip member concentrically secured upon the other end of said post and resting adjacent to the mouth or said recess, a movable annular grip member mount-ed upon said post, said member being inclosed Within said recess and adapted to slide and tilt upon the post, a spring coiled about the post and interposed betweenY said base and movable grip member to yieldingly hold the latter against said fixed grip member and an annular liange on said base forming a guide to facilitate the insertion o1 checks between said members.
