My invention relates to improvements in locks tor paper towel holders and the like.

The. object of my invention is to provide a. lock for roll holders of this character in which the roll is locked in the holder until it. is entirely used up and thus prevent the stealing of the paper from the holder.-

Another object of my invention is to provide a simple cheap and effective lock of this character which can be readily applied to any of the well-known roll holders. and having certain details of structure and operation hereinafter more fully described.

In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is av front view of a roll holder showing the roll in section and showing my lock ap lied. -l ig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view show ing the. two parts of urvlock in their separate. relation. Fig. is a vertical sectional view of the locking means carried by one of the plates.

Referring now to the drawing. l represents an ordiuarv holder for towels and the like and which comprises a spring i e 1. having the loops 2. formed as shown. and the wire of said loop extending downwardly at 3 and -l-. forming the verticallv disposed aruis, as clearly shown at Fig. l of the drawing. The; lower ends of the. wires of th o arms 3 and l are. coded lornung the two contrslmped members 5 and 6, which are adapted to enter the core 7 of the roll of paper 8, and allowing the paper to freely. rot-ate thereon. By this structure, it will be seen that the cores 5 and 6 frictionally engage the core of the roll 8. and hold it against av free. rotation. l have shown this form of holder for a practical apphca tion of my invention, but it is understood that the same; can be. readily applied to any well-known form of holders.

This rod 12 could be loosely connected to the head 9. or it could have a shoulder on the end thereof, which would drop into a socket in the head and could not be removed until the roll was used up and the core removed. Said central cut-away portion is provided with an eccentrically arranged through the outer face of the head.

The rod 12 passes into the opening 15 and the spring moves inwardly freely and allows of the free. passage of the said rod through the opening to the right. \Vhen the. rod has reached its limit of movement through the. opening any back 'ard pull upon the rod causes the. spring 17 to bite into the. rod and hold the. head against outward movement. lly this arrangement it will be. seen that the roll holder is heldso that the. arm cannot be moved outwardly and the rod 12 locks the two arms of the hohh against outward movement and absolutely prevents the roll of paper from being removed from the holder. In order to move the heads 9 and t3 ontwardly,'it is necessarv to press the spring inwardly within the. recess 13 and can only be accomplished after the roll of paper 1s entirely used up and the core 7 cut away so that the. spring can be thus operated.

.As heretofore stated, While I have shown and described this specific form of heads 9 and 13, it will be understood that they could be made perfectly Hat and which would enable the invention to be applied to any of the well-known roll holders in which two arms are employed to support the roll of paper. It will also be understood thahboth heads 9 and 13 can be constructed exactly alike so that they both move on the rod independent of each other.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut is: v ,1

The combination with a paper roll holder, comprising two laterally movable arms having-at their ends means r61 supporting 51-011, of a locking device carried" at one endgneans for engaglngvthe free end of one of said arms'and a member movable on the other end of'the rod outside of the arm and carrying a locking member engaging the said rod. 1

A locking device for roll holders, having roll supporting arms and transverse openings, the locking device comprising a rod passing through the said openings and having at one end a member engaging one arm and a member longitudinally movable on the other end of the rod, said member carrying a lock at its inner side whereby the lock is inaccessible while the roll is in position inthe holder.

A locking device for roll holders having roll supporting arms provided with transverse openings, the lockin device com prising a rod having one en operatively engaging one of the arms, thebther end of the rodipassing through the opening of the other arm; a member slidable upon the rod aafidtcarryingfiiglocking device at its inner side for locking 1t on the rod, one of said arms movable inward when the paper roll is used up to permit ready access to the locking member to release it from the rod for the placing of an unused paper roll in position on theholder arms,

ing roll supporting arms, one of which is laterally movable, of a separate locking device therefor, the locking device comprising a rod adapted to pass through the ends of the arms, one'e'iidifcit the rod constructed to operatively engage one of the arms, the other end of the rod passing through the other arm and projecting therebeyond, and a member slidable upon the projecting end of the rod to engage the outside of the arm, said member carrying a spring lock at its inner side to lock against the rod, whereby the lock is inaccessible when the paper roll is in position.

A look of the character described, comprising a head, a rod eccentrically carried by the innerface of the head, a second head having a thickened portion at one side and provided with a recess, a head having an 'opening therethrough communicating with the recess, a leaf-spring rigidly carried by the head and arranged at an angle thereto and having a flat outer edge intersecting the opening in the second head whereby the said head is free to move inwardly on the rod to hold it against movement thereon.

(3. A lock of the character described comprisinga head, a rod rigidly carried by the inner face of the head, a second head having a thickened portion provided with a recess communicating with an opening through the same, said head having a thickened portion opposite the first mentioned thickened portion, a leaf spring rigidly carried by said second thickened portion arranged at an angle to the head and intersecting the recess carried by the other thickened portion, whereby the edge of the leaf-spring engages the rod and locks the head thereon against outward movement.
