HANS LUDWIG OCHSNER, OF ALPENA, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-THIRD T0 NELSON M. EDDY, 0F ALPENA, MICHIGAN.
WOMANS WORK AND SPORT GARMENT.
Application filed October 3, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS Lonwre 0011s- NER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Alpena, in the county of Alpena and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Womens Work and Sport Garments, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to womens garments and more particularly to womens overgarments, my invention residing in a skirt or skirt portion of a dress to be worn with bloomers, my object being the provision of a skirt arrangement of such a nature that its sections may be folded readily and quickly when desired to expose the bloomers when engaged in house-work, gardening, sports and the like.
In carrying out my invention I provide a skirt or the skirt portion of a dress to be worn over bloomers, in front and rear sections, having side slits extending upwardly from the lower edge thereof, to a point adjacent to the hips, the slit portion being normally closed by connecting tabs, and the sections, which may be either integral or connected at points above the upper inner ends of the slits, being independently foldable around the hips so that the normally concealed bloomers will be exposed and free use of the limbs permitted. In this latter or folded position of the skirt the connecting tabs before mentioned perform an additional function in connecting the ends of each of the folded sections, the rear section being preferably folded first and connectedat the front, and the front section being folded and connected at the rear, means being provided whereby to close the folded front section at points adjacent the hips, so as to constitute an enlarged pocket across the front portion of the body of the wearer,
capable of utilization as a clothes pin pocket or for the retention of such other articles of like nature as may be desirable.
In its specific aspect my invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement and operation to be now described with respect to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating my improvements in their normal position with the skirt extended;
Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating the initial folding of the rear section prepara Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Inlay 7, 1918.
Serial No. 194,528.
Fig. 7 is a view partly in elevationand in section through the folded skirt;
Fig. 8 is a side View of the lower portion of the skirt in normally extended position;
Fig. 9 is a horizontal section taken therethrough, substantially on line 99 of Fig.8;
Fig. 10 is an inner face view of the rear section of the skirt;
Fig. 11 is a similar view of the front section of the skirt, and,
Fig. 12 is a side view of the lower portion of the skirt in extended position with the connecting tab released.
Referring now to these figures, my invention contemplates the provision of a womans garment, and is directed particularly to the skirt portion which my invention contemplates forming in front and rear sections 15 and 16, and which I propose to provide with vertical side slits 17 extending upwardly from the lower edge of the skirt to points somewhat below the hips.
At opposite sides of the slits 17, the front and rear sections are provided with horizontally alined buttons 18, providing for their normal connection by means of tabs 19 adapted to extend across and bridge the slits 17., the said buttons and tabs being in their normal positions located approximately midway of the length of the slits 17, as may be plainly seen by an inspection of Fig. 1.
The adjacent edges of the front and rear sections 15 and 16 are preferably connected at points between the buttons 18 and the upper inner ends of the slits 17,'by means of enlarged triangular webs 20 which are thus concealed in the normal extended position of the garment with the tabs 19 in the posi tion shown in Fig. 1, and which provide for certain conveniences in the folded position of the skirt sections as hereinafter described.
The skirtthus generally described may be either separate from the remainder or waist section 21 of the outer garments, or may be integral or connected thereto, and worn with a belt 22, or as desired, the skirt provided by my invention being, however, particularly adapted to be Worn with bloomers 23 of any suitable construction, as for instance, of the type shown in Figs. 4; to 7 inclusive, the purpose in view being the ready and quick folding of the skirt from its normal position covering and concealing the bloomers to a position where the bloom; ers will be exposed and free use of the limbs of the wearer permitted as an assistance in house-work, sports and the like.
It is obvious that with these features in mind the skirt will be formed of various materials suitable for the particular purpose for which it is worn, bearing in mind of course its adaptability to ready and quick folding, and just as quick and ready releasing to normal extended position after the purposes of it's fold'mg have been served.
In folding the garment as proposed by my invention the rear section is grasped at a point intermediate the ends of the slits 17 after the tabs 19 have been released and the grasped portion drawn upwardly so as to form a fold of which the lower portion of the rear section is outermost, as plainly seen by reference to Fig. 2, the side edges of the rear section being drawn forwardl around the hips and one of the tabs 19 being utilized to connect the buttons 18 of the rear section at the front, as clearly seen in Fig. 3. The front section 15 is similarly grasped at intermediate points and elevated to form a fold of which the lower portion of the outer section is outermost, as seen particularly in Fig. 4, and the side edges of the thus folded front section are extendedrearwardly around the hips, and the buttons 18 thereof connected at the rear by means of the other tab 19, as clearly seen by reference to Fig. 6, it being noted that the forward connected portions of the folded rear section are thereby concealed by the folded front section, as plainly to be seen from Fig. 5, and that by virtue of the connecting webs '20 before described which are positioned at the hips of the wearer, the lapping fold of the front section's forms a pocket across the front, which may be utiliz'ed for the reception and retention of clothes pins and other articles.
It is also to be observed from Figs. '5 and 6 that with the front and rear sections of the skirt folded and connected in folded positions around the hips, as described, the bloomers 23 are exposed and the limbs of the wearer may be freely used as desirable in house work, gardening, sports and the like-the sk'irt being releasable to extended position by simply disconnecting the tabs 19 of first the folded front section, and then the folded rear section, and then reconnecting the tabs with the skirt sections in ex-, tended position, as seen in Fig. 1.
From Figs. 10 and 11 it will be noted that for strength the front and rear sections of the garment have their lower and side edges below the buttons 19'hemmed, as seen at 24, and are provided with stitched transversely extending reinforced tapes 25, which reinforce the intermediate portions of the front and rear section's and serve at their ends to firmly support the buttons 18, the front section 15 having its reinforcing tape 25 preferably provided with a centrally located water proof apron 26 detachably connected thereto by glove or other fasteners 27, which apron will be entirely concealed when the garment is in either the extended or the folded position.
I claim V 1. A garment of the character described including a skirt having side slits extending upwardly from its lower edge and forming front and rearsections, provided with fastening members at Opposite sides of the said slits intermediate the ends of the latter, the front and rear sections being independently foldable upwardly and extendible around the upper portion of the skirt in overlapping relation, and tabs having means to engage the said fastening members and arranged and adapted to normally bridge the slits and connect the front and rear sections and to connect the adjacent portions of each of the sections in their folded positions.
A garment of the character described, including a skirt portion having vertically extending side slits forming front and rear sections, the lower portions of which are independentof one another, said sections;
being independently foldable in a vertical direction and arranged to extend substantially around the upper portion of the skirt in their folded position with one folded section overlapping the other folded section, and means for connecting the lower portions of the front and rear sections in their extended position, said means being adapted to connect the adjacent portions of each of the sections in their folded positions.
3, A garment of the character described, including a skirt portion having vertically extending side slits forming front and rear sections, the sections having on their inner faces 'a distance from their lower ends transverse tapes, saidsections being independently foldable in a vertical direction and arranged to extend substantially around the upper portion of the skirt in their folded position with one folded sect-ion overlapping the other folded section, and means for connecting the lower portions "of the front and rear sections in their extended position, Y said means being adapted to connect the adjacent portions of each of the sections in their folded positions, and including buttons carried by the skirt sections, and tabs having means to engage said buttons in both the extended and folded positions.
4:. A garment of the character described including a skirt having side slits extending upwardly from the lower edges thereof and formin front and rear sections provided at then adjacent side edges with fastening means intermediate the ends of the slits and at the ends of the slits with triangular webs, each of said sections being foldable in a vertical direction with its lower portion outermost and being extendible around the upper portion of the skirt in overlapping relation with the side edges of each of the sections adjacent to one another, the said fastening means servin to connect the sections in both the extende and folded positions, whereby the lapping fold of the front section forms a pocket at the front of the garment.
