COMBINED COAL AND GAS RANGE.
messes.
Application filed August 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern: g
, Be it known that I, RANSOMI W. DAVEN- ron'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Coal and Gas Ranges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to stoves of that type designed for use with either solid or gaseous fuel, and the invention comprises the novel construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the combined range;
Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof on line :rm,- and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section.
A is a cooking range of any suitable construction and provided with the usual firebox B, oven 0, top flue 1), down flue E, bottom flue F and rear flue G. H is the grate at the bottom of the fire-box, and beneath this is an ash-pit I, all of the parts being of usual construction.
It is the primary object of the invention to equip a solid fuel range, such as above described, with a gas heater so arranged as to avoidany interference with the transmission of heat from the fines or the normal operation of the stove with coal. Inasmuch as the fines extend across the top and bottom, one end and in rear, and as the fire-box is arranged at the other end, the oven is almost completely surrounded. There is, however, a fiueless wall which is intermediate the ashpit and one side of the oven, and I have therefore located the gas burners at this point. As shown J is the delivery end portion of the gas burner which extends upward through the bottom of the range between the ash-pit and the oven, and discharges through an aperture in the oven wall laterally over the oven bottom. The portion J of the burner is connected with a laterallyextending portion K, which is arranged within the base ring L, extending through the end of the stove where it is provided with a gas valve M and the usual air-mixer O. P is a deflector or false bottom, which is arranged above the burner and is removable when the range is used with solid fuel. Q is a damper for closing the aperture with Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 47AM.
which the burner registers, and R is another damper for closing and opening an exit opening S near the top of the oven. The dampers, Q and R are preferably connected with a common actuating mechanism, such as T, arranged outside of the stove, and by means of which said dampers may be simultaneously opened or closed.
lVith the construction as described, when the range is used with solid fuel, the dampers Q and R are closed and the deflector or false bottom P is removed. The products of combustion of the fuel in the fire-box will then pass around through the fines D E F G without interference from any part of the gas heating apparatus, and furthermore the arrangement of the gas burner J does not interfere with the efliciency of the stove in any way, for the reason that it is adjacent to a portion of the oven wall which is flueless. To use the range with gaseous fuel, all that is necessary is to open the dampers and R by the common actuating mechanism'T and place the deflector or false bottom P in position. Then thus adjusted the flame from the burner will pass over the bottom of the oven beneath the false bottom, and the heated gases of combustion will pass upward through the oven and out through the escape flue S.
As specifically shown, the oven is provided with a pocket U in its rear wall in which the exit opening S and damper R are located. The damper R has a rotary actuating stem It which passes to the end of the range, and is provided with a crank R connected to a pull-rod R This pull-rod has a handle portion It for operating the same, and which also performs the function of a stop for preventing the turning of the handle IV of the valve M when the dampers are closed. The rod R within the oven has a crank arm R connected by a rod R and chain or other flexible connection R with the damper Q, the arrangement being such that the actuation of the handle R will simultaneously open or close both dampers R and Q.
Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a cook stove, the combination with an oven, of an ash-pit and superposed firebox at one side thereof and fines extending from said fire-box over the top, down at one side beneath the bottom and to the rear of said oven, a gas burner having a portion srovn WORKS,

arranged between said ash-pit and oven and discharging laterally through an aperture in the oven wall into the lower portion thereof, a removable deflector or false bottom arranged above the level of discharge of said burner, and co-acting dampers for respectively controlling said aperture and a discharge opening from the top of the oven and a common means actuating said dampers.
2. In a cook stove, the combination with an oven, a fire-box and lines for the products of combustion extending from said firebox around said oven, of a gas burner arranged adjacent to a flueless portion of the oven wall and directed into said oven, dampers controlling the opening into said oven for said burner and an exit opening, a common actuating connection for said dampers by which both may be simultaneously opened or closed, a valve for the gas burner, and a stop on said actuating mechanism for preventing the opening of said valve when said dampers are closed.
3. In a cook stove, the combination with an oven, a fire-box and flues for the products of combustion extending from said fire-box around said oven, of a gas burner arranged to discharge into the oven adjacent the bottom thereof, a discharge flue in communication with said flues rising adjacent the oven at the rear thereof, and offset rearwardly to form a recess in the oven rear wall, an outlet being formed in said recess from the Copies of this patent may be obtained for oven to said flue, a damper controlling said outlet arranged in said recess] 4. In a cook stove, the combination with an oven, a fire-box and flues for the products of combustion extending from said fire-box around the oven, a gas burner adapted to discharge into the oven, dampers respectively controlling the opening into said oven for said burner and an exit opening therefrom, a common actuating connection for said dampers by which both may be simultaneously opened or closed, a valve for-the gas burner, and a stop on said actuating mechanism for preventing the opening of said valve when said dampers are closed.
5. In a cook stove, the combination with an oven, of a fire-box and fines for the products of combustion extending from said firebox around said oven, means for heating said oven by the introduction of hot gases thereinto, a discharge flue rising adjacent the oven at the rear thereof and offset rearwardly to form a recess in the oven, an outlet being formed in said recess from said oven tothe flue, and a damper controlling said outlet arranged in said recess.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
