Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED J. Sass, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to certain new and useful improvements in stoves or ranges, and particularly to that type of such stoves or ranges wherein either solid fuel or gas may be burned, as desired.
The invention herein shown and described is an improvement upon the stove or range disclosed in the application for Letters Patent filed by Lee R. Motherwell, on the 22nd day of September, 1916, bearing Serial Number 121,510, owned and controlled by the assignee of this present application, and such features of construction as may be herein shown and described which are counterpart to similar features of construction in" the Motherwell application, are disclaimed, except to such which applicant may, because of prior uses, be entitled to use. 1
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a valve, approximately centrally located in the bottom of the oven, beneath the perforated supplemental bottom and to control it by the same operating means, which also controls the flow of gas to the gas burners. Locating the valve 111 the bottom of the oven insures a more even distribution of the heat from the gas burners through the oven proper, resulting in a more uniform baking of the articles in the oven.
A further object of the invention is to provide a valve, approximately centrally disposed in the bottom of the oven, for the exit of the heat from the gas burners; to provide a valve in the oven door, through which air may be admitted to be fed to the gas burners, to insure a proper mixture of the gas and air; a valve controlling the supply of gas to the gas burners, and a common actuating means in operative connection with the valve in the oven bottom and also the gas supply valve for opening and closing the same simultaneously.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain means embodying my invention, the disclosed means, however, constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be applied.

I have shown the stove or range supported on the usual legs 1, and having the fire-box 2, the ashpit 3 therebeneath, the oven 4 and fine 5 for the escape of the products of combustion to the chimney with which said flue 5 may be connected. Communicating with the fire-box 2 is a flue or chamber 6 which overlies the oven 4:, and said flue or chamber 6 communicates with a flue or chamber 7 on the far side of the oven, and this flue or chamber 7 communicates with a flue or chamber 8 underlying the oven 4, and oven bottom 9. The last mentioned flue or chamber may communicate with. the flue 5, in any suitable manner.
The description thus far has to do with the construction of the stove or range when coal or other solid fuel is used to heat the oven 4. The lines or chambers 6, 7 and 8 present a heating surface which insures the uniform heating of the oven wall, and is substantially that construction to be found in stoves or ranges in general use, except that the bottom wall 9 of the oven has been lowered so as to bring the surface of the supplemental oven bottom 11 on the same plane with the surface of the oven. door 12 when it is in an open position.

The extensions 24 of the burner represent the active portions of the burner, and are provided with openings 25 in their upper walls, from which a gas-flame may issue in a vertical direction in the flues or chambers 15, and 26 are openings similar to the openings 25 and are for the same purpose, except the openings 26 are disposed diagonally in the burner, preferably in the lower portions thereof, so that the gas flame will issue in the direction of the flue or chamber 16 beneath the supplemental oven bottom 11. Leading into the rear of thestove or range and connected to the main burner pipe 22, is a supply pipe 27, leading to a suitable source of supply, and set in said pipe 27, at a suitable point is 'a valve 28, controlling the flow: of gas through said pipe to the burner 22.
'To provide for the proper mixture of oxygen and gas, in the oven, I provide for the'admission of air into the flues or chambers 15, through openings 29 in the rear wall of the oven, and also for the admission of air through openings 30 in the oven door 12, controlled by a slide valve 31. The air admitted through the openings 30 will find its way into the front of the flues or chambers 15, through openings 32 in the front wall of the oven. 7
Approximately centrally disposed in the bottom 9 of the oven, 1 provide a valve 33, preferably of an oscillating type, controlling openings in said bottom 9. This valve has connected thereto, a crank 34 to which is connected. a reciprocal connecting rod 35 which passes out through'one of the side walls 01'? the stove or range, and to its outer end is connected a casting havinga V-shaped recess or seat 36. Seated in this recess or seat is the lower end of acrank-arm 37' con nected to and depending'from a rocking rod 38, its inner end operatively connected to the valve 28 in the gas supply pipe 27, and on its outer end having a finger holev 39, by means of which the rod 38 is operated. Turning said rod 38 in one direction, will open the valve 28 to admit gas to the burner 22, and will also oscillate the valve 33 to permit the heat in the oven to pass out into the flue 8 and thence into the flue 5. The supplemental bottom 11 is provided with a multiplicity of openings 40 to permit mass the heat, generated by the burners 25 and 26, to pass from the oven proper, into flue 16 and thence through the openings con trolled by the valve 33;
It is obvious from the foregoing descrip tion, that solid fuel or gas may be used to heat the oven, and used independently of each other, or at the same time, as may be desired. As we are not concerned particularly in the travel of the products of combustion from the solid fuel in the fire-box 2 into the flue 5, reference need only be briefly made to the travel of the products of combustion from the burner 22, when gas is used, through the oven into the flue 5.
The rod 38 is operated to'release the gas to the burner 22, and at the same time, the valve 33 is opened through which the products of combustion will escape into the flue 5, and the opening of which will provide the necessary draft to draw the products of combustion from the oven. Upon turning on the gas, a lighted match inserted into the openings 32 will cause the gas escaping through the openings 25 and 26 in the pipe sections 24 of the burner to become ignited,
a proper combustion taking place, by the;
admission of the required amount of air taken through the openings 29 inthe rear wall of the stove or range and also through the openings 30 in the oven door. The products of combustion from the flame at the openings 26 in the burner will pass into the flue or chamber 16 beneath the supplementaloven bottom 11, circle around in the oven 4 and thence down through other of the openings 40 and out through the valve 33 into the flue or chamber 8, and out through the flue 5. The products of combustion from the flame at the openings 25 in the upper wall of the burner sections 24 will rise in the flues or chambers 15 and out through the openings 21 in the lining 14, and into the oven proper, commingling with the products of combustion from the flame at the openings 25 in the burner sections and passing from the oven 4 in the manner just previously explained.
What I claim is 1. In a stove or range, an oven having a supplemental bottom spaced from the main bottom and provided with a plurality of perforations, gas burners on either side oi said oven, a gas supply pipe connected with said burners and provided with a controlling valve, a valve in the main bottom of the oven, an operating means, operating con-. nections between said operating means and said controlling valve in the supply pipe, and between said operating means and said valve in the oven bottom;

In a stove or range, an ovenhaving a supplemental bottom spaced from the main bottom and provided with a plurality of perforations, gas burners on either sideof 1" said oven, air inlet openings in a rear wall of the stove, and also in the oven door, a valve controlling said last mentioned openings, a gas supply pipe connected with said burners and provided with a controlling valve, a valve in the main bottom of the oven, an operating means, operating connections between said operating means and said controlling valve in the supply pipe, and between said operating means and said valve in the oven bottom.
3. In a stove or range, an oven having a supplemental bottom spaced from the main bottom and provided with a plurality of perforations, gas burners on either side of said oven, a gas and supply pipe connected With said burners and provided with a controlling valve, an oscillatory valve in the,
main bottom of the oven, a crank connected with said oscillatory valve, a reciprocal rod 20 and connections between said operators rod 25 and said reciprocal rod.
