COMB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1918.
Application filed August 13, 1917. Serial No. 185,861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LOUIS MYERS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to hair combs and comprises the novel construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the comb;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a cross section.
It is usual in the construction of hair combs to have the teeth thereof substantially rectangular in cross section, while the interdental spaces taper from their outer to their inner ends. Furthermore the back or handle of the comb is usually of the same thickness as the teeth and presents an angular edge at the inner end of the interdental spaces. As a consequence in use there is a tendency for the hair to wedge in between the teeth, and this, together with the angular cross section of the teeth, often causes pulling. It is the object of the present invention to avoid these objections, which I have accomplished, first, by forming the teeth of rounded cross-section; second, by
placing enlargements in the teeth near the outer ends thereof which form restricted entrance orifices to the interdental spaces and consequently prevent wedging of the hair; third, by a construction of back or handle which presents a rounded surface for the hair to pull over; and fourth by various specific features as hereinafter set forth.
In detail, A is the back or handle memher, which is of a thickness in excess of the diameter of the teeth and is formed with a rounded surface B adjacent to the teeth. C are the teeth, which are preferably circular in cross-section and are embedded in the back A. or otherwise securely attached thereto. Near the forward ends of these teeth are enlargements D, preferably spherical in form, and beyond the enlargements are short extensions E of the same cross-section as on the opposite side of the enlargements and terminating in rounded ends. The back, A, is preferably provided with a handle portion F at one end thereof, which may be suitably fashioned.
With a comb constructed as described in use, when the teeth are inserted in the hair the quantity admitted to each interdental space is limited by the restriction of the spherical enlargements D, so that whatever passes beyond these enlargements will be provided with clearance. On account of the rounded cross-section the movement of the comb in any direction will draw the hair over a rounded surface, and therefore pulling is avoided. Furthermore the handle extending at one end of the comb forms a convenient means of manipulating the same.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A hair comb, comprising a back or shank, a series of teeth extending laterally therefrom, and spherical enlargements adjacent to the outer ends of said teeth for limiting the entrance to the interdental spaces.
2. In a hair comb, the combination with a back or shank of a series of teeth extending laterally therefrom, of uniform rounded cross section throughout their lengths and each being provided with an enlargement adjacent to its outer end for limiting the entrance to the interdental spaces.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
LOUIS MYERS.
