To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARLIE A. TOWNSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Hampton, in the county of Chickasaw and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package- Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to.

Fig. 4 represents a fragmental perspective View of the tie, illustrating the manner of connecting the ends of the annular member in detail, and
Fig. 5 represents a fragmental plan view of the package tie, illustrating the manner of adjustably fastening the chain.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 6 indicates a flexible package tie or chain constructed of a plurality of links. The link at one end of the chain'6 is connected with an annular member 7, preferably constructed of wire of adequate gage to lend requisite strength and rigidity thereto. One end of the annular member 7 is flattened, as indicated at 8, and formed with an aperture 9 receiving the reduced and angularly directed opposite end 10. The relatively wide flat end 8 of the annular member is prevented from accidental removal from the reduced angular end 10 by a head 11 secured to or formed integral with the reduced end 10 and disposed substantially parallel to the adjacent portion of the annular member 7.
As clearly illustrated in Fig. 5, the links of the chain 6 are of elongated formation and are of such size as to receive the head 11 and permit any one of the links to be slipped over the head 11 and the reduced angular end 10 of the annular member 7 In use, the annular member 7 is placed Patented May 7, 1918.

the head 11 preventing the accidental disengagement of the link from the angular end 10. As clearly illustrated in Fig. 3, the free or outer end of the angular extremity 10 is inclined inwardly; toward the center of the annular member 7 and thus the longitudinal pull upon the chain causes the link engaged with the angular end 10 to'slip inwardly toward the inner end of the angular extremity l0 and against the relatively wide flat end 8 of the annular member 7. If preferred, the
chain may be subsequently looped about the package at right angles to the first loops placed thereon and one of the links adjacent the free end of the chain may be slipped over the head lland angular extremity 10 so as to secure the last mentioned loops of the chain in position about the package 12.
What I claim is:
1. A package tie comprising an annular member, a chain slidably connected with the annular member, an angular directed arm carried by the upper surface of said annular member, 1a head connected with the upper end of said arm, said chain including a plurality of links adapted to engage the angular end of angularly disposed arm, said arm being bent inwardly toward the center of said annular member to provide an inclined surface to engage the said links.
