TIE' FOR BALES,BUNDLES, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming par or Letters patent No. eosneau'atea June 7, 189s. Application led August 24, 189'?, Serial lNo. 649,299. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern.-
Freeport, county of Stephenson, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tiesfor Bales, Bundles, dac., of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a tie for bales or bundles which will be simple'Y in construction, inexpensive, and effective in operation. l i
With these ends in view my improved tie comprises a clamping-head, to which one endof the band or rope which encircles the bun-t dle is secured, and y,which clamping-head is preferably formedy from a single piece of wire or rod bent on itself to form a body portion, an adjacent spring-ton gue extending parallel, or substantially so, to the body portion, and
a hook or shoulder, the free end of the rope being adapted to be passed around the tongue and body portion and finally between the same and there held by the spring-tongue.
The invention also consists in Vthe details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a plan View of my improved tie as it appears in use applied to a bundle. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the'clamping-head detached fromk the band. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views showing the different steps in the operation of tying in using my device.
In the accompanying drawings the clamping-head is formed, preferably, from a single piece of wire or rod bent so as to form an eye l, to which one end of an encircling rope Zips adapted to be attached, a body portion 3, a shoulder 4, extending at an inclination to' the body and forming Y a hook, as at 4X, and a spring tongue or finger 5, which latter extends adjacent to the body portion, as shown. The shoulder is formed by bending the wire laterally of the body portion, as at 4, then dle, then beneath the shoulder 4, and in the Be It known that I, ANTHONY NIcHLEss, ofi
hook 4X, and by drawing on the rope, as illustrated in Fig. 3, it may be tightened around the bundle to the degree desired. Owing to the inclination of the shoulder at 4 there will be no liability of the cord slipping from the hook,- which latter will be held down against the bundle by reason of the strain on the eye 1,'5'Which is located to one side of the longitudinalaxis of the bodyportion 3. When the band has been drawn tight enough, it is passed, while still under tension, beneath and around the projecting portion 7, jas shown in Fig. 4, and by pulling on the end in the direction ofthe arrow in Fig. 4 the inclined surface 6 of the shoulder will cause the loop to slip beneath the shoulder 4, after which the free end is drawn in between the springtongue and body portion, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, where it is securely held. Under this arrangement there is no possibility of the secured end of the band detaching or becoming loose by reason of any shrinking in the bundle, theton'gue' at all times and under all conditions encountered in use holding the end of the band securely. i
Inorder to unite the band, it is simply necessary to draw the conine'd end of the same `from between the tongue and `,body portion and slip it beneath the shoulder, the opera- Ations both of tying and untying being thus accomplished with rapidity and little trouble.
I claim- Y 'Y l. A tie for bales, &c., comprising a body portion having at one end a shoulder and having on the side opposite the shoulder a springtongue,- said tongue extending adjacent to thebody portion parallel or substantially so to the same; whereby a cord or band may be passed around the body portion and tongue and against the shoulder; and have its end firmly secured between the tongue and body portion.
2. A tie for bales, dre., formed from a single piece of wire bent to form a body portion 3, an inclined shoulder 4 at one end, and a spring-tongue 5 extending "adjacent to the body portion toward its opposite'end parallel or substantially so to 'the same.
3. A tiefor bales, i&c.; formed from 'a single piece of wire bent to forma bodyh portion 3, an eye 1 at one end arranged to one side IOO of the longitudinal axis of the body portion7 a shoulder at the opposite end of the body portion extending in the same direction as the eye, and a spring-tongue on the side of the body portion opposite the eye, said tongue extending froni the shoulder parallel or substantially so to the body portion.
4. A tie for bales, d50., consisting of a single piece of wire bent to form an eye l, and extending straight to form a body portion 3, then laterally at an acute angle, as at 4 to form a hook 4X, then returning on itself and extending toward the body portion at an inelination as at 6, then parallel or snbstantially so to the body portion as at 5 in the form of a spring-tongue.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set Iny hand, this 19th day of August, 1S97, in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
ANTHONY NICHLESS.
