ROBERT J. CREIGrI-I'Tdlf, 0F CARNDUFF, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA.
` PACKAGE-TIE.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, ROBERT J. CREIGHTON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Carnduff, in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new` and useful Improvements in Packagef'lies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enablel others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to package ties, and c the primary object of the invention is to provide a package tie which is simple in construction,4 durable and by means of which a tying medium such as a cord may be quickly fastened for holding a number of articles in a compact package and one in which the tying element may be easily and quickly disconnected from the tie without mutilation of the tying element.
More specifically, the object of the invention is to provide a package tie comprising a pair of gripping arms having an eye formed thereon and communicating with the gripping space between the arms so that the `cord may be passed into the eye by a pull in Ithe same direction as it is moved int-o gripped position and further to provide a resilient linger which is carried by one of the arms and engages the other, spanning the gripping space between the arms and forming a temporary check for the cord or tying medium to prevent the same from being accidentally pulled into the releasing eye. With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying `drawings wherein like characters designate Specication of Letters Patent.
` `Appli@"cion med september 22,1915. serial no. 52,125.. n y y ings, 1 and 2 indicate Vthe gripping arms of the package tie, which tie is preferably formed of a single strand of wire bent to form the gripping arms 1 and 2, and the releasing eye 3, which communicates with the gripping space 4lC between the arms 1 and 2. A tying cord or other suitable tying medium 5 is attached to the free end of the gripping arm 2, bymeans of an eye 6 which is formed upon the free end of the gripping arm, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
ln applying the improved package tie to a package of articles for holding the articles in a compact package, the package tie is placed, upon one side of the package, and the tying cord 5 is passed about the package, and its free end is passed between the gripping arms l and 2, into the gripping space 4f, where it is frictionally gripped and securely held in place. A resilient nger 7 is attached to the gripping arm 2 and spans the space 4,
having its free end resting upon the arm 1Q The resilient finger 7 is positioned in close proximity to the mouth of the releasing eye 3, and .it is provided fortemporarily checking the passageof the free end of the tying cord 5 between the arms l and 2 for preventing the end of cord from being accidentally slipped into the releasing eye and consequently disconnected from the package tie.
The resiliency of the finger 7 will allow the free end of the cord to be passed beneath the same, and pulled into the eye 3, by a pull in the same direction in which it is pulled between the arms 1 and 2. When the free end of the cord 5 is pulled into the eye 3, the frictional grip of the arms 1 and 2 will be released from the tying cord and the same may be easily removed from about the pack age.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, a modified form of the package tie is illustrated. The modified form generically indicated by the numeral 10 comprises sections 11 and 12, each of which are identical in construction with the package tie illustrated in Fig. 1, with the exception of the fact that the arms 2 thereofl are connected, in lieu of having the eye 6 formed thereon. The section 11 of the package tie l0 is disposed at right angles to the section 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings and the connected ends of the arms 2 have an angled plate 13 attached thereto. The angled plate 13 is provided with a pair of openings 14 through which the tying cord v5 extends.v v
In attaching the modiiied Vform of the package tie to a number of small articles for pull in the same direction will niove the cord V into said releasing eye.
2.` In a package tie, a tying cord, a pair of gripping arms, a releasing eye communicating with the gripping space between said tying them securely in a package, one end-arms and arranged whereby a pull upon the of the tying, cord is inserted between the gripping-arms of either section 11 or 12 of the package tie and the cord is then passed about the package in one direction, and downwardly through one of the openings 14 and upwardly through the otherl and passed about the passage transversely to the direction in which it was originally passed about the package. The free end of the cord is then inserted between the gripping arms of the other section of the modified form of the package tie, and the cord is securely held about the package by the frictional grip of the arms of each of the sections upon the ends of the cord.
In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alteration to which the patentee is entitled, provided such alterations are comprehended withinthe scope of what is claimed.
Whatl is claimed is 1. Ina package tie, a tying cord, a pair of cord gripping arms, a, releasing eye communicating with the gripping space between said arms and arranged whereby a pull upon the tying cord `will move it into a gripped .position between said arms and a further tying cord will move it into a gripped position between said arms and a further pull in the lsame direction will move it into said releasing eye, and a resilient linger carried by one of said arms and forming a temporary check for the movement of said cord into said eye.
3. In a package tie, a tying cord, a pair of gripping arms, a releasing eye communicating with the gripping space between said arms and arranged whereby a pull upon the tying cord will move it into a gripped position between said arms and a further pull in the same direction move it into said releasing eye, a resilient iinger attached to one of said arms and spanning the gripping space between the arms having its free end lying upon the gripping arm from which it is free from connection, said resilient linger forming a temporary check for the movement of G0 said cord into said eye.
In testimony whereoit I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
