IMPROVEMEN T IN CAR-SEATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,485, dated May 7, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, \VILLIAM G. PHIL- IPS and NrcnoLAs COLEMAN, of Newport, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Oar-Seats; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. a

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a bottom view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the same.

This invention has relation to car-seats and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, consisting of a vertical pivot and connections, which enable the seat to be reversed by turning it around on said pivot, and held firmly in position when properly adjusted, substantially as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents a U-shaped horizontal frame, supported upon standards B. U designates a reversible carseat, from the bottom of which depends a shaft or pivot, c. The lower end of said pivot is threaded to receive a thumb-nut d. Immediately above the threaded sectiona of said pivot is out square or shouldered, as shown, to receive and hold a bar, 01 having a square aperture cut through its center. The pivot c is rigidly secured to the bottom of the seat. The npper section thereof is rounded, and passes through a transverse bar, E, attached to the frame A, and also through the center of a flanged disk, F, secured to the under side of said bar. The flange g to said disk is of a cylindrical form. The edge thereof is curved,

so that the greater depth of flange will be toward the side of the frame A. From these points the edge of the flange becomes concave on either side, as shown in the drawing. \Vhen the seat is turned the bar 01 turns with it, said bar becoming loose enough to allow the seat a free motion. As the seat approaches a proper position the bar d is tightened against the edge of the flange g, which is in the nature of a wedge, and in this way holds the seat firmly. The thumb-nut d is used for the purpose of regulating the tension of the bar d. 01- represents a washer. G represents a block of India rubber designed to hold the seat in a firmer position, and to prevent the rattling consequent upon the mot-ion of the car. H is a hook, which is attached to the bottom of the seat, and catches in plates h h secured to the frame A, so as to act as a stop to the movement of the seat. I designates a lock arranged in the end of the frame A. The bolt enters one of the recessed plates 2' and locks the seat.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The pivot 0, disk F having the circular wedge-shaped flange g, bar 01 and thumbnut d or its equivalent, in combination with the car-seat O, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
