Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented' Apr. 30P, 191%.
Application led November 20, 1916. Serial No. 132,368.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. KLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers for Paper Cups, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to improvements in containers for paper cups of the sanitary kind now in common use at soft drink dispensaries, and more particularly to that kind of cups which are formed conical or Haring in shape so that they may be telescoped and arranged in stacks in 'the container ready to be withdrawn therefrom one by one as needed.
The object of the invention is to devise a container which will permit the withdrawal of the cups one at a time in an easy and ready manner, and also to provide a container which will be simple in construction, economical in manufacture and effec tive in use.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical section of a container with its cap removed and a stack of paper cups shown therein.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation. l
Referring tothe drawings, l reperesents a casing formed of sheet metal of cylindri-v cal shape open at the top and bottom but designed tol have its top closed by a cap 2 when not in use. The lower end of the casing has an exterior reinforcing ring 3 which may be pressed thereon against the bead 4. Located on the interior wall of the casing 1 is a series of vertically extending beads or ribs 5, four of which are shown in the drawings and which may be formed of wires, the extreme upper ends of which are preferably soldered to the interior of the casing as at 5a, and the extreme lower ends of which are bent outwardly and then upwardly, as indicated at 5b, with the upwardly projecting portionsv extending into apertures in the lower edge of the ring 3; these portions 5b not only serving to retain the ring 3 in position but also acting as supporting feet for the container so as to raise the lower open end of the container slightly above its support 6 to allow for the escape of air when the cups are inserted therein and also permit the entrance of air thereto so as to prevent pressure of air upon the upper sides of the stack.
It has been found that when stacks of paper cups are inserted in containers with smooth interiors, the outer edg-es or rims of the cups will impinge the interior of the container to such an extent as to provide an air tight joint which materially interferes with the withdrawal of the cups from the container by producing a vacuum between the cups. By providing the ribs or beads, however, it will be seen that the stack of cups will be crimped in at the point where they contact the beads and therefore provide air passageways not only between the rims of the cups and interior of the container but also allow the air to enter between the cups themselves to a material extent, thereby permitting an equal pressure of air on each side of the uppermost cup which will allow it to be readily withdrawn when needed.
in removing the cups from the container, i
there is sometimes employed a holder which is inserted over the uppermost cup of the stack and given a twisting action in order to cause the apex end of the cup to become engaged therewith, such a holder is described in an application filed by me Nov. 20th, 1916, Ser. No. 132,366. When such a holder is employed, the vertically extending ribs will prevent the stack of cups from turning within the container and thus pro vide for the holder to be more readily engaged with the cup.
Having thus described my invention, l claim 1. ln a container for paper cups, a cylindrical casing with the interior of which the cups have a close iit, the lower end of said casing being open to the atmosphere, a series of vertically extending ribs on the interior of said casing, said ribs being extended below the lower end thereof to form feet.
2. In a container for paper cups, a cylindrical casing with the interior of which the cups have a close fit, the lower end of said casing being open to the atmosphere, a se-` ries of vertically extending ribs on the in- In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set teror of said Casing, a ring about the eXtemy hand this 14th day of November 1916. rior of the lower end of said Casing, Said T ribs being extended below the lower end of JOHN R" KLB' said easing to form feet, with the extreme Witnesses:
