PIERRE LECLOUX, OF DIJON, FRANCE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOLTS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,404, dated May 7, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, PIERRE LECLoUx, of Dijon, in the department of the Cte dOr, in the French Bepublic, locksmith, have invented an Improved Double-Balanced Bolt or Fastening for Windows, Shutters, Folding-Doors, and other like purposes, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
of the chain. Secondly, of two rods placed' at opposite extremities of the chain and acting as bolts.
This system is applicable to the fastening of folding-doors, windows, jalousies, shutters, and other like purposes.
Description of Accompanying Drawing.
Figures 1 to 6 are front views of apparatus embodying my invention.
A indicates the chain; B,upper bolt; B', lower bolt; C, levers and buttons for actuating lower bolt; D, pivoting-lever connecting two apparatuses to be actuated by lever C or knob E; f, plate for fixing chain to foldingdoor, window, or other object; g, guides for bolts B and B'.
General Description.
Fig. 1 shows the chain A closed, and bolts B B drawn to open door or window. Lowering the lever C moves the bolt B downward, extending the chain A, as at Fig. 2, and pushing the bolt B upward, so that the door or window is at once fastened top and bottom; by reversing the movement the bolts are at once withdrawn. A pin or lever, C, Fig. 3, works in a slotted piece attached to a spring and carried by the bolt B', the effect being that the spring draws down bolt B directly the handle C is moved from the perpendicular. Fig. 4 shows a double apparatus, worked by knob E or lever C. The pivoting-levers D, connected with one lower and one upper bolt,
so that, on pulling down the lever C the lever D pushes up the top bolt, with which itis connected; or, by pulling down the knob E, the lever D will lower the bottom bolt, to which it is fastened. The arrangement shown, Fig. 5, is opened and closed by pulling the rod B up and down by means of the knob C; and that, Fig. 6, by turning the handle C to the left for fastening, and to the right for unfastening the two bolts.
The number of links is not limited and will vary according to circumstances. They may be made of any suitable metal or material. The rivets uniting the links may have projecting heads, or be countersunk in the link, as may be preferred. The length of the four half-links placed at the end of the chain may vary.
It should be observed that the two rods or bolts fixed to the end of the chain should be of the same weight, so as to balance each other when the arrangement is placed perpendicularly. By making the lower rod longer than the upper one it will act as a spring.
The apparatus is actuated, as shown, either by a knob or a handle or lever placed on one of the rods or bolts. It may also be actuated by the aid of a lock and key. In this case the movement will be very easy, the rods balancin g each other.
This system will be very useful as drawbolt for a falling-latch for Venetian shutters, It will advantageously replace the Espagnolette, which is very expensive and twice as thick as my apparatus; and by the aid of a cap my apparatus may be fixed on edge upon any narrow part and act as well as if placed flat. The saving of expense, as compared with the Espagnolette, will be found very great.
This fastening will not be liable to the defects of all ordinary bolt-fastenings when allowed to get rusty, namely, overshooting-this defect being avoided by equipoise of the movement.
Claims. l claim as my invention- The double toggle-lever andlazy-ton gs, when the central link is centrally pivoted and used for operating a double bolt, as shown.
PIERRE LECLOUX. XVitnesses:
