Description

W. E. BEECK.
SCRIBER GAGE- APPLICATION FILED MAR. 16, 1911.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
INVENTOR ,lfiEficcokl ATTORNEY UMTED @TATES FATENT @FFTQE.
WILLIAM E. BEECK, OF WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCRIBER-GAGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. Bnncn, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at \Vilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scriber-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a scriber gage and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character whereby a circular line may be scribed concentrically of a circular surface.
An object of the invention is to so construct the device that contact may be accomplished between one element of the device and the circular surface while at the same time preventing excess friction between the gage and contacting surface.
Besides the above my invention is distinguished in the manner of bringing the rollers to one side of the rod so that the former may be properly associated with the surface.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein I Figure 1 is a plan view of the gage.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the bracket.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the rollers.
Fig. & is a view of the rod.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the sleeve.
Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view illustrating one application of my invention.
Again referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a rod which may have inscribed therein scale marks. One end has secured thereto a scriber 2 by means of the screw 3, mounted in one end of the rod.
The numeral 4 designates a bracket having a bore 5 in which is mounted a split sleeve 6. This sleeve 6 receives the rod,and against Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. Mar-oh 16, 1917. Serial No. 155,346.
this sleeve acts a thumb screw 7 threaded into the support by means of which the bracket may be adjusted on the rod and rigidly held in an adjusted position.
This bracket is constructed to have its major portion disposed to one side of the center of the rod as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and this major portion has journaled therein rollers 8. These rollers are provided to run upon the circular surface as shown in Fig. 6 so as to minimize friction.
It is of course to be understood that any other form of anti-friction may be used instead of the rollers 8, the sole purpose of which being to reduce frictional engagement between the bracket and a surface.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it should be apparent that I provide a de- Vice which is simple in construction and may be manufactured and sold at a relatively low cost, and capable of insuring the scribing of a circular line concentrically of a circular surface.
A very important feature of my device is that the construction and association of the parts allows the instrument to be used upon the exterior and interior surface of a pipe for the purpose of scribing a line for positioning the centers of the bolt holes in the flanges of a pipe.
Having described my invention what I claim is A device of the class described comprising a rod a scriber secured to one end thereof, a bracket having a hole in its middle portion, rollers on the bracket on each side of the center thereof, a split sleeve located in said hole and adapted to receive the rod, and a thumb screw carried by the bracket and adapted to clamp the sleeve to the rod.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM E. BEEOK.
