IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,176, dated April 30, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS XAVIER BREN- NER, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and usefullmprovements in Fastenersfor Shutters, &c.; andI do hereby declare thefollowin g to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the sagpe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, and in which Figures 1 and 2 are views of the inside of shutters, respectively, closed and open, having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the fastener. Fig. 4 is a top view of one portion thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures:
This invention relates to a fastener for shutters, &c.; and consists of a hooked bar or bolt having a swiveled joint and catch, in connection with. a flanged plate having openings, up-
' right flanges, and spaces, whereby the shutter may be readily locked or bowed, as will be set I forth.
Referring to the drawing, A B represent plates to be secured, respectively, to the two parts of a pair of shutters, doors, gates, or similar structures, or to one part thereof, and the framework therefor; but the invention will be described as applied to shutters. To
. the plate A there are secured or formed at opposite sides, hooks or catches (J D, which project at right angles with the plate, and to said plate there is jointed an eye, E, to which is jointed at E, a hooked bar or bolt, F. It will be seen that the axis of the hooked bar or bolt is in the eye E, and that of the eye in the plate A, so that said bar or bolt has a swiveled joint, E E. From the plate B there projects at or about right angles a flange, G, and from the edge or upper face of the latter there project upward flanges H H, leaving a space, J, between them, and a space or groove,
is, between them and the plate B. The edges 7 a of the flanges which face each other are rounded or beveled at a a. One or more openings 11 b,- are made in the flange G.
The operation is as follows: When the shutter is closed and it is desired to lock the same the bar or bolt F is swung over the flange G, so that the hooked end 0 will enter an opening in said flange and catch therein. The bottom of the bar or bolt will lay on the flange G, and its sides rest against the back plate A and the flanges H H, so that the bar or bolt is embraced or guarded and firmly held on its two sides and bottom, and thereby well se-,
cured. Additional security may be afforded by means of a hook, D, on the plate A. When the shutter is bowed the bar or bolt is swung around that it will pass into the space J and the hooked end dropped into the opening 1). The rounded or beveled edges of the flanges H, embrace the sides of the bar or bolt, and
thus prevent the latter from swinging or turning on the point 0 as an axis, whereby accidental opening or closing and rattling or shaking of the shutters are prevented. \Vhen the shutters are to be closed, the bar or bolt may be so swung as to be brought over the catch 0, and laid thereon so as to fit snugly in place and be out of the way.
1 am aware that swinging and sliding bolts have been constructed and operated in various modes, and do not claim them broadly; but
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The improved shutter-fastening, consisting of the hooked bar or bolt F, having a swiveled joint, E E, and catch 0, in combination with the flanged plate Gr, having openings b I), the upright flanges H H with intervening space J and the space or groove K, constructed and adapted to operate as described, for the purpose set forth.
The above signed February, 1872.
by me this era day of FRANCIS XAVIER BRENNER.
