UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

'FBUIT JAB-COVEB CLAMP.
(Be it lmown that I, "EMBRY EAs'rMAN 1'1ARDY,'=tUC ltlZGI1 of-the United Stat/espre- -si'dingr.at =Bayside,= in t-hevcotmty of Queens SHaind-Btate Of New iYonka'liave'i nventedueertain' new amid auseful: Improvements in Fruit- ;lanCover Clamps; of-avh-iolr theifollow-i ng 1s =a; specification.
"My invention I relates to improvements; in
fruit-jan-c0rer-olamps,-'andl the 'objecb'ofemy improvement is simplicity: andneeonomy i in construction and. oonreniencevuxl efiiciency iii-use.
In theaccompanyingfdrawing Figure 1 is a 'plan view-of #myiiimpmved Ifruitsjar cover-olamp amid a t'fDIMtZ-JMZJOOVEI \vith'anhich-it is engaged.
Fig. 2 is a similanvieav ofrthessame onion enlargedrscale, W-it-lnthmpartsin an inter- .o mediate position.
Fig. 3 is a similar view ofthezsamewvith the parts in thetnlh open position.
Fig. 4 is a botbomn iew -.withtthe\parts in the position shown in Fig. 1.
Figs. '5and6- are similarwiews with the parts in the positions shown in Figs. 2- and 3 respectively.
Fi 7 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line w a: of Fig. 2.
'0 My improved fruit-jar cover-clamp is made of sheet material and comprises a handle member 10 which has mounted thereon at one end a pair of clamping members, respectively an inner clamping member 11 and 5 an outer clamping member 12, the said clamping members havin each a pair of prongs 13 for engaging with the upper portion of a fruit-jar cover 14.
The handle member 10 has near the outer 0 end a hole 15 in which is positioned a rivet 16 for operatively holding the outer clamping member 12. Inwardly from the ho 15 there is provided in the han a member 10 a key-hole slot consisting of the longi- 5 tudinally directed slot 17 on the side remote from the hole 15, and in alinement therewith, and which opens into the relatively enlarged portion 18 on the side adjacent the said hole 15.
l The portion 19 of the border wall of the enlarged portion 18 that is adjacent the straight portion 17, and on each side, is slightly inclined. forming generally an obtuse angle with the adjacent wall of the said straight portion 17, and is also slightly curved, suitably to serve as a cam surface .-Specifice'tion of Letters Patent.
winaloclcingi theolamp to the cover irr-a manmer tobedescribed.
A rivet r205 )asses through the 1 said key rholo sloti'2l a l-servesoperatively to secure =:ehe inner'elampins 'member 11 to the handle 10.
.T heolanipinganembers 11=and 12are gen "orally-similar: anrbcomprisereach a pair of iraldial' arms v9:2, ihavingtiheiprongs 1-3--atthe neuter -.ends, the said i a'rms being disposed generally= at an-- obtuse angle and being can unected ati thetjunetion at the inner -en'ds by (the. plate lik-e body 1 portion The body iportioni23 isiprovided with a sliort-* slot 24 thatiis anfihfor the rivets IG andQO. The sslot 24:;extmtisllateraily across the biseeting radius.
:The: portion of the slot. 24 'oir'one side of ithmcenter only is used at one time inclampling, fifor ruse =.in none direetion, \the portion thereof .on rthemther -side being used for vclampin'g' in the other direction, the-device -sbeirrg usable eeither fright f'hande'd or left handed.
In use, at 1 the startt-he inner clamping "member 11 is separated or opened out from the outer clamping member 12 to permit the clamping members being placed on the cover 14, as shown in Fig. 3, the pin 20 bein positioned in the straight portion 17 o the key-hole slot 21. The rivet 20 is then pushed along the slot 17, carrying With it the inner clamping member 11, until the prongs 13 engage with the cover 14. Then by applying a turning movement to the handle after the intermediate position described and shown in Fig. 2 in the direction desired the pins 16 and 20 slide to the ends of the cross slots 24, one on one side and the other on the 7 other side of the axis, the clamping members 11 and 12 turning accordingly, and pressure being applied to the prongs 13 due to such movement, until at the final stage the pin 20 engages with one of the cam surfaces 19. As the turning movement is continued, a slight movement along the said cam surface 19 serves to effect a rigid clamping, whereby the device is securely clamped to the cover and the tightenin of the cover on the jar may be freely app ied as desired.
A reverse movement of the handle effects a release of the device.
The rivet 20 is easily moved outwardly by the thumb of the same hand that holds the handle, the final movement of the said rivet to the locking position in engagement with the cam surface 19 being effected by the turning movement of the handle.
The end of the handle 10 remote from the clamping .nembers is formed into a screwdriver bit and the body portion adjacent the same as shown at 26 is provided with a square hole, suitable for use as a wrench.
I claim as my invention 1. A fruit-jar cover-clamp comprising a handle member and a pair of clamping members, the said clamping members each comprising a pair of radial arms having prongs at the outer ends and a body portion at the junction of the said arms, the said body portions having each a cross slot, the said handle member having a hole and a key-hole slot adjacent the said hole and in alinement therewith, and means for operatively connecting the said clamping members with the said handle member comprising a pin passing through the said hole and through the said cross slot in one of the said clamping members and a second pin passing through the said slot in the handle member and the cross slot in the other of the said clamping members.
2. A fruit-jar cover-clamp comprising a. handle member and a pair of clamping members, the said clampin members each comprising a pair of radia arms having prongs at the outer ends and a body ortion connecting the inner ends of the said arms, the
of prongs in spaced relation for engaging with the jar cover and connected to the said body portion, a pair of pins serving exclusively of all other connecting and supporting means, through the medium of the said handle member, as the means for operatively supporting and connecting the said clamping members, and being adapted to operatively connect the said body portions with the said handle member, the said handle member having a hole in which one of the said pins is fixedly secured, and the said handle member having a transversely directed cam slot for cooperating with the other of the said pins.
