l .un OPENER.
This invention relates to jar openers of the type having a handle portion and a band thereon-adapted to surround a jar4 cover and to be drawn into tight engagement therewith. I am aware that many ar openers of this type have been devised. ll such openers, however, as far as `I am aware, do not ip the jar cover tightly except when the giind is held in tight engagement by a manual force exerted on the iandle ortion of the opener. It is the primary ob]ect of my invention to provide a jar opener embodying means for drawing the band into tight engafrement about a jar cover and securely holding the same in such osition.
It is a further object o my invention to rovide a jar opener embodylng means for Idrawing the band into tight engagement about a jar cover and other means co-operating therewith for holding the band'so engaged and simultaneously therewith further tightening the band.
In the accompan ing drawing I have illustrated one speci c embodiment of my invention, 'but it will be understood that lthe Y invention can be otherwise embodied and that the drawin is'not to be construed as defining or limiting the scope of the invention, the claims appended to this specicationbeing relied upon for that urpose.
Referring to the figures of t e drawing .Fig 1 is a side elevation of my improved jar opener, showing the Ihandle portion thereof in section and the band thereof in place on a jar cover;
Fig. 2 isa plan view thereof, partially in section.
Referring more specifically to the drawing by reference characters, l indicates a piece of brass tubing, rectangular in cross-section, which forms the main handle Aportion of my improved jar opener. (3o-operating therewith is a steel band 2 adapted to surround a jar cover 3. The ends of this 'band are secured to a block 4 slidably mounted in .the handle 1, the band extending to the opposite sides of a brid e piece 5 secured-in the end of the handle screws 6. A toothed rack 7 is secured to t 1e block 4 as illustrated.
A pinion 8 on a shaft '9 carried by the plates 10 secured to the sides` of the handle is in mesh with the rack 7, an operating knob 11 being provided on the shaft. A pinionengaging slide'12 is connected bv a screw 13 to a stud 14 mounted inthe handle 1. Rota- Applioation iled A pril 27, 1925. Serial No. `138,056.
tionof the'screw is adapted to move the slide into and out yof engagement with the pinion.
n is believed that the parution andadvantages of my invention will be clear without further description herein. "The resiliency of the band 2 is suchthat it normally s reads out to its full opening, thereby rawing the block 4 to the` extreme left end of the handle 1. `In operation the band is placed over a coverto be removed and the shaft 9 rotated in the direction of the arrow to draw thel block inwardly and close the band onto the cover. When the band is in tight engagement with the cover the screw 13 is rotated to engage the plate 12 with the pinion. As seen in Fig. 1, the plate engages a pinion tooth above the pinion axis in a manner to not only hold the pinion against backward rotation but to fur-ther rotate the same in the direction of the Aarrow. Thus this rotation of the screw not only holds the band-tightly enga ed with the cover, but serves to further tig ten theple and cheap to manufacture and the o c eration vthereof is most eicient. rllhe resi iency of the band 2 normally holds the de- Y vice in the wide open position for engaging the largest size covers. Covers of any size from the largest to the smallest can be engaged and removed with like efficiency. Furthermore, the operation thereof requires no hard hand gripping .of the handle portion, as do most jar openers, and when once in position on a cover, the opener is securely eld in such position until removed by releasing the screw 13.
, Having thus described my invention, what I, claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent is 1. A jar opener comprising the combination of a handle, a member movably carried thereby, a band connected to the member and adapted to surround a jar cover, means on the handle for moving the member to' draw ico the band tightly about the cover, and means for holdingthe band so drawn and thereafter further tightening the band and simultaneously therewith holding t-he same against loosening, the band tightening and holding means being movable relative to the handle in the said band tightening and holding operations. l
2. A jar opener comprising the combination of a handle portion, a band connected thereto and adapted to surround a jar cover, rotary means for drawing'the band tightly about the cover, means operative on the rotary means to hold the same in the bandtightened position, and cooperating means to further tighten the band relative to the handle.
3. A jar opener comprising the combination of a handle portion, a band connected thereto and adapted to surround a jar cover, rotary means for drawing the band tightly about the cover, and means operative on the rotary means to further tighten the band and hold the same in its tightened position.
4. A jar opener comprising the combination of a handle, a toothed rack therein, a band connected to the rack and adapted to surround a jar cover, a'pi'nion engaging the rack and adapted upon rotationy in one direction to tighten the band on the cover, and means for engaging the pinion to rotate the same in the said band tighteningdirection.
