Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO STEOIIHAN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO TI-IF. INDIAN- APOLIS DROP FORGING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,263, dated February 27, 1900.
Application filed January 8, 1900- Serlal No. '725. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO STEOHHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
Heretofore in the manufacture of Wrenches some difficulties have been experienced in properly attaching the step block for the screw to the handle. When formed integral with the handle, such step-block has prevented the slides for the movable wrench-jaw from passing over the same, except when such slides were severedat the rear side, and thus weakened, which has been done in one method of making wrenches. When put on as a separate part, such step-block has been somewhat insecure, unless attached with a larger expense than is desirable.
The object of my invention is to' provide in an inexpensive and secure manner a stepblock which shall be integral with the shank of the Wrench-handle.
My invention also secures a moderate elasticity to the wrench, which is desirable. A wrench embodying my said invention will be first fully described and the novel features thereof then pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a side elevation of a wrench embodying my said invention, the grip or han-Y dle proper being shown in section; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the main wrench member, includingthe tang for the handle before the said tang is bent around into place to form and carry the step-block, the position when bent and completed ybeing indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 3, a detail sectional view as seen from the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 4, and Fig. 4 a detail sectional view as seen from the dotted line 4 4 in Figs. l and 3.
The wrench in question is or may be of a common form, except as to the matter in question, and is commonly composed of a main member A, having a permanent jaw B, a sliding jaw C, having bands c' c2, which pass around the main member A, and a handle or grip D.
The main member A is prolonged into a handle-tang E, which in my improved construction is made about twice as long as usual, and its extreme end c is swaged into form to constitute a step for the screw S to the wrench. This tang is, as shown in the drawings, bent double in the middle, so that the step comes up to the proper position at the inner end of the handle or grip. By this means this step is formed integrally with the handle-shank and at the same time does not prevent the assembling of the parts, as the loops of the jaw C are slipped over said tang and put in position before said tang is bent.
The band d on the grip D may be prolonged,
as shown, to cover the step-block e and the immediately-adjacent portion of the main member A. A This construction is, as will be seen, very strong, substantial, and durable and is also inexpensive, while the step, being carried by the doubled tang, possesses a slight degree of elasticity, which I have found to be beneficial in the practical use of a wrench.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure i by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wrench wherein the screw step is formed on the end of a prolonged handletang, which tang is bent around upon itself bringing the step into position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a wrench, of the main member having the usual stationary jaw, a sliding jaw secured to the said main member by loop portions passing around the same, a screw for operating said sliding portion, and a step upon which said screw is mounted, said step being formed upon the end of a prolonged handle-tang extending out from the main member, which said handletang is, after the sliding jaw has been placed upon the main portion, bent around upon itself, bringing the step into position, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 2d day of January, A. D. 1900.
