To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E. LANE, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and etate of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements `in Skiving-Machines; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to skiving machines and more particularly to blank feeding mechanism for machines for skiving box toes and counters for boots and shoes.
In a well known form of skiving machine of the type illustrated in S. Letters Patent to Jacob R. Scott, 760,082, dated May 17, 1904, a pile or series of blanks is supported in a race-way or magazine from the bottom of which one blank at a time is fed to the pressure and die rolls and to the skiving mechanism by devices which are constructed 4and arranged to be automatically disconnected from their actuating mechanism when the pile of blanks in the magazine is reduced to a predetermined minimum, s-o that the feeding of blanks will cease while the other portions of the machine continue in operation. In this type of machine, however, the feeding devices are often given a shortened feeding stroke or movement before being brought to their final position of rest, and in such shortened stroke are liable to advance a blank to the die roll and pressure devices, but out of proper time relation to the movement of the die roll, thereby causing a mutilation of the blank or stoppage of the machine or damage to or breakage of some of its parts.
Vrlhe primary object of the present invention is to avoid this objection by so constructing the feeding devices and their actuating mechanism that when the pile of blanks reaches a predetermined minimum and the feeding devices and their actuating mechanism are disconnected, there will be no liability of a shortened feeding movement or stroke.
With this and other objects in view, apparent to those skilled in the art from the accompanying specification, the present invention consists of the devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and more particularly defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate .a preferred form of the present invention; Figure 1 is a side elevati-oil of a leather skiving machine of the general type disclosed in Letters Patent to Jacob R. Scott, No. 969,987 and embodyingthe present invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of the middle portion of the machine; Figs. 3 and a are enlarged details in side and rear elevation respectively, of portions of the tripping lever with its connections; Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 6 is a vertical section on line 66, Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a side elevation, and Fig. 8 is a transverse section on line 8 8, Fig. 7, of the crank and connections for actuating the trip lever.
In the machine illustrated in the drawings, the blanks to be skived are arranged in a vertical pile in the hopper or magazine l, the lowermost blank being pressed down by a follower 7i secured t-o the lower end of the vertically movable rod 2 having the weighted upper end 3 which carries the adjustable abutment screw d. rEhe rod 2 is provided with `the rack 5 for raising and lowering the follower by power, as is well known in this type of machine. The blanks are fed through the passage or opening 8 to the die roll 9 and pressure devices l0 mounted respectively upon the shafts ll and l2 driven by suitable gearing from the main driving shaft 13. ylChe die roll is provided with the customary blank positioning die cavity il and the skiving knife 15 is supported rigidly upon the frame of the machine directly behind the bight of the die roll and pressure devices. One blank after another from the bottom of the pile of blanks in the magazine is fed to the die roll at the predetermined time with relation to the position of the die cavity by means of the feeding fingers 18 secured to the front of the feed slide 19 which is provided with the depending ears 20 in which is mounted the transverse driving pin 2l.
TheY feed slide is actuated to make its feeding and its return stroke from an oscillating shaft 23 mounted in the frame of the machine, and driven by suitable connections from themain shaft. Fixed upon the oscillating shaft 23 is the lever 2li, to the upper end of which is pivotally connected the link 25 provided at its free end with the upstanding shoulder or abutment 2G and recess or notch 27. The free end of the link is arranged to be raised or lowered to render the feed slide actuating mechanism operative or inoperative, by means of the lever 30 pivoted at one end on the frame of the machine and carrying at the other end a cam roll 31 located in a cam path 32 formed in the lower portion of the link. Then the link is in its raised or operative position, the pin 21 on the feed slide will be engagedin the notch 2T in the link and the slide will be given alternate feeding and return movements. When this link is lov.- ered the notch is withdrawn from the pin 2l so that the link is inoperative to impart to thefeed slide a return movement. The shoulder 26is of suliicient height, however, to engage the pin 21 even when `the link is in its lowermost or inope ative position, so that the feed slide will always be brought to the end of its feeding movement as final position of rest. i
The lever 30 and link 25 are raised and lowered by suitable mechanism, including a treadle pivoted upon the frame `of the machine, a pivoted lever 36 and connections 37 and 38, the treadle being depressed by the operator to raise the link into operative position, and the reverse movements taking place under the action of the spring 39. The treadle is held in depressed position by means of a latch lever d10 which may be actuated against the tension of spring Lill by the foot of the operator if for any reason during the regular operation of the machine it is desired to bring the feed slide to rest. 1n practice the operator careful to trip the latch lever il-,O only during a feed movement of the feed slide so that the latter will complete that feeding stroke and then come to rest, 'thus avoiding all possibility of a shortened feeding` stroke and of mutilation of a bla-nk or damage to the machine. y 1n machines of the type above referred to means are provided for automatically rendering the feedslide actuating mechanism inoperative when the pile of blanks in the hopper is reduced to a predetermined minimum, and these meanscoinprise briefly a lever pivoted upon a fixed support, one end of the lever extending into the path of movement of the abutment screw 4t to be engaged by said screw when the supply of blanks is nearly exhausted and the other end of the lever being connected 'to thelatch lever 1- 0 to actu'ate the lat-ter and permit the spring 39 to throw the link 25 into its lowermost or inoperative position.
lt will be observed that the point in the operation of such machine when the link 25 is dropped to its lowermost or inoperative position bears no fixed or predetermined time relation to the movement of the feed slide, but depends wholly upon the movement of the follower which rests upon the pile of blanks. Consequently, the lowering of the link may occur during either the feeding or the return movement of the feed slide. lin the former event the shoulder 2G will continue to actua-te the feed slide until it reaches its innermost position, where it comes to its permanent position of rest. ln the latter event, however, the feed slide and its actuating mechanism will be immediately disconnected and the feed slide'will stop wherever it iay happen to be, but on the next feeding stroke of tl link :25 the shoulder 26 will again engage the pin 2l and the feed slide will return to its innermost position where it comes permanently to rest.
1t sometimes happens during 4this shortcned feeding movement that the blank at the bottom of the pile is carried by frictional engagement with the feeding fingers through the passageway 8 and into engagement with the die roll and pressure devices. A blank so fed, however, will not be presented to the die roll in proper relation to the die cavity and as a result the blank will be mutilated and the machine may be stopped or some of its parts damaged or broken.
This objection is avoided in the present invention by providing means for automatically actuating the latch lever n'l0 in predetermined time relation to the movements of the feed slide so that the link Q5 will never be lowered during the return or idle stroke of the feed slide and the latter cannot make ay shortened feeding stroke imme diately prior to its coming to its permanent position of rest.
1n the machine illustrated in the drawings, these results are accomplished in the following manner ltotatively mounted in a boss or projection 15 at the top of the frame of the machine is the stud or shaft 16, one end of which 47 is eccentric (see Fig. 6) .i Pivoted upon this eccentric portion L17 is the lever 4:8, one end of which 119 extents into the path of movement of the abutment screw Il, while the other end 50 is connected by means of the rod 5l to the latch lever 4:0.
It will be noted that the nut 63 not only holds the washer 62 firmly against the bushing 60, but also serves to clamp the bearing screw 61 in the desired adjustment upon the crank arm G7.
The above described construction is such that the stud 46 is oscillated from the shaft 23 in predetermined timed relation to said shaft, and the eccentric 47 is so arranged that it will raisethe lever 48 while the feed .slide is making its feeding stroke, the end 50 of this lever being restrained by the rod 5l and spring 41. rlhe relative lengths of the two arms of the lever 48 are such that the throw of the eccentric is multiplied a number of times at the free end 49 of the lever, which is thus given at. each cycle of operation of the machine a vertical movement of considerable extent, very much greater than the downward movement of the follower or abutment screw during the same period. So long as the abutment screw 4 has not descended far enough to be engaged by the upwardly moving end 49 of the lever 48, the machine willcontinue to operate regularly, but when the pile of blanks in the hopper' are reduced to the predetermined minimum, the screw 4 will be in position to be engaged by the arm 49 on its upward movement and when so engaged will stop the free end of the lever and further movement of the eccentric will actuate the other arm 5() against the tension of spring 4l and through the rod 5l will trip the latch 40 and permit the spring 39 to Vraise the treadle and depress the link. Since this must occur, if it occurs at all, during the feeding` stroke of thefeed slide, the link will continue to actuate the feed slide until the latter reaches its innermost position, where it will remain at. rest while its actuating mechanism continues to operate.
Owing to the fact that the movement of the free end 49 of the lever 48 is of relatively large extent compared with the movement of the abutment screw 40 during a cycle of operation of the machine, the latch 40 will be actuated at substantially the same point in such cycle of operation and the link lowered at substantially the same position of the feed slide.
lllhe operation of the above described machine is as follows :e-A pile of blanks having been inserted in the magazine with the follower properly adjusted and in engagement with the topmost blank and the link 25 in its lowered or inoperative position, the main shaft 13 is set in operation, 'thereby ausing the shaft 23 to oscillate. This shaft in turn imparts feeding movements to the link 25, but without actuating the feed slide. Through the crank arm 67 oscillations are imparted to the eccentric 47 resulting in regular upward and downward movement of the end 49 of lever 50.
When the operator desires to set the feeding mechanism .in operation, he depresses the treadle 35, thus raising the link 25, and holds the treadle down and the link raised until the link reaches the limit of its inward movement, when the notch 27 will engage the pin 2l, the downward movement of the treadle 35 at this time permitting the latch 40 to become operative to hold the treadle in its lowest and the link in its highest position. Thereafter the movements of the link will be imparted to the feed slide and the latte-r will feed `the blanks successively through the passageway 8 'to the die rolland presi-:ure devices, and thence to the skiving knife.
As the blanks are fed from the bottom of the pile or series, the height of the pile diminishes and the followerl descends until its abutment screw reaches a position where it will be engaged by the free end 49 of lever 48 while the latter is making its upward movement due to the os illation of the eccentric 47. The continued movement of the eccentric raises the opposite end 50 of the lever and actuatesthe latch 40 to release the treadle, whereupon the spring 39 in'miediately raises the treadle and depresses the link 25. The parts are s adjusted that this occurs during the feeding stroke of the feed slide, and preferably at or near the end of its feeding movement. lf the link is lowered before the feeding movement completed, the feed slide will nevertheless continue to be advanced byV the link until the limit of its inward movement is reached, where it will come to and remain at rest.
The follower may now be raised and a new supply of blanks placed in the magazine and the feeding' mechanism again set in operation as above described.
lllhile the illustrated embodiment of the invention is shown as a feeding device for skiving machines, the feeding device is not, however, limited to use in a skiving machine but may be employed `in any machine in which blanks are intermittently presented in timed relation to the operation of the blank treating mechanism and in which the feeding device is started and stopped while the .mechanism continues to operate.
Ha fing thus described and explained the nature and `principle of the present invention, and what is now7 considered the preferred form of said invention, I claim:

Blank feeding mechanism for skiving machines comprising', means for supporting a Series of blanks, a feed slide for feeding a blank from the series, actuating devices for the feed slide, and means controlled by the series of blanks for disconnecting the feed slide and its actuating mechanism only when the feed slide is at the end of its feeding movement.

Blank feeding` mechanism for skiving machines comprising, a magazine for supporting a pile of blanks, a follower engaging the topmost blank of the pile, a feed slide for feeding the lowermost blank of the pile, actuating devices for the feed slide, and connections between the follower and said devices Operating automaticallyT when the follower reaches a in'edetermined point to disconnect the feed slide and aclaiating` devices at la predetermined position of the feed slide.

Blank feeding mechanism for skiving .machines comprising, a magazine for supporting a pile of blanks, a follovver engaging the topmost blank of the pile, a feed slide for feeding the lowermost blank of the pile, actuating mechanism for the feed slide, means for disconnecting the feed slide and its actuating devices, a member moving in timed relation to said actuating mechanism 'lor rendering the disconnecting means operative, devices for moving said member, and means connected with the follower and arranged to come into position to be engaged by said member.

Blank feeding mechanism for .skiving machines comprising, a magazine for supporting a pile of blanks, a follower engaging 'the topmost blank of the pile, a feed slide for feeding the loivermost blank of the pile, actuating devices for the feed slide, means for disconnecting the feed slide and its actual ing devices, a lever connected at one end to said means, a pivotal support for the lever midmi)` its ends, means for moving the support in timed relation to thev actuating devices for the feed slide, and an abutment connected with the follower and arranged to come into position to be engaged by the free end of the lever during the movement of the pivotal support.

Blank feeding mechanism for skiving `machines comprising, a magazine for supmeans for disconnecting the shaft and feedslide, a lever, an eccentric upon which the lever is pivoted, one end of the lever being connected to said means for disconnecting the shaft and feed slide and the other end extending into the path of movement of the abutment carried by the follower, and cou-A nections between the shaft and eccentric for actuating the eccentric in timed relation to the feed slide.

Blank feeding mechanism for striving machines comprising, a magazine for supporting a pile of blanks, a feed slide for feeding the loivermost blank of the pile, means for actuating the feed slide, devices including a latch under the conrcl of the operato-r for rendering said means inoperative, and automatic mechanism controlled by the pile of blanks in the magazine and oii f ating at a predetermined point in the c) .le of operation of the machine for actuating the latch.
12. Blank feeding mechanism for skiving machines comprising, a magazine for supporting a stack of blanks, a slide for feeding the blanks one at a time, actuating mechanism for the feed slide, means for connecting the slide with its actuating mechanism,
stacknf blanks for disconnecting the feed slide and its actuating mechanisnl, means for setting said devices for operation when the stack is reduced to a predetermined point, and means to limit the operation of said devices to a predetermined period in the cyclo of operation of the machine after the stack has been reduced to said predetermined point.

Blank feeding mechanism for skiving machines comprising, blank feeding means, means for operating the feeding means, devices for stopping the feeding means while the machine continues to operate, and means to limit the operation of said stopping mech anism to a period when the feeding means has reached the end of its feeding movement.

Blank feeding mechanism for skiving machines comprising, a blank positioning device, means for feeding blanks to ,said device, means for actuating the feeding means, means for connecting the Jieeding means with its actuating means, means for moving the positioning device in timed relation to the feeding means, means for operating the connecting means for disconnection of the feeding means and its actuating mechanism, and means to insure that the connection of the feeding means with its actuating mechanism during the continued operation of the machine will operate to advance the next blank in timed relation to the movement ot' the blank positioning de ice l5. A blank feeding device for supplying blanks to the skiving mechanism of a skiving machine comprising, a blank positioning device, a feeding member, means for actuating said member, devices :for connecting and disconnecting said member and its actuating mechanism While the skiving mechanism continues to operate, and means torinsure that the connection of said member with its actuating mechanism for feeding blanks will be in a position to present the next succeeding blanks in timed relation to the movement of the blank positioning` device.
