To all whom-it may concern -.Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SCARLETT, a citizen of the United States, and-resident of East Lynn, county of Essex, Commonwealtlrof Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Heel-Nailing .Machines, of which the following: description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specificatiomlike characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of the several views. p i v i This inventionhas for its object the production of a heel nailing machine such as is shown and described in myprior application, Serial No. 836,014, filed May 2, 1914, of which. this. present application is adivision. In thenailing of heels onto shoes as ordinarily carried out in power machines, trouble has been frequently experienced with the crushing and breaking downof the "lasts under the thrust ofthe nailing head, this being due to the fact that the usual nailing machines heretofore inuse have not had any adequate means for gaging and accurately determining the position of the last wlth referenceto the height of the heel and the tfinal limitof the stroke of the power head for the various different styles of heels and kinds of lasts. x
The prime object ofthe present invention is to provide means whereby any given last with any selected style and height of heel may bequicklyand conveniently positioned and clamped in accurate known relation to the stroke of the power head whereby the extent of compression by the power head in pricking and nailing operations can be definitely determined, and

The above features of theinvention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken. in connection with the accompanying drawings, and will be thereafter pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 shows in side elevation the operative parts of a heel nailing machine constructed in accordance with myinvention; and Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail showing my improved two-step locking device as seen from the front of the machine.

It will be understood that in use the handle 7 will be operated to depress the head 5 carrying the nailing plate 6 against the tension of the spring 10 until the first looking notch 15 snaps under the abutment 17 The handle 39 engaging the gear 35 will then be swung a distance sufficient to bring the heel, as it is set in place on the shoe resting on the jaclr, into proper relation or preliminary pressing engagement with the nailing plate 6. The amount of swing of said handle 39 and gear 35 for this purpose varies with the different heights of heels and sizes and styles of shoes. Thereupon the heel being brought to the proper positionby op- :eration of the handle 39, the powerhead l1 descends to prick the holes, at the sametime pressing down upon the nailing plate 6 to give the final compression to the heel, and as this occurs, the second step or notch 16 of the locking bar 13 snaps in place under the abutment 17 holding the nailing plate down to keep the heel properly compressed "as the nails are driven. In these operations it will be noted that it is possible to determine the extent of secondary or power compression of the heel with exactness, since the preliminary compression, as effected bythe operation of the jack handle 39, is to a definite and predetermined extent, and of course the extent-of movement of the power head is likewise a definite invariable quantity.
