Application filed September 16, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Emma E. LANE, a citizen of the .United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in skiving-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to skiving machines and more particularly, to a blank feeding device for machines adapted to skive box toes and counters for boots and shoes.
Certain types of machines for skiving box toe and counter blanks employ a cavity roll or movable matrix to position the blank while it is being skived. The cavity in which the blanks are held has approximately the shape of the died-out blanks, so that it is necessary to accurately position the blank over the cavity While it is being skived. When the machine is in operation, the blanks are automatically presented to the cavity by a feeding device which moves in timed relation to the movement of the cavity roll or matrix. It is often desirable to stop the feeding device While the skiving mechanism continues to operate, to fill the blank magazine, and for various other reasons. Upon restarting the feeding device while the skiving mechanism continues to operate, if the feeding device makes a partial feed stroke, a blank may be presented in untimed relation to the skiving mechanism, so that the blank will be spoiled or the machine may be injured.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a blank feeding device for a skiving machine which will insure that the blanks will be fed in timed relation to the operation of the matrix or die roll.
In accordance with this object, one feature of the invention contemplates the provision in a skiving machine having a blank feeding device, of means for connecting the feeding device with its actuating mecha nism, and means movable in timed relation to the movement of said mechanism for locking the connection of the feeding device with its actuating mechanism and for controlling the release of said connection.
While the illustrated embodiment of the invention is shown as a feeding device for Specification of Letters Patent.
foot treadle is limited to Patented Mar. 26, 1918. Serial No. 50,983.
a skiving machine, the feeding device is not, however, limited to use in a skiving machine but may be employed in any machine in which blanks are intermittently fed and in which the feeding device is started and stopped while the machine for treat ing the blanks continues in operation.
In the skiving machine illustrated in my co-pending application vice is arranged to be disconnected from its actuating mechanism automatically by means operated through the blanks in the magazine, and by a foot treadle, the automatically operated means is controlled to disconnect the feeding device from its actuating mechanism at the time when the feeding device completes its feeding movement; but the feeding device may be disconnected from its actuating mechanism by the treadle at any time.
In the preferred form of the present invention, the disconnection of the feeding device from its actuating mechanism by the the time when the feeding device completes its feeding move-- ment. Accordingly, another feature of the invention contemplates the provision in a skiving machine having a blank feeding device and actuating mechanism therefor, of means to connect the feeding device with its actuating mechanism, means under the con trol of the operator to release the connection of the feeding device with its actuating mechanism, and means to permit operation of the releasing means to disconnect the feeding device from its actuating mecha nism only at a predetermined point in the cycle of operation of the machine.
These and other features of the invention will appear from an inspection of the accompanying drawings and the following detailed description of the construction and operation of the machine illustrated therein.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a leather skiving machine embodying the preferred form of the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the upper portion of the machine showing the feeding device and its actuating mechanism; Fig. 3 is a side elevation; Fig. 4 is a plan view; and Fig. 5 is a front elevation showing in detail the feed locking latch and its locking device.
The machine illustrated in the drawings Serial No. 866,064, filed October 10, 1914, the blank feeding deis substantially the same in construction, arrangement and mode of operation of its various parts as the machine disclosed in the patent to Scott No. 969,987, patented September 13, 1910. In this machine the blanks to be treated are placed in avertical stack in a magazine 12 and pressed against a bedplate l t by a follower 16. The blanks are fed one at a time by a feed slide 18 which advances the blanks to the bite of a pressure roll 20 and a die roll :22 which has a blank positioning die cavity 24:. The operation of the rolls advances the blanks against a skiving knife 26 which has its cutting edge between the rolls at a point approximately opposite the point of contact of the rolls with the blank. The machine is designed to skive one blank for each revolution of the rolls, and. the feed slide makes a complete reciprocation in timed relation to the rolls and presents the blank to the rolls so that it will register with the die cavity A l. The feed slide is actuated by means of a feed lever 28 connected with a yoke 30 which is oscillated by means of a cam on the main drive shaft. The feed lever and feedslide are connected and disconnected during the continuous operation of the skiving mechanism by raising and lowering the lever 28. When the lever is 'aised, a slot 32 on its upper side engages a pin 34 on the bottom of the feed slide, and the feed lever and slide are connected to move in unison. The feed lever is raised and lowered by a foot treadle 36 with which the lever is connected by a distance arm 38 having a roller 40, a link 42, a lever 4:4, and a link 46. "When the treadle has been moved down to connect the feed slide with the lever 38, the treadle is held in its lowered position by means of a latch 4:8, and when the treadle is released from the latch, it is automatically raised by the spring l9, thereby discormectingthe feed lever and feed slide. The construction described above is substantially the same as that of the patent hereinbefore referred to.
During the operation of the machine, the rolls rotate continuously and the feed lever is reciprocated continuously. The feed slide cannot be disconnected from the feed lever during the forward or feeding stroke, even when the feed lever is lowered by the treadle, because an abutment 50 on the feed lever will carry the feed slide to the end of its feeding movement and leave it there. However, if the feed lever is lowered during the back or return stroke of the feed slide, the slide will be disconnected from the feed lever and left in the place it happens to be when the feed lever is lowered. Since the feed lever continuously reciprocates, its next forward movement will carry the feed slide to the end of its feeding movement. Should the feed slide be disconnected in a position far enough back on its return stroke so that blanks in the magazine could come in contact with the bedplate, the next forward stroke of the feed slide would tend to carry the blank into the feed rolls in an untimed relation to the movement of the rolls and l'nutilate the blank, or the blank might be clamped between a gate 52 and the slide 18. T avoid the feeding of blanks in untimed relation to the operation of the skiving mechanism, the latch is is locked from movement during the return stroke of the feed slide so that the treadle 36 cannot be moved to disconnect the feed lever from the feed slide during its return stroke. The latch is unlocked only when the feed slide approximately at the end of its feeding stroke so that the feed slide may be disconnected at the end of its feeding stroke. Since the feed slide can only be disconnected at the end if the feeding stroke, its connection will be made at this point, which will insure that the feed slide will present a blank in timed relation to the movement of the skiviug rolls because the feed slide will make a complete return and feeding stroke in presenting the blank.
The lock for preventing movement of the latch is mounted on a ln'acket 54: which attached to the machine frame directly above the latch 48. A locking lever 56 pivotally mounted on a stud 58 in the bracket 54: and has an abutment pin 60 which is adapted to swing over a cam G2 on the upper side of the latch l8. A ratchet arm G l is pivotally mounted on the stud 58 beneath the locking lever and is connected by a link (36 with an arm mounted on the end of the feeding cam sha' z 70. The shaft continually oscillates the ratchet arm (Si in timed relation to the movement of tee feed slide, and during the feeding stroke of the feed slide the ratchet arm and locking lever 56 are connected and moved together. The ratchet arm carries a spring pressed pawl 72 which is mounted in a position to engage a tooth 7 f projecting from the side of the locking lever 56 and lock the lever to the ratchet arm for movement therewith. The ratchet arm makes a connection with the locking lever when the feed lever 28 is at the end of its return stroke, as shown in Fig. 1, and the movement of the ratchet arm during the feeding stroke of the feed lever carries the locking lever across the cam 62 and brings the locking lever to an unlocking position just before the feed lever 28 is at the end of its feeding stroke; this position is shown in Fig. 3. Then the lockinglever is in this position, the latch d8 can be moved to release the foot trcadle 86. Upon the completion of the feeding stroke, the ratchet arm is moved to bring a tail 76 on the pawl 72 into engagement with a set screw TS, mounted in a boss 80 on the bracket 54:, to 'discons nect the pawl from the tooth Tl'and permit mg lever.
the locking lever 56 to swing back against a set screw 82 mounted in a boss 8% on the bracket 54. Then the locking lever is rein lookin aosition over the latch 48 durin b the greater part of the reciprocation of the feed slide, and is quickly moved back into locking position at the end of the feeding stroke. The arm 68 has a bolt and slot connection with the link 66 which permits an adjustment to vary the amplitude of oscillation of the ratchet :rm, and the set screw 78 can be adjusted to vary the time in which the pawl 72 will. be moved to release the lock This adjustment permits the locking device to be accurately timed with relation to themovement of the feed slide.
The latch 48 is provided with a foot treadle 90 by which it may be manually operated to release the treadle 36 when the locking lever is in the position shown in Fig. 3. In addition to the manually operated means for actuating the latch 48 in releasing the treadle 30, the latch is also provided with an automatically operated means for releasing the treadle 86 which is controlled by the movement of the blanks in the magazine. The follower 16 presses on the stack of blanks in the magazine and moves down with them as the blanks are fed from the bot tom. When the blanks in the stack have been reduced to a predetermined number, the follower 16 is arranged to engage the latch releasing mechanism and place it in condition to release the latch 48 from the treadle 5:30, but thelatch 48 will not be moved into releasing position until the feed slide has reached the end of its feeding stroke. To this end, the latch -18 is connected by a rod 92 with a stop lever 94 mounted on the machine frame above the magazine. As the follower 16 moves down, a pin 96 at its upper end engages the lever 94 and tends to raise th 1 rod 92. If the locking lever 56 is in the position shown in Fig. 3, the rod 90 will be raised and the latch 48 disconnected from the foot treadle 36. If, however, the lock ing lover in position over the cam 612, the latch cannot be moved and the action of the pin 96 on the lever 94 will distend a yielding section 98 in the rod 92 and hold it under tension until the locking lever 56 has been moved to the position shown in Fig. 3. Then the latch will be automatically raised by the sprin of the section 98 and the movement of the lever 94;. to release the treadle 36.
The latch :8 has a pawl 100 pivotally mounted on its side (Fig. which is adapted to engage an adjustable abutment. 102 on the treadle 36 when the treadle is moved down to connect the feed lever 28 with the feed slide. The pawl 100 is yieldingly mounted between a lug 10% on the latch 48, and a spring 106 mounted in a boss 108 opposite the lug 104. lVith this con struction, the treadle 36 can be moved down at any time to raise the feed lever for connection with the feet slide. Then the treadle 36 has been moved down, it will be held by the latch, and the latch cannot be moved to release the treadle until the feed slide has nearly reached the end of its feeding stroke, at which time the latch is unlocked.
