TATTING-THIMBLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19,
Application filed January 15, 1917. serial No. Ii QgiSli.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Eons M. GOURLEY, a citizen of the United States, and. resident of Ashton, in' the county of Sherman and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tatting- Thimbles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in thimbles and has particular reference to a novel and improved type of tatting thimble having means associated therewith to facilitate weaving of the thread or strand of cotton employed for this purpose.
An object of my invention is to provide a thimble of the class referred to adapted to be received upon one of the fingers of the users hand, said thimble having a notched hook member on the closed end mum amount of space and does not interfere in any manner with the usual use of the shuttle.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved tatting thimble will appear from the following detailed description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawn? in which:
re 1 is a perspective view of a tattinr;
thim le embodying the improvements of my invention, the same being shown in position for use on a hand; and
Fig. 2 is a fragmental elevational view .of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 10 designates in its entirety a thimble having the usual construction, the outer surface thereof being roughened as at 11 in the usual manner.
My invention includes a hook member formed of a wire strand or the like 12 extending from the end wall 13,0f the thiinble at the center point thereof. The strand 12 is bent intermediate its ends laterally to form a hook 14, said hook having a recess 15 therein on the inner side thereof.
In use the thimble is placed upon one of the fingers of the users hand, the middle or usual thimble receiving finger 16 being shown as receiving the thimble in Fig. 1. In lieu of the usual crochet hook the hook 1% of my invention is used, the same being inserted through the interstices of a garment woven by the tatting process in order to reach strands of cotton, silk or the like to draw the same through the said interstices. In the manner of performing this process at the present time the user finds it necessary to pick up a crochet hook and use it for this purpose. Thus it will be seen that my invention entirely obviates the necessity of a separate implement such as a crochet hook, the hook being carried by the thirnble.
From the above description taken in con nection with the accompanying drawing, it' is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a thimble having the usual closed end, of a tatting book carried thereby, said tatting hook extending from said closed end and being bent latercentral portion of said closed end and extendin longitudinally therefrom, the free end 0 said strand being. bent laterally to form a hook and provided with a recess.
3. The combination with a thimble having the usual closed end, of a hook, said hook being formed with a strand of wire connected at one of its ends to the central portion of the end .wall of said thimble, the free end of said strand bein bentlaterally to form a hook, said lateral y bent portion be- 10 ing provided with a recess on the inner side thereof for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof, I allix my signature hereto.
Mns. EDLA M. GOURLEY.
