This. invention relates, to locks, and particularly to means; forsecuring-inclosed- 10 sition the swinging gates of draw-bridges, roadways, etc. i r
The gates which are. locatedupondrawbridges and roadways to prevent. the passage of vehicles at certain times as, for example, when the draw is open, are usually arranged toswing from the two sides-of the bridge or roadway toward the center, andmeans is usually provided for locking the adjacent ends of the gates together. ItQsometimes happens that the gates of a draw-bridge. or roadway are closed. infront of a moving; vehicle which. cannot be stopped intime: to preventv running into the-gates and sometimes drivers of vehicles fail to see gates or to allow sufficient distancein which to stop, andthus come into collision therewith.

It will be noted that the plungers 84 are connected to the bases of the locking members'upon opposite.sides of the point of engagement of the bolt 18 with the keeper 16, and that thus they serve to hold the bases normally in rigid relation to the gates. In the event of unusual pressure upon either side of the gates, the springs 32 will permit the base members 28 and 30 to rock about one of the edges of their abutting faces as the gates tend to swing into separated relation, thus permitting a limited swinging movement of the gates without breaking oi the lock or injury to the gates. When the force which has caused the gates to be moved out of alinement ceases to act upon the gates, the springs 32 will tend to force the gates back into alinemeni; again.
What I claim 'asnew is:
1. In combination, locking means com prising a bolt guide and a keeper, relatively swinging supports for the respective members of said locking means, and means for normally maintaining said members rigid with said supports, said means being constructed to permit a yielding relative movement of said lockingmeans' and said supports in certain directions.
2. Locking means for use with twogates swinging about vertical axes. comprising a bolt guide and a keeper, a vertical bolt positively connecting said guide and said keeper, and yielding means for connecting said guide and said keeper to the respective gates.
3. Locking means for use with two gates which swing about vertical axes, comprising a boltguide and a keeper, a vertical bolt positively connecting said guide and said keeper, and means for connect ng said guide and said keeper to the respective gates constructed to permit rocking movement of said guide and keeper upon the gates when the locked gates are forced towardopen position.
LLocking means for use with two gates swinging about vertical axes, comprising a bolt guide and a keeper adapted to be located between the adjacent ends of the closed gates. a vertical bolt positively connecting said guide and said keeper, and means for yieldingly connecting said guide and said keeper to the respective gates constructed to permit said parts to rock relatively to the gates when the locked gates are forced toward open position.
5. Locking means for use with two gates adapted to close an opening and pivoted at the respective sidesof said opening. said means comprising a bolt guide, a keeper, and a bolt for positively interlocking said guide and said keeper, and means for maintaining said guide and keeper normally 1n rigid relation to said gates, constructed to permit a yielding relative movement of said locking means and said gates when excessive lateral pressure is brought to bear upon said gates.
6. Locking means for use with two gates adapted to close an opening and pivoted at the respective sides of said opening to swing into separated relation to each other, said means comprising a bolt guide and a keeper carried by the respective gates and a bolt for positively interlocking said guide and said keeper, and connections between said locking means and said gates constructed to permit a yielding relative movement of said locking means and said gates without disturbing the interlocked relation of the mem bers of said locking means.
7. Locking means for use with two gates adapted to close an opening and pivoted at the respective sides of said opening to swing into endwise relation to each other, said means comprising interlocking members carried by the opposed adiacent gate ends, means for positively holding said members against separating movement, and yielding connections between said interlocked members' and the gates.
8. Locking means for use with two gates adapted to close an opening and pivoted at the respective sides of said opening, said means comprising a bolt guide carried by one of said gates and a keeper carried by the other gate and a bolt for positively interlocking said guide and said keeper, said guide and keeper being confined upon said gates with provision for yielding movement lengthwise thereof.
9. Locking means for use with two gates adapted to close an opening and pivoted at the respective sides of said opening, said meanscomprising a bolt and a keeper carried by the respective gates, and means for confining said locking means against bodily lateral movement relative to said gates, constructed to permit a yielding rocking movement of said locking means relative to said gates when the members of said locking means are in locking position.
10. Locking means for use with two gates adapted to close an opening and pivoted at the respective sides of said opening whereby they swing about said pivots into separated relation. said means comprising a bolt guide and a keeper carried bythe respective gates and a bolt for positively interlocking said ing to swing into and out of endwise relation to each other, said means comprising interlocking members carried by the respective adjacent gate ends, said members and said ends having flat abutting faces, and means for yieldingly confining said members upon said ends constructed to permit each of said members to rock about an edge of its abutting face.
12. Looking means for use with two gates adapted to close an opening and pivoted at the respective sides of said opening, said means comprising a bolt guide carried by one of said gates, a keeper carried by the other gate, a bolt for positively interlocking said guide and said keeper and means for confining said guide and keeper upon the gates against lateral movement thereon constructed to permit endwise movement relative to said gates when force is applied to said gates tending to swing them into separated relation.
13. Locking means for use with two gates so pivoted at the respective sides ofan opening that they swing about said pivots into and out of endwise relation to each other, said locking means being adapted to be located between the adjacent ends of the gatesand means for yieldingly holding said locking means in abutting relation to said ends.
14. Locking means for use with two gates so pivoted at the respective sides of an opening that they swing about said pivots into and out of endwise relation to each other, said locking means being adapted to be located between the adjacent ends of said gates and yieldingly connected to said gates in abutting relation thereto, the respective members of said locking means having each two yielding connections at separated points.
15. Locking means for use with two gates so pivoted at the respective sides of an opening that they swing about said pivots into and out of endwise relation to each other, said locking means being adapted to be located between the adjacent ends of said gates and comprising interlocking'members, the respective members having flat abutting faces adapted to abut flat faces upon the gate ends, and yielding means for holding the respective members in abutting relation to the respective gate ends.
16. Locking means fOr use with two gates so pivoted at the respective sides of an opening that they swing about said pivots into' but to permit yielding movement lengthwise of said gates.
17: Looking means for use with two gates pivoted at the respective sides of an opening to swing into and out of endwise relation to each other, of meansfor locking said gates in closed position comprising a boltguide and a keeper, said lock members having flat faces adapted to abut the end faces of the gates, and means located at either side of the pointof engagement of the bolt with its keeper for yieldingly holding said guide and said keeperlin abutting relation to the respective associated gate ends.
18. The combination with roadway gates pivoted to swing in and out of endwise relation, of locking means for the adjacent ends of said gates, comprising interlocking members provided with means to maintain a positive but yielding connection between said gate ends against horizontal pressures, said interlocking members having a relatively vertical movement for being locked together or unlocked.
