SOAP CONTAINER AND DELIVERED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filed August 29, 1916. Serial No. 117,456.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Honwrrz, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 'in Soap Containers and Deliverers, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices designed to serve as soap containers and deliverers and particularly to devices of this class designed for use in garages and similar places where automobiles and other vehicles are stored or stabled, and where large amounts of soap are used in washing or cleamng such vehicles; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the class specified which is designed to serve as a container for soap'and which may be manipulated so as to deliver any desired amount of soap in condition for use, and whenever necessary and by means of which the soap will be kept clean at all times and in proper condition for use; a further object being to provide a device of the class speci fied which, in addition, to serving as a container and deliverer of soap, may also be made to serve as a container and deliverer for other plastic substances such as grease or heav oils; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in. a device of the class specified constructed and operated as hereinafter described and claimed.
- The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts 0 my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of my improved soap container and deliverer; v

In the practice of my invention, as shown in Flgs. l to 3 inclusive, of the drawing,ll provide a hollow cylindrical container a comprising a body portion a a bottom 5,
a supplemental and vertically movable bottom 0, a detachable cap (1 and a hopper e having a neck portion e which is screwed into the neck portion (1 of the cap d, and said cap is preferably conical in form and provided with a depending skirt portion d which is screwed onto the body a and said body a is provided with an interior thread a and the neck 6 of the hopper e is provided with vertical ports or passages 6 any desired number of which may be employed, and at one side of the hopper e and adjacent to the neck portion e is a discharge port or passage 6' controlled by a valve-e pivoted at e and provided with a handle, or tongue and finger piece c by which it may be manipulated.
The bottom 0 is provided with a vraised rim b and the body a of the device is provided, in the construction shown, with a base flange a and said body a fits loosely in (the bottom I) and is rotatable therein, and the rim 6 of said bottom is provided with retaining clips 6 which are secured thereto by screws b", or in any other way, and which serve to hold the body a or the entire device, with the exception of the bottom I), in said bottom.
Mounted centrally in the body a is a threaded' shaft f which, in the construction shown, is tubular in form, and the central bore of the shaft 7 is angular in form at the lower end thereof, and a pintle g which is also angular in form is secured in the bottom I) and fits in the lower end of the shaft f, and holds said shaft in position, and prevents its rotation, and the upper end of the shaft i closed by a plug h having a cap b and said shaft 1s provided with three spaced grooves 7 arranged longitudinally of said shaft and best shown in Fig. 3, and said groove f are V-shaped in form. The plug it prevents the passage of the contents of the device downwardly through the tubular shaft f as will be readily understood.
The supplemental bottom a is preferably in the form of a truncated cone and the diameter thereof is the same as the inner diameter of the body (1 and the supplemental bottom 0 is provided with a thread a which corresponds with the thread a in the body a and said supplemental bottom is provided with a central bore 0 through which the shaft f passes, and said bore, or the walls thereof, are threaded to correspond with the thread on the shaft f.

One end of the springs o enters the groove 0 and bears on the outer wall thereof, and other end of each of said springs operate in connection with the cam blocks is as shown at 0 and normally serve to force aid cam blocks outwardly, or into contact with the thread a of the body a and said cam blocks are provided with threads which correspond with the thread a in the body o The body a of the .device' may turn entirely around in the bottom I; but in the use of the device for deliverin or discharging a portion of the contents t ereof, the movement of said bod is onl an oscillatory movement, and in ig. 2, o the accompanying drawing, I have shown the cap d, or the skirt portion thereof, provided with a handle dtby which the operation of rotatin or oscillating the body a in the bottom may be accomplished.v
In the use of this device, the supplemental bottom 0 is connected with the lower end of the shaft 7, and with the bottom portion of on a' suitable support and held thereon against -movement by any suitable means. When it is desired to discharge a portion of the soap the handle 03' is manipulated to oscillate or rotate the container, or the body portion a thereof in opposite directions, in one of which movements the body portion and supplemental bottom rise together on the shaft f and in the other of which operations the supplemental bottom remains stationary on the shaft f by the pawls i engaging the grooves f in said shaft, while the body portion moves downwardly and in this last operation the contents of the body part is forced outwardly through the ports or passages e in the hopper 'e. If desired, a small amount of said contents may be discharged into the, hopper and water may be introduced into the. hopper and mingled therewith to obtain the desired solution to be used for cleaning purposes and, if desired, vmore of the contents may be introduced 'by again oscillating or rotating the body a and when the desired strength is attained the same may be discharged through the aperture 6 in the hopper e, and the dis charged contents in said hopper may be removed or discharged therefrom in any desired manner. v I
In the operation of oscillatin the body a to force the contents thereof t rough the ports or passages 0 the cam blocks is o erate as brake and friction devices in 't e movement of the body a and serve to hold the supplemental bottom a in connection to disengage them from the shaft 7 and hold them in such position in the operation of replacing the supplemental bottom 0 there on, or onthe lower end portion thereof. In the operation of the screws jto move the pawls outwardly as above described the pointed noses 7' of said screws operate in connection with the beveled recesses i of the pawls i, as hereinbefore stated. The above operations being performed after all of the contents of the device have been discharged and in placing the parts in position to permit the refilling of the device.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing, I have shown a modified form of discharge for the container, or the cap (1 thereof, which'consists of a plate member 39 secured to the neck por-- terial as it is discharged from the container a, and it will be understood that any form of discharge attachment may be connected with the cap (1 to suit the user, or the purpose for which the contents of the contamer is to be used, and it will be also understood that when grease and heavy oils are employedin connection therewith, suitable discharges will be used for the same, and other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificmg its advantages.
Having fully described my invention what I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, a base, an externally threaded shaft connected therewith centrally thereof. a tubular body part loosely connected with said base, a bottom connected with one end of said body part and movable therethrough in the direction of the other end and provided with a central threaded aperture through which said threaded shaft passes, said shaft being provided with grooves which extend the full length thereof, and pawls pivoted to said bottom and adapted to operate in connection with the grooves in said shaft to prevent the rotation of said bottom on said shaft in rotating the body in one direction, a closure cap connected with said last named end of the body part, and a discharge head connected with said cap.
2. In a device of the class described, a

and a discharge head connected with said cap.
3. In a device of the class described, a base provided centrally thereof with a threaded shaft, a tubular internally threaded body part loosely connected with said base, a bottom mounted on said threaded shaft and threaded to correspond with the thread in said. body part, said shaft being provided with grooves which extend the full length thereof, and means connected with said bottom and operating in connection with the grooves in said shaft for preventing the rotation of said bottom thereon, in rotating the body in one direction, a closure cap for said body part, a hopper connected with said closure cap, and means for oscillating the body part to move said bottom therethrough to force the contents of said body part into said hopper.

In a device of the class described, a base, a body part loosely connected with saidbase, a bottom connected with one end of said body part and movable therethrough in the direction of the other end, a central threaded shaft connected with the base and on which said bottom is mounted, said shaft being provided with a plurality of longitudinal grooves, and pawls connectedwith said bottom and adapted to operate in connection with the grooves in said shaft whereby in the rotation of the body part in one direction said bottom is held against rotation on said shaft.
5. In a device of the class described, a base, a bod part loosely connected with said base, a ottom connected with one end of said body part and movable therethrough in the direction of the other end, a central threaded shaft connected with the base and on which said bottom is mounted, said shaft being provided with a plurality of longitudinal grooves, pawls connected with said bottom and adapted to operate in connection with the grooves in said shaft whereby in the rotation of the body part in one direction said bottom is held against rotation on said shaft, and devices connected with ALEXANDER HORWITZ.
