To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LINNIE E. OS'IRANDER a citizen of the United States, reslding at Gold Beach, in the county of Curry and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Funnels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to funnels.
The object of the invention is to provide a funnel, which when a bottle or other receptacle is filled, may be closed, thus preventing the bottle being filled to overfiow- Another object is the provision of means for retaining any surplusage liquid in the funnel when it is transferred from one bottle to another. 7
A still further object is to improve a device of this nature by simplifying the construction, thus materially decreasing the cost of the same.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of such novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, shown in the drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the drawings, wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a central sectional view of the funnel inserted in a bottle. Fig. 2 isan enlarged detail View of a portion of the hollow cylindrical member.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a bottle of any make in general use, having a funnel 2 disposed therein. A lip 3 is formed upon the funnel and facilitates the pouring of liquids out of the funnel. The funnel 2'terminates in a shank portion 4, which shank 4 is provided upon its outer periphery with threads 5. A hollow cylindrical member 6, adapted to be inserted in the bottle, is connected to the shank L by means of threads on the inner surface of the upper end thereof. The cylindrical member 6 is provided with a plurality of perforations 7, and a cork -8 is disposed within said cylindrical member 6. An annular depression 9 is formed upon the member 6 near the upper end, and above the perforations 7 after the cork 8 has been placedin the shank 6. A rod 10 having a handle 11, is yieldably attached to the funnel 2 by means of small brackets 12. The rod 10 is bent so as to conform to the sliape of the funnel, and has its lower end 14 bent substantially at right angles. In operation, the
funnel is inserted into a bottle or the like, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the weight of the cork 8 keeps the same at the bottom of the cylindrical member 6. The liquid being poured into the funnel enters the member 6 and thence into the bottle 1 and through the perforations 7 The cork 8 being buoyant rises with the liquid, and when the bottle is filled the liquid rises to the height of the depression 9 and the cork 8 enters the depression 9, thereby shutting off the flow of liquid. The rod 10 is then slightly turned so that the angular end 14 will engage the lower end of the cork and securely hold it in place against the weight of any liquid which may be left in the funnel, when the funnel is changed to another bottle.
In practical fields, certain minor features of I construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessltate alterations to whlch the patentee 1s entitled, provided said alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
Having fully described the invention, what is claimed'as new and useful is:
A funnel having a perforated cylindrical shank removably secured thereto, the lower end of the shank being constructed to retain a cork within the shank, a conical depression formed in the upper portion of said shank to narrow the diameter at that point, a tapered cork movable small end upward in said shank as a float to automatically enter said depression upon a rise of water level about and in said shank, a rod slidably and revolubly mounted on the inner surface of said funnel to extend below said depression, and a hook portion formed on the extremity of said rod to permit the passage of the cork thereby and to be manually revolved and pulled in engaging and seating said cork in said depression.
