SYLVANUS B. HITT AND ROBERT W. CHAPMAN, OF WATERLOO, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HUBS FOR VEHICLE-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,955, dated April 23, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
Be it known that we, SYLVANUS B. HITT and ROBERT W. CHAPMAN, of the city of Waterloo, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Metallic Wagon-Hub and Spoke-Holder; and we do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the hub, hub-band, spoke-sockets, and the section of the spokes. Fig. 2 is an end view of the band and sockets. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the band and sockets. Fig. 4is a vertical section of the hub, band, sockets, and of a section of the spokes.
The invention consists in a metallic band so constructed that it can be shrunk tightly on a wooden hub, and having spoke-sockets in a staggering position; the spoke-sockets being connected at their bases separate, and projecting at their outer ends, and having shoulders on their inside at their bases. It consists, further, in the combination of this peculiar band with a mortised wooden hub and tenoned spokes, the spokes having shoulders adapted to the shoulders in the sockets.
' A represents the wooden hub; B, the metallic band; a, the connected bases of sockets;
a, the separate outer ends of the sockets; b, the spokes having tenons c and. shoulders c; and b, the shoulders in the sockets, the hubs being mortised to receive the spokes, as shown.
The band affords strength, durability, and protection to the hub and spokes, as well as neatness in appearance; and it is especially adapted to the formation of a straight wheel.
W'e claim as our invention- 1. A hub-band having staggering spokesockets, the sockets being connected at their bases and separate and projecting at their outer ends, and having shoulders on the inside, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A hub-band, constructed substantially as described and shown, and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of a hub, band, and spokes, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination of a band having the outer ends of the sockets separate and project ing, spokes having shoulders, and a mortised wooden hub, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
