HENRY E. RAGON, or NORTH LIBERTY, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEELS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,590, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom fit may concern:
Beit known that I, H. H. RAGON, of North Liberty, in the county of St. Joseph and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Hubs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation of the inner side of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on line x of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line z z of Fig. 2.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention is an improvement in a class of wheel-hubs constructed of or from metal; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the various portions of the de j vice, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A and A represent two circular disks of metal, having, preferably, the general shape shown, the inner faces of which are provided with suitable radial sockets or notches a, which correspond in'size and shape to the like features ,of the inner or tenoned ends of the spokes B; but transversely or in a line with the axle said notches have but half the dimensions of said spokes. Passing through the center of the disks4 A is an opening, which serves to contain a metal box, C, the inner end of said box being provided with a shoulder, o, which bea-rs against the contiguous face of the inner disk, while upon the outer projecting portion of said box is cut a screw-thread that receives a nut, D, and a cap, E.
lhe device is now complete, and is used as follows: Within the notches or mortises a of each disk are placed the required number of spokes, and said disks placed together with said spokes dodged, when, as the space between said mortise's is just equal to their width, it will be seen that the projecting halt' of each spoke ts into and exactly fills the space between two opposite spokes. If, now, the nut D is screwed inward so as to press the disks together, each spoke will be firmly compressed between the inner face of its mortise and the projecting portion of the opposite disk, and the whole so rmly held in place as to render the accidental movement of any part impracticable. If, after use, the shrinkage of the spokes should render them loose, a slight inward turn upon the bindingnut will at once confine them firmly in place.
The cap E not only serves as a shield for the outer ends of the box and axle, but also acts as ajam-nut, and insures the position of the bindlng-nut.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- The disks A provided with the half mortises a, the axle-box C provided with the shoulders c and with the screw-thread, the nut D, and the screw-cap E, when said parts are con structed as shown, and combined with each other and with the spokes B substantially as and for the purpose described.
'In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of June, 1872.
HENRY H. RAGON.
