Be it known thatl I, JOHN W. SLUT'rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in thevcounty of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Frames for Camping Purposes, of which the following is a specitication.

ll/ly object is to malte a knock-down frame which may be compactly packed for transportation and which may oe readily set up for camping purposes.. l

Figure l is a view in perspective of a knock-down frame embodying the principles of my invention.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan illustrating the bed frame with parts broken away to more clearly disclose the construction of the joints, and further indicating in dotted lines the manner in which the frame is folded.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10, 1l, 12 and legseach of which is here shown as formed of pieces which are rectangularl in section and are provided with hinge straps 14 by which they are pivotally secured at the opposite ends of end frame members 15 and 16. These frame members are also rectangular in section. Latch rods 17 are pivotally mounted to the outer faces of the end members and may be brought to engage the legs toV hold them in a position at right angles to the ends. Other similar latch rods 1S are pivotally mounted adjacent the ends of side frame members 19 and Q0 and hold the end and Side frame members and the legs in rigid relation to each other when assembled. The side frame members are positioned to overlap the end frames and are provided with latch levers 9.1 which have hooked outer ends adapted to engage latch staples 22 fastened upon the leg members and directly abovethe ends of the Specification of Letters Patent.

end members, as particularly shown in Fig. i?. This joint is otherwise held rigid pivot pins which extend through the ends of the side members and through holes 24 in the end members.

Canvas or metal covering be positioned upon or fastened to the side rails if desired.

To further brace 'the frame, an intermediate longitudinal frame member V25 is provided and overlaps the end frame members 15 and 16 where it will rest when the frame is assembled. A central leg member 26 is mounted upon a hinge 27 mid-way the length of the central frame member 25 and is supported by a folding brace member -28, as particularly shown in Fig. l. Y

rlhe upper outer corner of each of the leg members is cut away to form a vertical frame pocket 29 when the end'of each leg is bound by a pocket strap 30. The frame pockets are substantially square and are adapted to receive the lower ends of vvertical frame members 31, 32, 33 and rFliese members stand upwardly in spaced parallel relation to each other and are foldably connected with inclined members B5, 36, 2.7 and 3S, it being understood that one of these members is secured to each of the vertical frame members, as shown and indicated in Fig. 1. The contiguous Vends of the inclined and vertical frame members are beveled to bear against each other and are foldably held by hinge braces 89 which may swingv along the outer faces of the members when they are folded together. The upper ends of the inclined members are beveled and bear against each other where they are held by hinges 40 and 41. Straps 42 and are secured at the opposite ends of a pole 44 and hold it upon the members. rEhe tent structure is further braced by longitudinally eX- tending brace poles 45 and 46 which are formed with removable dowel pins adapted to extend into the vertical frame members and adjacent the upper ends thereof where they are held by catches 47 which will secure the end frame-work to the ends of the poles.

lt will be understoctifxt a. suitable canvas covering 48 is pixded and may be placed over the frame thus constructed. The entire covering is cut from one piece of material and forms a roof and end portions as well as side flaps 49 and 5() which may be swung outwardly and suitably supported to provide shelter at opposite sides of the bed.

Side curtains may be provided to form rooms Inoperation, it will be assumed that. theframe is in its assembled position and that it is desired to disassemble it and fold it into a compact bundle, in which case the canvas is first removed from the frame and folded as desired. The pole 44 is then removed from the top of the frame, after which the catches 47 are released and the end frame structures sprung to allow the side poles 45 and 46 to be removed from between the end frames. rlhe inclined members are then swung downwardly in the direction of the arrows -ain Fig. 1 and disposed alongside the Vertical frame members 31-34 inclusive. These members are then withdrawn from their sockets. The base frame is then disassembled by swinging the latch rods 17 and 18 out of engagement. with the legs, thus permitting the legs to be swung under the end members 15 and 16 in the direction of the arrows -b-. This cannot be accomplished, however, until the latches 21 have been disengaged from the staples 22. When .this is accomplished, one end of side frame member 19 will be loosened from the adjacent end of the end member 16, and the opposite end of the side frame member 20 will be loosened from the adjacent vend of the end member 15. The end members and the main frame will be separated in two parts, each part composing two legs, an end, and a side frame member although connected by said canvas. rl`he connected ends of each of these parts are held by the pivot pins 28 which allow the ends to swing around in the directions of arrows -cin Fig. 2 and assume positions beneath the side members, as particularly indicated in Fig. 3. This completes the operation and the various membersmay then be gathered and wrapped within the canvas. Suitable pockets are provided upon the canvas within which thelegs seat, it being understood that no stakes are required.

It will thus be seen that the structure here disclosed affords a knoclrdown frame which may be placed in a compact bundle and may be readily and conveniently assembled when desired.

While I have shown the preferred construction of my knock-down frame as now ,known to me, it will be understood that various changes in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.

1. lIn a knock-down frame, frame members, supporting legs pivotally connected to the end frame members so as to fold from upright positions to parallel positions, side frame members resting upon the end frame members, an intermediate frame member resting upon the end frame members, a central leg hinged to the intermediate frame member intermediate of its ends, and a folding brace connecting the leg to the intermediate fra me member to hold the leg upright and so that the leg may be folded.
