Description

B. F. SEYMOUR.
FENCE POST.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 12. 1911.
.4 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar,
WITNESSES nn rr BYB.O N I r. SEYMOUR; or AME-S, rows;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar.12, rare.
Application filed .Tune 12, 1917. Serial No. 174,285.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON F. SEYMOUR,
a citizen of the United States,-residing at Ames, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved fence post of the cement type and the principal object of the invention is to provide a fence post having an improved type of reinforcing element serving as staple carrying means thus permitting fence wires to be connected with the post by means of staples, the reinforcements including means for bending the staples to a locking position.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this reinforcement that when desired, the staples may be removed and new ones put in place.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this reinforcement that it may be securely held in the cement body of the post.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the improved post in elevation Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View through the post taken along the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4c is a view similar to Fig. 3 taken along the line 1-4 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 5 is a view showing the upper end portion of the reinforcement in side elevation, and
Fig. 6 is a view showing the upper end portion of the reinforcement in rear elevation.
This post is provided with a cement body 10 and is triangular in cross section as will be seen from an inspection of Figs. 3 and 4:. Prior to the molding of the cement body, the reinforcing element will be put in place and will extend as shown in the drawing thus bracing the body. It is of course understood that if desired, additional bracing means may be provided.
This reinforcing element is formed from a strip of sheet metal bent to provide side arms or sections 11 and is provided with openings 12 and 13 which permit the cement to pass through the reinforcement thus providing secure anchoring means for the reinforcement. It has been stated that the reinforcement will be formed of sheet metal but it is to be understood that if so desired this reinforcement may be casted instead of being formed of sheet metal stamped and bent to assume the proper shape.
In order to connect the wires 14: with the post by means of staples 15 there has been provided a backing strip or anvil 16 secured by bolts or other fasteners 17 and extending longitudinally of the reinforcementacross each of the openings 18. It is of course understood that a separate strip will be provided to extend across each opening 18. Each of these backing strips will be provided with grooves 19 leading from the ends and terminating in spaced relation at the upper and lower edge portions of the openings 18 thus providing pockets into which the arms of the staples 15 will be driven when connecting the wires. fter the wires have been put in place and stretched tight, the
staples will be placed with their'arms straddling the wires and upon being driven with a hammer or driving implement, the arms will be forced into the grooves or pockets 19 thus spreading the arms asshown in Fig. 2 and causing the wires to be securely held in place. This spreading action further serves to prevent the staples from slipping loose. If it is desired to remove the wires or to tighten them, the staples can be pulled out with a pair of pliers or with any other suitable implement and after the wires have been again tightened, the new staples can be put in place. It has been found in practice that it is easier to remove these staples if they are first cut and it is to be understood that if so desired this can be done.
What is claimed is 1. A fence post comprising a plastic body, a reinforcing plate in said plastic body substantially V-shaped in cross section and provided with cutouts at the junction of its side sections, and backing plates connected with the reinforcing plate and extending across the cutouts and provided with longitudinally extending grooves leading from the upper and lower end portions of the cutouts and providing staple receiving pockets.
2. A fence post comprising a plastic body, a plate extending longitudinally of the body and bent to provide a reinforcing element of the plate for the body and provided with cutouts at points intermediate its length, and backing strips extending across the cutouts of the reinforcing plate and provided with groovesleading from theedge portions of the cutouts to provide staple receiving pockets.
