Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, JOHN C. B. WOOD and KnNNrs F. DESKINS, citizens of the United States, residing at Logan, in the county of Logan and State of Test Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fence posts, more particularly to fence posts constructed of concrete or like material, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efiiciency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fence post formed of concrete and having means for clamping the members constituting the fence structure thereto and to readily separate the fence members therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device whereby the fence members may be strained and stretched by the operation of the attaching means.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device whereby the fence material may be attached to either side of the post or to both sides, or with the fence material which extends in one direction attached to the post at one side and the fence material which extends in the opposite direction attached to the post at the opposite side.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device whereby any of the ordinary fence materials, such as wires either barbed or unbarbed, woven wire or like fence material, may be employed without change in the construction of the post or its attaching means.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a front elevation of one of the improved posts; Fig. 2 is a transverse section with the strand wires in position thereon; Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views from opposite sides of one of the clamping in size.

The improved post is formed of concrete of any suitable composition or compound and comprises a base portion 10 designed to be embedded in the ground represented at 11, and an upper portion 12 above the ground, the latter being preferably reduced The upper portion 12 of the post is formed with longitudinal transverse recesses 13 extending entirely through the post and with the inner faces of the recesses inclined or angular as represented at 11. The angular portions 1 1 will preferably be arranged at both sides of the post as shown in Fig. 2. By arranging the angular faces 14: upon both sides of the post the fence material may be attached from both sides as represented in Fig. 2, as hereafter more fully explained.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, the inclined faces of the recesses and the outer contiguous faces of the post are provided with wire-receiving recesses or depressions 15. Preferably two or more of the recesses 13 are employed in each post and separated by an integral partition 16, to increase the strength of the post. Bearing in each of the recesses 13-4 1 is a clamp block 17 and perforated to receive a clamp bolt 18. By reference to Fig. 2, it will be noted that two of the blocks 17 are employed with each clamp bolt and extending through both blocks. The depressions or cavities 15 will correspond in position with the location of the strand wires of the fence, and are designed to receive such strand wires which are thus clamped in position by the blocks 17, and effectually held from movement either vertically or longitudinally. The depressions 15 effectually prevent any vertical movement of the strand wires upon the post, while the strong grip produced by the action of the angular blocks 17 effectually prevents any longitudinal movement of the strand wires.
In applying the strand wires to the post they are first stretched across the face of the post and in the portions of the depressions which are located in the face of the post, and then when the blocks 17 are located over the strand wires opposite the recesses 13, and strain applied through the action of the clamp bolts 18, the wires will be depressed into the recesses and effectually stretchedand strained longitudinally as will be obvious. Thus when the improved post and its clamping means is employed it will not be necessary to employ any other stretching implement.
The base portions of the post are also provided with recesses 21 to receive the toe portion of a lifting lever to assist in removing the post from the ground when required. The post will also preferably be provided with reinforcing rods or wires 22 which are embedded in the post when molded, as represented in Fig. 5. The reinforcing wire will preferably be elongated U-shaped'and extended through the body of the post at each side of the recesses 13 and within the post material above the recesses, as shown.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A post formed with a plurality of slots extending transversely therethrough with the outer portions of the sides of the slots diverging in opposite directions toward the side faces of the post, a block engaging in each of the diverging portions of each slot and having beveled sides conforming to the diverging faces of the slots, and clamping means operating through each opposite pair of the blocks, said blocks being adapted to compress fence members into the slots and apply strain thereto.
