Description

.wrt-UAM H. MILES.
Improvement in Detachng-Hook for Boats.
vPatented Aprn23,1872.
Un'rrn WILLIAM H. MILES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGN OR TO LOUIS WALTON, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DETACHING-HOOKS FOR BOATS.
y Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,900, dated April 23,1872.
I, WlLLmM HMILEs, ofthe city and county o f Philadelphia, State ot' Pennsylvania, have in vented certain Improvements in Davit-Hook.
The nature of my invention relates to a davit-hook which may be self-releasing or not, at option.
Figure l, davit-hookwith tongue in position as when supporting boat; Fig. 2, davit-hook with tongue disengaged; Figs. 3 and 4, views ot' section at right angles with each other.
In all, A is body of hook. A' is chamber in A. B is tongue ot' hook. B' is lug in base of tongue B. b is pivot. on which tongue turns. O is bolt inserted in chamber in A. G' is chamber in C to hold c. c is spring inserted in chamber C. D is thumb-screw on key for pressing C downward. D' is pin projecting from D. cl is slot in key D. d' is nut used for holding D in place. E is catch attached to upper part of A. e is spring to press catch E against tongue B. F is ring attached to upper part of A by screw F'. F' is screw used for connecting ring F with A. G and G' are, respectively, lower and upper holes in A. H is seat on which lower end ot' spring C rests.
Y I make the body of the hookAsubstantially of the shape represented in the drawing, and with a chamber, A'. I then make a tongue, B, substantially as represented (the base of the tongue being nearly circular) with lug B', and also make the bolt O with chamber O'. In
the upper end of the chamber :is placed a.
tion and the pivot on which it turns is iuserted. Through the opening in A, made for the purpose, 'the key D constructed as represented in the drawing is inserted, and the hook is ready for use.
Vhen the key is turned so as that the slot d may be on the lowerside, the spring C forces the bolt O upward and leaves the tongue to turn. The tongueis then placed in the position represented in Fig. l, and the key turned half round, thus pressing the bolt against the face of the lug B', thus making it impossible for the tongue B to fall.
The hook being suspended from the dar-'it by a rope passing through ring F, the boat may be suspended from it. Should it be desired to make the hook self-releasin g while the boat is suspended, the key may be turned half around, and kept in that position by pressing pin D into holes G, so long as aweight is suspended from the hook the pressure of lug B' against bolt C prevents the latter from withdrawing. As soon as the weight is removed by the boat being buoyed up by the water, the pressure against the bolt is relieved, and the spring forcesthe bolt upward and the tongue B falls.
To prevent any accident from forcing the ring attached to the weight over the tongue B, I lattach to the upper part of the body A the spring-catch E, which presses against the tongue B. The same result may be secured by making the inward curve of the tongue so great as to bring it against or near the body A.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The davt-hook composed ofthe bodyA with chamber A' and seat H, the tongue B with lug B', bolt'O with chamber O' and spring c, key D with slot cl, and pin D' with corresponding holes G and G', and the ring F and screw F', all combined substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
