which the following is a specification.

In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 10, the sofa bed comprises a frame 1 having ends 2 and cross members 3, a foldable seclal'bed bottom 4, ascat 5, a. back 6, and

a swinging top or cover 7.

The bed bottom includes mainly a foot or back section 11, a seat section 12, a short connecting section 13, and'a bottom section 14, and preferably a. fifth or head section 15 is also. provided. i

The back s'ection'll is provided'with arms 17 projecting forwardly and downwardly and supported turnably adjacent to the? lower front part of theframe for swinging said section forwardly and downwardly to its bedposition. The lower ends of the arms 17 may be held in any turnable manner, but

The seat 5 is mounted for overturning in converting the device from one form to the other. Its rear part is attached to the seat section 12, and its front part is supported on the front part of the frame 1. The seat is provided with horizontal lateral guides 23, and the frame has shoulders or pivot like studs 24, to engage said guides for supforward part slidably as the seat is turned through a somersaulting motion in swinging to and from its inverted or bed position.

The seat section is preferably shorter than the depth of the seat proper, but these relative dlmensions may be varied widely ac cording to particular requirements in different cases.

The head section 15 is mounted turnably withrelation to the frame, adjacent to its .rear edge, as on pivots 26, one on each side. When such a fifth or head section is used,

it-serves also as means for raising the rear part of the bottom section 14 to its bed position.

Rule joints, or the equivalents, are preferably provided at both ends of the short section 13, though when arranged precisely as in Fig. 2, the joints may all be free. .As the back section 11 swings into bed position it pulls the rearward sections up into alinement. This lifting of the intermediate sections is made further 'eifective by having the pivots 26 ofl'set upward from section 15 as by a bracket 29..

Coasting support means the frame and bed bottom, to secure the ad jacent parts of the head and bottom sections 15 and 14 in raised position; A guide or stop 31 on each frame end 2, and a shoulder 32 on each side of the head section answer this purpose.

Each ivot 26 is preferably carried demountab y inv a lateral .fraine supported bearing member 35 having an open topped socket 36. Said member 35 slidable horizontally somewhat, as on a. guide 37, and provided with retracting means, as for instance a spring 38 con nected to the support 35 at 39 and to the frame end 2 at 40. Support 35 is held by, means 43 reciprocatable in slots 44 in the guide 37. The back 6 is attached to the foot section 11 in such manner as to swing downward somewhat therefrom -in its bed position, enough to give ample clearance for the usual woven-wire bed spring, and also so as to operate certain legs as hereinafter described. For this purpose links 48 are provided at opposite edges of the back, each of said links being turnably connected at its end to the back and foot section respectively. Preferably one end of each link is pivoted to the upper part of the back, and the opposite end to the lower or inner part of the foot section. A bracket 50 may to advantage be provided. on the foot section 11 for sup porting the lower pivot 51 of said link spaced forward somewhat from said sec tion. By this arrangement the relative longitudinal movement of theback and foot section in swinging is reduced to a minimum. The outward or divergent swing of the back, with respect to the foot section, is limited by suitable means, as for instance a flexible strap 53 at the lower edge of the back, and a-plate 54 at the upper edge of the back as hereinafter more fully described.

F oldable legs 57 are provided on or adjacent to the outer end of the foot section 11. Said legs are preferably attached to the foot rail 58 as by the pivots 59 shown in movement of the back with relation to the foot section is utilized. The upper means 54. for limiting the divergent swing of the back from the foot rail may be formed and arranged to control the legs, and for this purpose said means 54 is preferably made in the form of a plate. Said plate has slots 61 for guiding studs 62 carried by the angled upper ends of the legs as on the short arms 63, and also slots 65 shoulders 67 on the foot rail. The leg con trolling slots are dis osed longitudinally, and the slots for the foot rail studs are plate. The plate 54 is preferably connected turnably to the back, as by hinges 69 so as to vide for more or the bed bottom such as recoacting with studs 01' prosults from the swinging arrangement of the back above described. The legs are formed to overlap, one with respect to the other, in folding, so as to lie compactly against the guide plate 54-, opposite the foot rail 58 when the foot section is swung to its sofa position.

In folding the device, the operation is as follows: The operator grasps the handle 78, or the free end of the foot section and swings the same upwardly and backwardl'y to its sofa position, thereby 'causing the bed sections to assume their position as shown in Fig. '1 with the mattress and beddin'glih made-up form, as-will be understood. Gravity swings the back'fi against the foot section 11 and thereby folds legs 57. This'restoring action may be assisted or hastened by-a push with the. hand.

In the construction shown in Figs. 11 to 17 the legs 90 for the foot section 91' are operated by connections leading therefrom to the seat section 92, whereby relative turning of the foot and seat sections effects a. corresponding definite swinging of the. legs.

I claim 1. A device of the class described, comprising a frame, and movable seat and back members, in combination with a foldable bed bottom including a back section, a seat section, a connecting section, a bottom sec tion, and ahead section arranged in the order enumerated, said SECllOIlS being fold able to provide a space for bedding 1n place on-said bed bottom, said back section having an arm whereon it maybe swung forward from its upright normal position to its bed position about an axis in the lower front art of said frame, and said head section eing turnably mounted ad accnt to its rear edge on said frame.

In a device of the class described, a frame, in combination with a foldable bed bottom including a back section and a seat section, said back section having an arm Whereon it is swingable from its back position to back member disposed normally in front of and being mounted to permit of swinging said back section forward, and a its rear part attached to said seat section, frame at their front parts being formed to coaet slidably for forward and downward movement of said seat member in overturning to its sofa position.

In a sofa bed, a frame, a foldable sectional bed bottom mounted operatively thereon and a back mounted in variable spaced relation on one of the bed bottom sections for control by gravity, a member attached to the back and having restricted coaction with said section to serve as stop means for limiting the divergence of said section and back when the device is unfolded, and legs turnably connected directly to its sofa position and reversely, a-

seat member having said section for directly sup ort-ing the bed bottom, said legs and mem er being provided with coacting shoulder and guide means adapted to project and retract said legs as the back moves when the device unfolds and folds respectively.

5. A convertible seating device comprising a tnrnably mounted bed bottom member disposed normally in upright position and being swingable to horizontal position, a back mounted on said member in movable relation thereto in a direction nearly .per-

A convertible seating device, comprising a frame, a foldable sectional bed bottom, an, overturning seat arranged to swing forward under the bed bottom, said bed bottom including an outer section having arms turnably connected to the lower front part of said frame whereby said section is swingable from an upright position in the back of said. frame to a horizontal position wholly in front of and spaced from said frame, an inner section turnably connected to the back part of said frame, and a plurality of medial sections disposed normally under the seat and one of which is disposed adjacent to and is co-turnable with the seat.

' 8. A device of the class described, comprisin a sofa frame, a movable back and movab e seat, in combination with a foldable bed bottom including a foot section, a head section, a middle section, a seat section,

and another section adjacent to the head section, a supporting arm attached to said foot section and having turning relation to and being supported by the lower forward part of said frame, the said seat section being adjacent to the' foot section and being attached to the under side of the seat, "said head section being supported turnably adjacent to its rearedge on said frame, said sofa frame and seat having. slid ably related supporting means having a point of coaction adjacent the front edge of the sofa frame whereby said seat is overturnable by the forward movement of the foot section in unfolding the device.

9 A sofa bed, comprising a frame and a -seat overturnably mounted for swinging forward to its bed position, in combination with a 'foldable sectional bed bottom having a section secured. to the under side of. said seat, a pivotal support adjacent to the front of said frame, guide meanscoacting with said support on'the side of said seat, and an arm connected turnably at one end to the lower front part of said frame and at its opposite end turnably to the rear part of saidsection as it appears in its sofa position.

A sofa bed, comprising a frame, and a seat ovcrturnably mounted for swinging forward to its bed position, in combination with a foldablo sectional bed bottom having a section secured to the under side of said seat, a pivotal support adjacent to the frontof said frame, guide means coacting with said support on the side of said seat, and an arm connected turnably at oneend to the lower front part of said frame and at its opposite end tnrnably to the rear part of said section asit appears in its sofa posi' tion, said arm in one of its positions being disposed at a distance from said support, and in another of its positions being disposedadjaccnt to said support and being curved to reach around said support.

A sofa bed comprising a frame havingan inwardly projecting shoulder on its front part, a seat having a lateral guide to coact with said shoulder. an arm turnably connected at its ends with'the lower front part ofsaid frame and. with the. rear part of said seat respectively, a front panel swing ably mounted adjacent to its lower edge, at the lower front part of said frame, said panel being disposed in front of said armand swingable forwardly and downwardly in converting the device to its sofa form,- said arm being bent to extend around said shoulder in one of its positions.

16. A sofa bed having a frame, in combination with a foldable sectional bed bottom, the sections of which when folded form a storage receptacle adapted to hold the bedding in made-up form on the bed bot-tom,

two adjacent sections at one end being back and seat sections respectively, means connecting the seat section to said frame inturning and sliding relation thereto, and the back section having arms projecting downwardly and forwardly in turnable relation to said frame for swingin'g said back section forwardly and downwardly to its bed position;

In a sofa bed, an overturning seat supported turnably and slidably adjacent to its front edge, means for supporting the rear part of said seat as it swings upward and forward to an inverted position, and a so'riesof bed sect-ions movable into alinement in a plane above said seat by the swinging of said seat, one of sald sections being attached to the under side of said seat and said sections being foldable to form a clothes receptacle under the seat.-

27. A convertible seating device, comprising a frame and movable seat and back members, in combination with a foldable bed-bottoniiulapted to carry the bedding in made-up form when folded and including a back section, a seat section, a connecting section, and a bottom section, and a pair of arms for said back section Whereon it may be swung forward to its bed position and vice versa, said seat being swingable for- Ward under the bed bottom when the device is unfolded, and said back section being disposed normally in upright position behind said back member.

28. In combination with a fixed frame, a folding frame comprising five sections, the first or innermost section pivoted to the fixed frame at the rear at substantially bed height; the fifth or outermost section fulcrumcd on the fixed frame at the forward side near the floor level and having its outer end portion horizontal at extended position, the second section being pivoted to the free end of the first, the fourth pivoted tothe horiztmtal portion ofthe outermost section, the middle section being pivoted at its opposite ends to the proximate ends of the second and fourth sections, the joint between the second and third sections being at the extended position of the bed frame located substantially vertically above the fulcrum of the outermost section to the fixed frame.

3C In a. folding bed lounge, in combination with afixed seat frame, a folding bed frame comprising five sections,the first three joints being constructed for folding only in the direction which would causejthem to more downward from the horizontally-extended position of the frame, the fourth joint being adapted also to fold in the opposite direction, supports on the fixed frame upholding the first and second joints at-the horizontally-extended position of the frame, the first section having limited longitudinal movement at its'pivotal connection with the fixed frame, the fifth section being fulcrumcd on the lower part of the forward side of said fixed frame.
