The present invention is in the nature of an improvement upon the sofa-bed described in my pending application 166,386, filed February 7, 1927; and the primary object is to provide a more simple and staunch construction of sofa-bed of this character which can be manufactured at moderate cost.

In accordance with the present invention,

the end-members of the rear bed-section have rigidly secured thereto, in spaced relation to their outer sides, bars provided with slots which are engaged by studs with which the intermediate portions of the lever which carry the bed-sections are equipped.

The front pair of levers differ in shape from the rear pair of levers; and the studs with which the levers are equipped at their elbow portions engage the slots with which the barssecuredto the end-members of the rear bed-section are provided. The front s'lots are on a lower plane than the rear slots; and the construction and arrangement are such that the bed sections will be given a tilting .movement, followed by a leveling movement during conversion of the structure from sofa-form to bed-form and vice versa. The relative 'movements of the two bed-sections are so regulated through the medium of the connections as to insure clearance between the rear lower corner of the front bed-section and the upper front cornerof the mattress, or-bedding, in the opening and closing movements of the structure.

The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a broken vertical sectional view of the improved sofa-bed in partially open condition; Fig. 2, a similar view of the structure in folded condition; Fig. 8, a similar view 'of the structure in the fully extended condition; Fig. ha broken plan sectional view; Fig. 5, a view similar to Fig. 3, the

The bracket plates B are rigidly secured frame, as by means of screws 15; and the mounting-plates B are equipped with studs 16 which engage slots, or sockets, 16 with which the bracketplates are provided. The mounting-plates are additionally secured to the main frame by means of screws 17.

As may be seen from Fig- 1, for example, the short arms of the front bell-crank levers are of less length than the short arms of the rear bell-crank levers; also, the short arms of the front bell-crank levers are nonparallel with the short arms of the rear bellcrank levers. In other words, the front pair of short arms are at an angle with respect to the rear pair of short arms.

The studs 5 and 6 whi h project inwardly from the elbow portions of the levers are slidably connected with bracket-bars18, as will be best understood from Figs. 4 and 68. The bars '18 are rigidly secured to the end-members 19 tothe rear bed-sections by means of rivets 20, spacers 21 being interposed. The studs 5 and 6 carried by the elbow portions of the levers slidably engage slots 22 and 23 with which the bracket-bars 18 are provided. It will be noted from Fig. 8 that the rear slots 23 are disposed in a higher planethan the front slots 22, so that when the structure is in the extended condition, the rear bed-section will be supported in a horizontal posltlon, regardless of the fact that the short arms of the front levers are shorter than the short arms of the rear levers. The slots 22 and23 are so disposed that the studs 5 and 6 engage the rear ends of the front slots and the front ends of the rear slots in the manner shown in Fig. 8 when the structure is in extended condition. In this condition, the short arms of the levers are so positioned as to mutually embrace each other. v I

The pivotal connections land the mounting-bars B are formed at the ends of a rigid metal bar 1, as will be understood from Figs. &, 6 and 8. The bar is of square cross-' section and extends through angular openings with which the lower ends of the levers C are provided; and the extremities of the bar are rounded and pass through circular perforations in the mounting-bars and riveted, as shown in Fig. 6, thus serving as pivots for the levers. The bar 1 rigidly connects the front pair of levers, so that they will turn as a unit,

It will be noted from Figs. 6 and 8 that the studs 5 carried by the elbow portions of the front levers C afford stops on which the long arms of the rear levers rest when thestructure is in extended condition.

As appears from Figs. :2 and 3, the extremities of the short arms of the rear levers are provided with laterally turned portions 24: which afford stops engaged by the long arms of the front levers when the structure is in folded condition. I

It appears from Fig. 1 that the rear bedsection assumes a tilting position when the structure is in an intermediate position in the unfolding operation. In fact, it will be understood that the connections between the levers and the rear bed-section are such as to carry the rear bed-section by an undulatory movement, the bed-section assuming a horizontal position in the folded condition ofthe structure and also in the fully extended condition of the structure.

The construction described is simple, durable, and of a character to enable the device to be easily manufactured.

It is preferred to equip the end-members of the rear bed-section with the slotted bracket-plates 18, but the rear bed-section may be provided with guide-slots for the studs 5 and 6 in any desired manner.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.

W hat I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V

1. In a sofa-bed: a main frame; a front pair of bent levers and a rear pair of bent levers adjacent the ends of said frame each of said levers composed of a long and a short arm and having its short arm pivoted to the frame, said levers being equipped at their elbow portions with studs; a'rear bedsection equipped at its ends with slots slidably engaged by said studs; and a front bed-section mounted on the extremities of the long arms of said levers the short arms of the front levers bein of less length than the short arms of the rear levers, whereby said bed-sections will be disposed at an angle with relation to each other when the structure is in intermediate position between the extended and folded positions.

2. A structure of the character set forth in claim 1, in which the end-portions of the rear bed-section are provided in one plane with front slots which engage the studs carried by the elbow portions of the front levers and are provided in a higher plane with rear slots which engage the studs :arried by the elbow portions of the rear levers and the short arms of the front levers are disposed at an angle with relation to the short arms of the rear levers.

In a sofa-bed: a main frame; a front pair of bent levers and a rear pair of bent levers adjacent the ends of said frame each of said levers composed of a long and a short arm and having its short arm pivoted to the frame the elbow portions of said levers being equipped with studs; a rear bed-section having its end-members equipped with brackets provided with front and rear slots slidably engaging said studs, the short arms of the front levers being shorter than and at an angle to the short arms of the rear levers; and a front bed-section mounted on the long arms of said levers.

i. A sofa-bed construction of the character set forth in claim 3, characterized by the studs carried by the elbow portions of the front levers and slidably engaging the front slots serving as stops for the long arms of the rear levers in the extended condition of the structure.

5. A sofa bed construction of the character set forth in claim 3, in Which the eX- treniities of the short arms of the rear levers are provided with stops for engaging the long arms of the front levers When the structure is in folded condition.
