UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES B. WORCESTER, 0F RIVERSIDE, GALIFORNIA.
WHISTLE.
Application filed June 20, 1917.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES B. lVoRcnsrun, a citizen of the United States. residing at Riverside, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented new and usefulImprovements in lfhistl s, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in whistles, and more particularly to whistles employed for signaling for one purpose or another, by traffic oflicers, watchmen, patrolmen, gang fore-men, game referees, hunters and other persons employed in other voca tions or occupations, to whom it is impera tive or of high advantage or benefit that audible signals be rendered promptly upon the arising of the necessity, cause or demand therefor. Ordinarily. such whistles a re accommodated in a coat or vest pocket of the user, or suspended from a chain or cord, which in any case requires that the whistle be first found or locates and then seized upon by the user, n'eparatory to bringing the same to the lips so that the signal may be sounded. In accordance with the present invention, I provide improvements in whistles comprising a whistle body which is provided with signal-producing members and a. suitably directed or located member to which the lips of the user are to be applied, to sound the signal, and with means or a member or members suitably organi ed for securing the entirety in connection with the hand, wrist or arm of the user, so that the entire whistle improvements may be brought into position for use by the quick movement incident to merely raising the hand. wrist or arm so that the member to which the lips are applied is brought almost instan aneously, and with the certitude with. which the muscular sense is effective, into juXtaposition for application. of the lips so that the signal may be sounded. In the preferred form, the means for mounting the entirety to the ends last mentioned comprises a band or strap or straps adapted to be passed about and secured in connection with the Wrist; and the member to which the lips of the user are applied is suitably directed in such angular relation to the Whistle body as to permit the latter to lie fiat upon the back of the wrist, while such former member is presented in position for direct application of the lips when the Whistle is naturally and simply elevated in the upward swing of the arm and wrist.

invention that a signal may be given almost instantaneously by the user of such improve ments in whistles, and this is often of the highest importance, as in. the performance of the duties of rafiic officers in congested city streets, when vehicles are to be halted.-
moved or recalled with the utmost precision and promptncss, and in many games in which play is to be instam'aneousl terminated. or suspended. such as football. basketball and similar games. The positioning of the whistle upon the arm, hand or wrist, or its connection to any article of wearing apparel thereon, leaves the hand cntirel free for other uses. in addition to eliminating the necessity of finding, reaching for and grasping the whistle preparatory to naling.
The invention has for its object the provision of improvements in whistles gene rally organized in accordance with the characteristics and features above enumerated. and which will be generally superior in point of efiiciency, convenience in operation and use, durability, neatness in appearance, and novelty in mode of use. and which will be generally superior in serviceability and adaptability to various conditions of service.
The invention consists in the novel and useful provision. formation. combination, association and inter-relation and construction and mode of use of parts. members and features, all as hereinafter described. shown in the drawing. and finally pointed out in claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of improvements in whistles formed and constructed and organized to embody the invention 2 Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal transverse sectional view of the same. taken upon the line a2 w Fig. 3, and looking in the direction of the appended arrows;
Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal vertical sec tion of the same taken upon the line 09 *.0, Fig. 2; and,
Fig. 4-. is a detail transverse vertical sectional View of the same, taken upon the line z a:*, Fig. 3, and looking in the direction of the appended arrows.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are designated by the same reference characters.
Referring with particularity to the drawing, the improvements in whistles therein disclosed comprise a whistle body 5, which is shown to be elongated and hollow to include an chamber 6, the body being pro vided at its top with an opening 7 producing a thin edge 8 upon which impinges air directed against the same from a blow chamber 9, through a slot or port 10 disposed in opposition to such thin edge 8;-such blow chamber 9 being provided between one end portion of the body 5 and an upwardly and angularly directed lip piece 11 the open orifice 12 of which is presented conveniently for application of the lips of the user, so that the user may blow into an d through the blow chamber 9 and the port 10 and set into vibration the air in the air chamber 6 and cause the thin edge 8 to vibrate and produce a sound the nature, pitch and intensity of which are dependent upon the formation, dimensions and inter-relations of the several features of the whistle constructon just described, and the air pressure produced in the blow chamber 9; all in accordance with the predetermination or choice, and not being concerned in the particular aspects of the present invention. 13 designates a keeper provided upon and beneath the whistle body 5, and extending lengthwise thereof, and through which may be passed a wrist band 14L having strap ends 1.5 adapted to be brought together beneath or inward of the wrist and held together by buckles 16. By such means, namely, such keeper, band and strap ends and buckles, which together constitute attaching means for the entire whistle improvements, the whistle body may readily be held in position upon and ranging lengthwise of the back of the wrist, so that the lip piece 11 may readily be brought to the lips, almost instantaneously, and due to its upward inclination, may be so presented to the lips as to render most effective the application of the lips thereto, so that the user may create an air pressure in the blow chamber 9 and sound the signal in the manner above described.
It is manifest that many changes may be made with respect to the nature, kind, construction, forn'iation, inter-relation and association of parts, members and features, in adapting the invention to various conditions of use and service, without departing from the spirit of the invention and a fair interpretation thereof.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. Improvements in whistles, comprising a body provided with signal-producing means, and with means for securing the entirety upon the person of the user so that the entirety may be raised by elevation ot the arm into position for use.
2. Improvements in whistles, comprising a body provided with signal-producing means, and with means for securing the entirety upon the person of the user so that the entirety may be raised by elevation of the arm into position for use; said signalproducing means including a lip piece directed angularly with relation to the major portion of the whistle body.
3. Improvements in whistles, comprising a body provided with. signalproducing n'ieans, and with means for securing the en tirety upon the person of the user so that the entirety may be raised by elevation of the arm into position for use; said securing means comprising a member adapted to be passed about and secured in connection with the wrist of the user whereby the whistle body may be positioned at the back of the wrist.
l. Improvements in whistles, comprising a body provided with signal-producing means, and with means for securing the en tirety upon the person of the user so that the entirety may be raised by elevation of the arm into position for use; said signalproducing means including a lip piece directed angularly with relation to the major portion of the whistle body; said securing means comprising a member adapted to be passed about and secured in connection with the wrist of the user whereby the whistle body may be positioned at the back of the wrist.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
