ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM H. FINN AND JAMES PAPPA, OF OSVEGO, NEW YORK.
FlRE-ARMOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,131, dated February 10,. 1891.
Application filed February 27, 1890. Serial No. 342,011. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. FINN and JAMES PAPPA, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoke or Noxious-Gas Protectors, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to improvements in fire-armor, and especially that class to be used by firemen compelled to enter buildings filled with smoke or other obnoxious fumes or gases.
Our object is to produce an armor which combines the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and specifically set forth. in the claim hereto anne'ved. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the armor complete as it appears and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a front view of the jacket.
A is the jacket, constructed of any material desired, and B is the head-piece, constructed of any shape or form desired, and may or may not be provided with a visor, as shown. On the front side of the head-piece B we construct a small window 1, which may or may not be hinged, and just below it we construct a valve or opening 2. This valve may be constructed in any form desired, so that it may lie readily opened or shut at the will of the person wearing the armor.
O is a flexible tube secured either to the belt or about the armor, the lower end connecting with an air-pump outside of the building and the upper end passing Within the armor and terminating at a point near the head, through which we force fresh air into the armor, the foul air being allowed to escape through the valve 2.
3 and at are tubes connecting with the main tube C, each of which is provided with a mask substantially similar to the head-piece B, and are either attached to the belt or held in the pockets in the armor provided for that purpose and are placed over the head of the persons who may be found in a sulfocating condition in the building.
D is a belt passing around the armor inclosing the body and serving the purpose of keeping the smoke from getting up into the interior of the armor. The flexible tubeC also performs the purpose of a speaking-tube.
If a person without the building desires to communicate with a person in armor Within the building, he can place the end of the airtube C to his mouth and converse with him as through a common speaking-tube, one side of this air-tube at or near its outer end near the pump being provided with the ordinary hinged opening and attention-whistle, as are used and found in common speaking-tubes. It the person in armor desires to signal to a person without he closes the tube 0 in any ordinary manner, and the pressure of air produced by the air-pump Without exerts an increased pressure upon the tube suflicient to blow the aforesaid Whistle.
It will be observed that the head-piece B can be buttoned to the jacket A and the jacket A buttoned about the body, or We may construct them all in one piece, as desired.
What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A firemans suit consisting-of a jacket having a head-piece upon its upper end, said head-piece being provided with a window closed by some transparent material, a mouthopening provided with a valve for the purpose of allowing the foul air to escape, a flexible tube (J, entering the armor fromthe under side and terminating therein, and means for forcing air into the armor, said tube 0 having multiple branch tubes connected thereto just outside of the, armor, each of said tubes being provided with a mask or head-piece adapted to be placed over the head of the person found in a suffocating condition, substantially as described, for the purposes as set forth.
