TUBE-ROLLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, rate.
Application filed October 29, 1917. Serial No. 199,064.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, AXEL T. Jonnson, a citizen of the United States, reslding at v Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tube-Rolling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device to be applied to the sealed ends of tubes of relatively ductile metal, such as lead, and containing tooth-paste, shaving soap, or other material, adapted to be squeezed from an opening in the tube, for rolling the tube at its sealed end upon itself, to effect the discharge of the material from the tube as use of the same is required.
My primary objects are to provide a novel, simple and inexpensive form of tuberolling device or key, which may be readily used for theabove-stated purpose on tubes of different sizes and formed of difierent gaged metal, and whereby the flattened tube may be rolled with sufficient tightness about the key to cause all of the contents of the tube to be squeezed therefrom, and the key may be readily removed from the tube in coiled form about the key, for its repeated use in performing the tube-rolling function.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved tube-rolling device, showing it applied to operative position on the sealed end of a tube, such as that which it is adapted to operate with, and which may be a tube of tooth-paste. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the key shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, an end view of the key as applied to the tube in Fig. 1, this View showing the lower end of the tube and the view being taken from the left-hand side of Fig. 1.
The key as shown, and which is preferably made from metal stamped into shape, is formed of a channeled portion 4 terminating at one end in a finger-grip section 5, preferably apertured at 6 in order that it may be suspended on a hook when desired. The channel 7 of the portion 4 and which extends lengthwise of the latter, is formed of the conver 'ng side walls 8, preferably converging su stantially throughout their entire length and depth as shown, to form.
a substantially V-shaped channel, the walls 8 converging toward each other from the handle-equipped end 5 of the device toward the opposite end thereof, as represented in Fig. 2, and inclinin downwardly from the handle-equipped en 5 toward the opposite end thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. It Wlll thus be understood from the foregoing that the key so formed tapers from its handle-equipped portion to its opposite end, for a purpose hereinafter stated. In the use of the key it is applied to the sealed end of the tube from which the contents are to be squeezed by rolling the closed end of the tube upon itself, to cause the sealed end, represented at 9 of the tube 10 to extend into the channel The key is then rotated, the operator holding the tube 10 against rotation and maintaining the end 9 in the groove 7 whereupon the material is squeezed from the tube 10 through its cap-equipped portion 11, the tube rolling upon itself around the key.
By forming the key as stated, the key is not only adapted to fit with the desired snugness, the sealed ends of tubes formed of metal of different thicknesses, but the tube is caused to wind upon the key with the desired tightness for squeezing the material from the tube without undue binding.
Furthermore, by reason of the formation of the key as stated, the side walls of the channel 7 are held rigidly apart during the winding of the tube upon the key, preventing undueclamping action of the key upon the end 9 of the tube, and this feature, combined with the idea of making the key of tapering form, readily permits of the withdrawal of thekey from a coil of tubefor its application to another tube to be rolled.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tube-rolling device formed of a member tapered lengthwise thereof and containing a longitudinally-extending channel with its walls converging toward the bottom of the channel and presenting a channel of substantially V-shape in cross-section.
2. A tube-rolling device formed of a sheet of metal bent upon itself to form a channel extending lengthwise thereof with its walls upper and lower edge-portions of each wall converging toward the bottom of said chanconverging relatively to each other, lengthnel and presenting a channel of substanwise of sa1d device in the same general di- 10 tially V-shape in cross-section, the said walls rection as said walls converge, to cause said 5 converging relatively to each other from one device to present a double taper, for the purend of said device toward the opposite end pose set forth.
thereof lengthwise of the device, and the AXEL T. JOHNSON.
