Patented Apr. 14, 1931 PATENT OFFICE UNIT-ED STATES .TAMEs E. GUNTER, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND CONTAINER Application led March 17, 1927. Serial No. 175,965.
Y My invention relates to new and useful improvements in. closures for containers and more particularly to one in which the cap retaining means may be readily removed WiJhOut destroying the further usefulness of the cap or the container.
object of my invention is to provide a V sealed container which may be economically ,-manufactured, and which can be readily and lo easily opened withoutthe use of anytool and a cap, which after the container is opened, -may be satisfactorily used for closing the-container while the contents are being "used.' 1* y j Another objectof my'invention is to make `such a container in -which `the cap retaining memben-is compressible orpliable, at least onits outer surface, and in which one end fofthe member projects for engagement as a Another object of my invention is to make suchla ,container in whichthe cap retaining member has a resilient, or-spring like core to tend to` hold the member on the container.
525 Y Another objectof my invention is to make such a containerin which the cap retaining -member has a core which may be removed from'the member, so that the retaining eifec- Y tiveness of the member will be destroyed and thefcap may be; removed.
Another object of my invention is to so shape-or prepare the container thatrthe cap etaining member will be held in its proper position thereon.
Otherr objects and advantages will be apparent from the 4following description and v the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and in which: f
Figure `l is a front view of a container, cap and retaining member.
' Figure 2 is a cross sectional view on `line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows. r j
,F1gure 3 isa cross `sectional `view of a 45 modification of the container and cap shown in Figures l and 2 and embodying my invention.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The container 1 has an outwardly flaring mouth 2, shown in Figure 2 as also having a bead 3 for further strengthening the container.'l
Around the container mouth or opening is a cap retaining member 4 having a relatively compressible or pliable coating and a removable core 5 Yof some tensile strength. This member has a projecting portion 6 to serve as a handle to remove the member or to remove the core and thereby permit the coating to collapse and permit the removal of the cap. j
The cap 7 has an outer wall bent down and partly around the retaining member as shown at 8. This wall and the bending tool that bends it over the retaining member, slightly compress the member where it projects to form a handle, so that the handle does not weaken the seam or obstruct the bending tool. In Figure 3 this outer wall i has a strengthening bead 9 on it. Both bead 9 and wall 8 should have a little distance between them and bead 3 or flared mouth 2 to allow for clearance to permit the removal of the cap over the top of the container.
The cap 7 is preferably of the friction type as shown. Around the container body, at convenient intervals, are struck up projections 10 to hold the retaining member upon the container body prior to and during the application of the cap.
After the container cap has been applied, it may be removed by hand, by pulling down `on the handle 8. This will either cause the Y expansion of the cap wall and the compression of the retaining member to allow it to slide through the restricted exit between the container and cap walls, or it will pull the core from the member which will thereupon be unsupported and will either collapse itself or will be readily collapsible when the capV is raised.
covering may be of. any suitable material,
such 'as rubber, cloth, paper, soft metal, or
any otherv material which has snflicient resistance to thev compression and shearing vpressures between the container and cap.
The core likewise may varyfimeompositien, V'though preferably it is metal', its only necessity being Vthat' it have suiicient tensile-v Strength to be removed and-also tllat-i-tfhold expanded its covering.y Y Preferably the core has sufficient spring in it `to `hold the member' on the container body prior to the applicationofthecap. l iv As many. changes might be made the above a-rrangements and as many variations scope 'oftlie invention, itis intended that all the lfeatures, herein described. orl shown in A the'accompanying' drawings, shall' be: interpreted as illilstrative, andlthatv the invenc tion-'be limited only bythe fbllowing clarims.
