Description

June 23, 1931'.
H. KIELBERG SHEET METAL PACKAGE Filed Sept. 28. 1929 INVENTDR HTTDRNEY Patented June 23, 1931 UNETEB STATES PATENT; OFFICE HENRY KIELBERG, OF MARTIN'S FERRY, OHIO, ASSIGNOB T0 WHEELING STEEL COR PORATION, OF XVI-IEELING, VI EST VIRGINIA, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE I SHEET METAL PACKAGE Application filed September 28, 1929. Serial No. 395,885.
This invention relates broadly to sheet metal containers or packages of that type in which nested sections or joints of stove pipe are packed for shipment andstorage, and it has for its primary object to provide a package of this character having an end closure and provided with novel and inexpensive means whereby said closure may readily and conveniently be rendered removable.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of an end portion of my container as it appears prior to turning the terminal edge of said portion into securing relation to the closure;
Figure 2 is a section on line 22, Fig. 1, following the turning of said edge into closure securing position;
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the package with the end closure in place;
Figure a is a section on line M, Fig. 3; and
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the end portion of the package illustrating the use of the tearing member, or strip.
Referring to said drawings, 1 designates the body of the container which is made of light gauge sheet metal, preferably soft iron or unannealed steel, and which possesses tubular form with an end open to permit of the introduction therein of the nested joints of stove pipe or other material to be transported.
Provided in said body at a suitably spaced distance from the terminal edge of the metal of said open end, as will hereinafter be explained, and located adjacent to the usual side seam 2 of said body, is a small slot or aperture 3 through which is projected the free end of anarrow member, as the sheet metal strap 4. This member, which may, if
I preferred, be provided in the form of a length of wire, is introduced between the body 1 and an outwardly directed annular flange 5 formed on an end member or closure 6 when the latter is inserted within said open end of the body following introduction of the nested joints. Said member 4:, designed as a tearing strip, possesses a length approximating the circumference ofthe'tubular body 1 and has its opposite end folded back parallel to the inner side of the strap, forming a hook '7 which is disposed in looking engagement with the closure, being seated in anopen slot, notch or recess 8 provided therefor in the closure flange 5, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In closing the end of the package, the end 4? of the member 4- is first projected outward through the aperture 3, following which the tearing member is laid within the close embrace of the body 1., The hook end 7 of said member is then held slightly elevated while the closure 6 is inserted to a position wherein it seats upon the adjacent ends of the nested stove pipe (not shown) contained by said body and it is so disposed that the slot 8 of its flange 5 is located closely adjacent to the position of the body seam 2, asis clear- 1y shown in Fig. 2, following which said hook end is dropped into said slot 8. The terminal edge 1 of the open end of the container body is finally turned down into interiorly seating relation to the closure flange 5, as shown in Fig. 4.
The projecting tongue 45 of the member 4, which may have its end received beneath, or tucked under the adjacent fold of the side seam 2 of the container body, is adapted to be utilized for effecting such mutilation of the container body as is required to admit of ready access to the contents of the latter. When such access is desired, said tongue is grasped by means of-a suitable gripping tool, as a pair of pliers, and the member 1 is pulled rearwardly in a direction circumferential with respect to said body to effect tearing of the metal of the latter, as shown in Fig. 5, such tearing being continued until the side seam 2 is reached, thus almost completely severing from said body the inturned terminal portion by means of which the closure is retained in place. The said terminal portion may then be lifted and swung back to a position wherein the end closure 6 is released, whereupon the latter may be withdrawn from the container body.
Due to the soft character of the metal of the container body, comparatively sli ht resistance t tearing is ofi'ered when force is applied to the tearing member in the manner stated. Such tearing ordinarily occurs along two parallel lines adjacent to the opposite 5 edges of the strap, there being thus removed ahead of thestrap-a narrow irregular strip 9, substantially as shown in Fig. 5. 7
What is claimed isl 1. A sheet metal'package comprising a.
10 'tubulai body, of readily v rupturable material,
having an open end, said body having an aperture therein adjacent to said end, a closure for said end having an outwardly directed annular flange provide dlwith' a recess-said closure being received within said'end in a position wherein} said recess is located ad'- j'acent to, said aperture, and a metal-tearing member interposed between said closure flangeandjsaid body in'embracing relation to the for1ner, one endi ofs'aid member having a hook end received in said recess and having.
its opposite end projected outward through i said operture, t he extreme endof said body being turned inward into interiorly 'seated relation to said-closure/flange. V
2. sheet metal package comprising a tubular body having, an open end and provided withan aperture adjacent to said'end, v a closurehaving fan annular-flange provided 7 V witha recess, said closurebeing adapte'dfor introduction withinrsaid end with its flange extending outwardly andwith said recess locatedadj acentto saidaperture, and a'metal- V tearingmember adapted to be positioned intermediatesaidbody andsaidfiange and having; and: endprojecting outwardly through 1 said aperture, said,,member having its 0ppositef end: bent back toforma hook for engaging in s'aidrecess, the, extreme edge por- 40 tion of saidend of'tl'ie body being adapted to be turned .inward into interiorly seated relationto said closure flange; f a
3.. A sheet metal package comprising a tubularbody; having open end: and provided' with an aperture adjacent to said end,
, af closure for introduction; within said end,
said closure having an, annular flange, and a 7 metal-tearing member adapt'edjto be closely fitted bejtweefic said, flange and said body in circumferential; embracing relation to the former, said member having one end attached 7 to said coveri adjacent; to the position, ofsaid body aperture and it'sopposite end projected outwardlycthrough saidjaperture,
I, In testimony whereof, I afiixmy signatur'e.= HENRY KIELBER'G'.
