PATENT OFFICE.
ANTONIO QUIROLO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPITTOON-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,757, dated April 16, 1872.
Specification describing a newand Improved spittoon-Chair, invented by ANTONIO QUI- ROLO, of the city, county, and State of New York.
Figure 1 represents a side view, partly in section, of my improved spittoon-chair. Fig. 2 is a top view, partly in section, of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in chairs, or rather to an augmentation of their usefulness, by the connection with them of spittoons that can be swung out of the way under the seats, or made to project from the sides for use. The invention consists, consequently, in the combination of a pivoted or hinged spittoon with a chair.
A in the drawing represents the seat portion of a chair of suitable form and kind. To the side of the seat-frame is hinged a plate, a, which, on the inner side, carries a spittoon, B. A spring, I), bears against the inner side of the plate a, with the tendency of swinging the same outward. A spring-catch, 01, however, which is connected with the chair-frame, holds the plate a locked, so that the spittoon will be concealed under the seat.
When the person occupying the seat touches the spring-catch d to clear the plate a, the spring b will swing said plate outward, as in the lower part of Fig. 2, thereby exposing the spittoon to view and use.
A chair may have one spittoon only, or two,
as in Fig. 2-4. 0., one on each side. The spittoon may be made detachable, to be removed for cleaning, &c.
To invalids and others a chair thus arranged will be a great convenience, as well as to those not requiring its comfort, from whom the spit-v vtoons will be concealed the greater part of the are thus enabled to adjust the chair-back at pleasure without the aid of others, as they can swing it back by slight pressure, and forward with the aid of the springs g.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a chair and movablespittoon, as set forth.
2. The rods 0, catches f, and springs 9, combined with a hinged chair-back, as specified.
ANTONIO QUIROLO.
