To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY FREUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaukegan, in the count of Lake and State of Illinois. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Win- I dow-. creens. of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to an improvement- .in window screens. and more particularly to a screen which is so constructed that it may be attachedto a window sash in such a manner that as the sash is opened the screen will he automatically carried to a position to fit over the opening, meanshein'g provided to take up the screen as the window is again brought to the closed position. 1
An object of my invention is to provide a screen of the t vpe above described which is so constructed that itmay be fitted to windows as installed in a completed building or may be set in place during the con-- struction of the building. and 'which pro sents the screen structure in such relationthat the outer edge thereof ma be detachahlv comwcted with the window sash in a. relation to be raised and brought over the opening as the window may be opened or to remain in its normal relation irrespective of the movement of the window, when the attaching means is not. fitted in place.
A further object is to provide means to guide the screen in the proper path of movement at its edges while at the same time absolutely precluding the possibility of open spaces being left at the edges through which insects might pass; and to provide means which will take up the screen as the window ma) be again closed and will act. to held the screen taut and propel-iv stretched when the same is attached to the window sash to be drawn in place over the opening left by movement of the same.
lVith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter set forth in connection with the drawings and then more particularly pointed outin the claims.

In the present disclosure I have illustrated the device as being fitted in place on the inside sill of a window. and the case 1 is shaped so that it rises to have the greatest height adjacent to the inner edge of the sill and-is then brought down in a gradual slope as indicated at? so that at the outer edge of the sill adjacent to the sash rail 3 the case is comparatively low thus permitting access to be had frcelv to the sash lift +l. From the above it will be seen that a is parstructure is provided which is adapted to be applied to a window as. already installed in a completed building and at the same time does not in any way interfere with opening and. closing of the window.

ilhc metal guide plates 7 and 8 are fitted on the sash strips 9 and 10 at the opposite sides of the. window. and as is better shown in Fig. 7 these guide plates have the outstanding; flange portions 11 and 12 thereon which form the guide wa l3 therebetween to receive the edge of the screen. the guide members 7 and 8 being so mounted that as a length of screen may pass out through the opening 6 of the case, it may rise up in a vertical frame and be guided in the slot 1.
The bearing members 16 and 17 aremountcd within and secured on the end of the case 1, and these bearing members are provided" with the bearing openings 18 which are disposed adjacent to the opening 6 from the so that the idler roll 19 may be fitted therein and will be adjacent to the opening. The bearing member 16 has a squared socket 20 formed at a point spaced from. the bearing opening 18, and bearing member 1'? has a bearing openin 21 provided in corresponding location, these hearing and socket openings being provided to receive the pintle end 22 and the squared end 23 of the talre up roller 24. This take up roller 24: is constructed somewhat after the manner of the usual spring shade roller and the spring mandrel 25 has the spring 2-6 mounted therearound to normally exert force to turn the roller 24 in one direction, it being understood that the pawl or ratchet or other holding means is not provided to lock the roller against turning under the impulse of the spring.

By this arrangement of the-hooks, they may be either inserted in the keyhole shaped slots 29 of the sash lift and will in this relation cause the screen strip 27 to be unwound from the take up roller 24, or when the screen is not to be used, as in the case that the'window is to be washed, the hooks 30 and 31 may be released from the interfittcd mounting in conjunction with the sash lifts and upon being turned down to rest in the notches 33 and 34 will be embodied in the'main lines of the binding strips 28, in this way being so placed that they will not catch in the clothing or upon the cloths which may be used to clean the window. It will be understood that the spring 26 is constantly exerting turning substantially sash is delicately balanced, this drawing force exerted upon the screen strip 27 may be sufficient to overcome the counterbalance of the weights and may exert a tendency to draw the sash down, under which circumstances it will of course be understood that the sash might be worked up or that the window might have. a lock of the eccentric type mounted on the sash strip to bear against the sash and to hold the same against return movement to the closed position under the action of the spring 26.
While in the above description and in the drawings I have illustrated the device of my invention as being applied on the upper side of an inside window sill, it will of course be apparent that where a new window is being installed or where a building is under construction, the case 1 might be built in below the inside sill and under these circumstances, the sash strips 9 and 10 will be continuous as in the usual window construction and also the guide members 7 and 8 will be brought down to have their lower ends bear against the upper side of the inside sill, and also it will be apparent that changes and modifications might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the various parts of the structure as hereinbefore set forth either in the use of the same in the building construction, or in. the use as is herein disclosed, in view of which fact I do not wish to be limited to the exact disclosure.
