Description
UNITE To all t indy come@ c, `Be it knownfthat I, LE'MUEL `l f ftMuELT. WELLS, or CINCINNATI, omo.
ParNTINe-rnnss.
T. WELLS, of
` Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have inf powerful crank. i c p 7 QIt is my aim in ,thisyinventionto extend vented afnew and usefullmprovement in )Printing-Presses; and -I do hereby declare the following `tobe Aa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being` had to the annexed drawings, kmaking`part of this specification. w
It being necessary; for convenience offeedf ing that the platen yshould stand at or about an angle of thirty` degrees "from the` horizontal,` it4 is customary-ein jorder to secure the c Y above positionlandL atthe same time :to geconomize theWpOWerVeXpended in opening and.. c `closiI`1g"the press,`t0 give the `type bed a `-leaning position ,forward. This feature isy objectionable, particularly in printing.I large c forms, becausethe central". type, being ineiiif cientlysustained, `are `lialoletobe shaken out byythe `motion of the` press, and this takes `placeyoccasionally, levenfwhen the clamps are forced so tight, as `toinjurethe type which" is situated at themargin. Another circumstance which renders the swingingplaten ill adapted tot" large sheets, is the great c power that is required to swing thearms and platen sufficiently to!` afford the requisite ,c openingforlfeeding andffdelivery."
B fmyplan of construction I am able to produce a wide opening byfmeans of a short the usefulness lof( the vibrating. press by presenting `the bed and.` platen' 1in` their` most `convenient respective "positionsboth "for printing and 1for"feeding without too great an expenditureof power in swinging the farms, and without"theliability ofdisplacc ing the type.
In the accompanying `lrawings Figure 1 "lis a side view of my' press: i Fig@ is a back j view thereof. Fig.` 3 isa Ifront view.
`The actuatingfmechanism, and thevarious i devices for gathering, udistributing and apc y plyingthe ink, not diering essentially from other plans now in use`,need no specific description.
The bed ijszpermanently attacked in a vertical or somewhatjback leaning position to the` frame. `The "arirns (V) may be vi- `brated by` theusualcrank (R) andpitman (S). -'Ihev1eng`th` of fthe latter being ad- The sheets justable by a suitable screw (T) or its equivalent. The platen (V) instead of having a uniform vibration with the arms (V) is capacitated for a distinct rotation upon a pivot This distinct rotation is effected by the reaction of a stationary pin (N) projecting from the frame, and against which-at a certain stage of its opening motionthe lower portion of the platen impinges: this results in a compound motion of the platen as follows; The platen .at first moving with the arm a distance suiiicient to lift the sheet square 01T of the type,
Vthen -impinging againstthe pin (N) the .lower edge, is held nearly stationary, while the outer -or upper edge, immediately sinks or settles down so as to present the platenin any approach to a horizontal position that may be deemed to best facilitate the action of feeding. f
being customarily pointed (adjusted toy `their place) at their lower edge this nearly stationary condition of the lower)` part of the platen at the time of feeding is of the greatest convenience, and very much eXpedItes and facilitates the accurate `placing of the sheet-the hand not having to place and adjust the sheet upon a retreating surface. `The facility for any desired opening of the platen, without much eX- Vpenditure of power, and also the secure position` of the type, enable me to apply this fmost economical form of press to much larger impressions than are nowl practicable. i
When not under the action of the pin (N), the lower edge of theplaten is held down 'firmly against the arlns (V) by a spring X and rod (W) or this service may be performed by a cam or Weight. I therefore donot desire to be understood as conforming my claim to any specific means of retraction.
. I claim as new and of my invention- The platen (U) hinged or pivoted to vibrating arms (V) in combination with the stationary pin or pins (N) and retracting `springs (X), or equivalent devices for the purposes explained.
` L. T. WELLS.
