A R. SPIELBERGER.
FOUNTAIN COMB.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-31. 19:7.

IN'VENTOR WITNESSES llld Ann 1%. SPIELBER-GESR, or ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
EOUHTAIDFGOMB.
Application filed August 31, 1917.
"o (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'Asn R. Srrnrceaona, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Combs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combs, and more particularly to that class thereunder known. as fountain combs.
The primary object of the invention resides in the production or a comb oi the above stated character, wherein a novel construction of means is employed for :t'eeding the poinate into the hollow comb teeth, to.
facilitate the application of such directly to the scalp, without the excessive moistening of the hair or the usual manipulation of the lingers.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details or construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more .t'ully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the comb with the handle portion thereof in longitudinal section;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view;
Figs. 3 and l are cross s ctions on the lines 33 and 47-4: respectively of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a perspective detail of the pouch; Fig. 6 is a perspective detail of the handle the pouch therein, illustrating a slight deferring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, the fountain comb generally comprises a back 5 provided with a.
longitudinal passage 6 through which the medicainents contained in the compressible tube or pouch 7 are distributed to and through the communicating channels 8 in certain of the teeth 9 which are preferably broad and hollow, by means of a feeder to be hereinafter referred to. The inner end oi? the back 5 is prefeablv enlarged Lilo a head 3 and the inner end of the head is in turn reduced into a stud 5%, preferably threaded as shown.
The tube or pouch 7 which is of compressible material has at its inner end an enlarged rigid head '5 which is preferably hexagonal as shown, and iroru this head the S ecification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 19118. Serial No. 189,190. I
body of the pouch may taper slightly to its outer end, the latter being preferably pointed as shown at 12, and closed. Fixed through the center of the head 7 is a threaded nipple 11 adapted to be screwed onto anaxial socket (see Fig. l) -formed in. the inner end of the comb head 3 and communicating with the passage 5. Thus when the tube as a whole is turned with respect to the comb as a whole, the parts are screwed. together, and their relative rotation in the opposite direction disconnects these parts.
The handle lei is preferably of cylindrical external contour, rounded and closed at its outer end as at 17, and having an open mouth 15 at its inner end. Its mouth may be threaded as shown so as to screw onto the threads of tie stud l, with a set screw 16 employed to hold the handle against displacement. .Internally the handle is prefer- .bly hexagonal as shown at 20 to conform with the contour of the head 7. In the sides of the handle is a pair of longitudinally disposed slots 18 arranged diametrically. One of the walls forming each of the slots is provided with a series of teeth 19. The hollow formation of this handle provides within the same a chamber to accommodate the compressible tube 7, and the feeder for compressing or squeezing the tube is designated generally by the character 21.
Said feeder consists of a shaft 22 extend ing across the interior of "the handle and. having fixed upon it two small. gears 23 which mesh with the teeth 19 in the slots 18, a spherical presser or ball fast on the shaft within the handle and of a size to compress the pouch C" as best seen in Fig. 1, and a small knob or cross bar 24 secured to one end oi the shaft outside the handle 14;. By grasping this cross bar and rotating the shaft, the gears tra vol on the teeth and cause a progressive movement. of the entire feeder 21, t 1e ball rolling on the tube in a manuer which will be clear and compressing it slowly so that its contents will be forced through tlie nipple 11 and along the passages and 8, to be distributed by the broad comb teeth 3' directly onto the scalp without excessive Wetting of the hair or the usual manipulation of the fingers.
A slight amplification is illustrated in Fig. o, where a sleeve :26 is slidably mounted round the handle lei, and the shaft 22 has i ended at 2? through bearings trunnious e...
in both sides of the sleeve as shown. Thus I when this shaft is turned and the feeder progresses, the sleeve slides along the handle and carries with it the bearings for the shaft.
In assembling the parts of this device, the nipple 11 may be screwed into the socket first if the mouth 15 of the handle is simply slipped onto the stud 4 and held by a set screw 16. But if said mouth and stud are threaded as shown, the tube will be first put into the handle and its head 7 pushed ack beyond the mouth into the hexagonal interior 20 thereof, and then when the bandle is screwed onto the stud the nipple will be simultaneously screwed into socket. A reverse motion separates the parts.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates; and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is 1. A fountain comb comprising a back provided with a passage and teeth having channels communicating with said passage, a handle therefor, a compressible pouch arranged in said handle and having connection at the rear end of the passage, and means rotatably mounted in the handle for pressing the pouch'to distribute the contents thereof into said channels, substantially as and for the purpose Specified.
2. A device of the class described comprising a comb back provided with a passage communicating with certain of the teeth, a slotted handle connected at one end to said back, a compressible pouch in said handle and communicating with the passage, and means mounted in the slots of the handle for compressing the pouch, substan tially as and for the purpose specified.
