UNITED STATES PATENT EEIcE.
HEZEKIAH HE\VITT, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
PEN-HOLDER TIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,298, dated March 29, 1887.
Application tiled October 5, 1886. Serial No. 315,361.
(No model.) Patented in England Jnnuaryflfi, 1883, No. 4-29.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HEZEKIAH HEWITT, of Birmingham, England, have invented a new and Improved Pen-Holder Tip, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to metallic and other tips of pen-holders-that is, that portion of the pen-holder in which the handle fits at one end and the pen at the other end. Such tips are usuallyof circular form and uniform diameter throughout their length.
My invention consists in a pen-holder tip, made of metal or other suitable material, which is of greater exterior diameter at its middle portion than at its opposite end parts, whereby certain advantages, as hereinafter named, are secured; and it furthermore consists in a special construction of the same, substantially as hereinafter shown and described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents an exterior longitudinal view of a pen-holder tip embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal view of a penholder complete having my improved tip and with pen attached, the whole being represented as resting upon a fiat surface, to illustrate one advantage accruing from said tip.
A is the tip of greater exterior diameter at its middle portion, b, than at its opposite end parts, 0 0, into one of which latter parts the handle B of the pen-holder fits, while the other of said parts is suitably constructed and fitted as, for instance, by an interior plug or cup. piece, d-to receive and carry the pen 0.
The enlarged middle portion, 1), of the tip is preferably in the form of a gradual swell from like diameter with the ends thereof.
its opposite ends where the same adjoin the reduced parts 0 cthat is to say, of a reverse taper fromits highest part. This shape of the enlargedmiddle portion, 1), is most favorable to the placing of the thumb and fingers on it, and the enlargement of the tip at its middle portion insures a much firmer grasp of the fingers and thumb upon it than when the intermediate or middle portion of the tip is of Furthermore, by making the tip intermediately of its length of an increased diameter relatively to its ends the pen end of the tip is prevented from coming in contact with and inking the table or other surface on which the pen-holder may be laid when not in use, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
The enlarged intermediate portion, 1), of the tip is provided with numerous teats or protuberances, as at e, to further extend or facilitate the grip or hold on it and to permit of air circulating between the tip and fingers, and so prevent heating when the tip and holder are in use.
I am aware that it is not new to employ in connection with a pen-holder a rubber sleeve as a rest for the finger ends.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The pen-holder tip A,having an externallyenlarged reverselytaperingintermediate p0rtion, I), and reduced opposite end parts, 0, said tip also having upon its exterior numerous protuberances or teats, substantially as shown and described.
IIEZEKIAH HEWITT.
