Description

WILLIAM wAKELY. Improvement in Brick Presses. 125,636.
Patented April 9, 1872.'
. Mea/Zed NI'IED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM WAKELY, OF TAU'NTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRICK-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No; 125,636, dated April 9, 1872 antedated March 27, 1872.
To allpersoas to whom these presenfsmaycome:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WAKELY, `of Taunton, of the county of Bristol, of the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new anduseful BriclrPress, which I term Duplex Brick- Press; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure lis a top view; Fig. 2, a front elevation; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4, a transverse section of it.
The invention consists mainly in the combination of a single movable cover, and its locking devices with two molds and their pistons, and the operative mechanism of the latter; all being arranged, constructed, and applied to a frame in manner substantially as described and shown, whereby, while one mold is in the act of being lled or supplied with clay or material to be compressed, the material or clay may be in the act of being compressed in the other mold.
In the drawing, A denotes a table or frame, for supporting the operative parts, there being ixed in the top of such table, or arranged as shown, two molds or matrices, B C. Between the said molds and hinged to a standard, a, is a movable cap or cover, D, which is arranged and to be made so as to be capable of being moved over and down upon, and so as to cover at will either ofthe mouths of the molds. There is a notch, b, in the cover to receive either of two locking-arms, E E, arranged and formed as shown, and pivoted to the table. There is a piston or platen, F, in each of the molds, such pistons or platens being fixed on the upper ends of two toothed racks, G G, that engage with a pinion or gear, H, arranged between them and fixed to a horizontal shaft, I, disposed as shown, and provided with a handwheel, K. A stirrup, L, fixed to the frame beneath the racks serves to arrest the downward movement of either of them. Over the gear and between the two racks, and arranged so as to cover the shaft, in manner as shown, is a doubleinclined spout or conduit, M, whose duty it is to intercept any falling clay or material that may be likely to descend from either of the molds upon the pinion or shaft, and divert it therefrom.
In operating the said press a workman is to turn the hand-wheel first in one and next in the opposite direction. Preparatory to any upward movement of either piston the cap or cover should be turned over upon the mold of such piston, and be locked down while a piston may be descending-its mold is to be supplied with clay or material to be pressed. Bricks may thus be formed alternately in the molds.
I claim* 1. In the duplex press, as described, the two molds, B C, the single cap D, the locking-arms E E, the pistons F F, and their operative racks Gr G, pinion H, and shaft I, arranged and combined essentially in manner and to operate as specified.
' 2. I also claim the combination and arr-an gement of the stop-stirrup L, the two moldsB C,
the single cap D, the locking-arms E E, theI pistons F F, and their operative racks G G,
pinion H, and shaft I, all as set forth.
8. I also claim the double inclined spout or conduit M'the shaft I, the pinion H, the racks G G, the pistons F F, the molds B C, the cap D, and the locking-arms E E, combined. and arranged in manner substantially as described, the said shaft being provided with a handwheel, or its equivalent, for operating it in the manner as explained.
WILLIAM WAKELY.
Witnesses It. H. EDDY, J. It. Snow.
