LINK-PRESS FOR MAKING EARTHENWARE, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,432, dated September 21, 1886.
Application filed July 13, 1886. Serial No. 207,870. (No model.) Patented in England March 31, 1885, No. 4,060.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be'it known that we, FREDERIO GEORGE JOHNSON and ALFRED JOHNSON, both subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, and residents of Hanley, in the county of Stafford, England, have jointly invented certain Improvements in Link-Presses for Making Earthenware, &c., (for which we have been granted a patent in Great Britain,dated March 31, 1885, No. 4,060,) of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of presses known as link-presses, wherein a toggle or linkis employed.
The press herein described is primarily designed for use in the manufacture of earthenware; and the principal object of our invention is to provide means whereby the movement of the ram, and consequently the amount of pressure on the article being mold-ed, may be regulated.
In the drawing which serves to illustrate our invention the press is represented in side elevation.
A represents a substantial frame mounted on a base, 13.

This bracket has a cap, 0, secured to it by screws 1) b, and in the bracket and its cap is formed the guide in which plays the ram D of the press. IVe have not deemed it necessary to show the mold or die, whichis secured to the end of the ram, but removably, so that it may be conveniently removed and replaced.
E is the fulcrum of the toggle, which is formed on the end of a screw, E, which passes through the upper part of frame A, and is provided with jam or look nuts 0 0, whereby thefulcrum may be adjusted and set upor down, as required. I

To the shaft I is secured an operating-lever, J, on the short arm J of which is adjustablymounted a counterpoise, K, of sulficient weight to raise the ram and balance the other parts. The fulcrum is adjusted and set up or down by the nuts 0 to suit the work to be done, and when the lever J is depressed it acts through shaftLarm H, and conneeting-rodJ to straight 6c en the toggle and depressthe ram D. When the links F of the toggle are brought to a straight line, the ram will have reached the extreme point of its downward movement, and any further movement of the lever J will 6 5 only serve to relieve the pressure by lifting or retracting the ram. Now, by setting the fulcrum E lower down, the ram'may be made to move farther down before it begins to lift, and, conversely, by setting the fulcrum higher up, the end or limit of the downward movement of the ram will be correspondingly raised. Thus by means of nuts 0 the limit of the downward travel or movement of the ram may be exactly defined and determined to suit the class of work, and nothing is left to the judgment or discretion of the operator, who may be unskilled.
\Ve do not limit ourselves to the precise construction of the frame-work and parts of our press, as these may be varied somewhat Within the knowledge of a skilled workman without departing materially from our invention.
Having thus described our invention, We 8 5 claim- 1. The combination, with the mm D and its guide, of the fulcrum-screw mounted in the frame of the press, the adjusting-nuts c c on said fulcrum-screw, and the links F F, congo neeted together at z and to the fulcrum-screw and ram, respectively, at .90 and a all arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
