SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent .No. 328,552, dated October 20, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AARON \VARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines or Presses for Pressing Bricks, &c., of which the following is aspecification.
My invention has reference to compressing machines or presses; and it consists in eccentrio and the toggle mechanism combined with suitable connections, substantially in the manner hereinafter specified, by which great power may be exerted with an expenditure of a small amount of force, and in details of construction, all of which are fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the ac companyiug drawings, which form a part thereof.
The object of this invention is to form a cheap and yet powerful press especially adapted to hand-power and suitable for compressing paving and building blocks which are molded from plastic material.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a press embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of same on line at m. Fig. 3 is a side elevation with a part broken away, showing the construction of the connection between the eccentrics and the toggles, and Fig. 4 is a crosssection of same on line 3 y.
A A is the frame of the press, and B is a table thereof. 0 is the guide-box secured to the cross-timber A, and guides the reciprocating dies or plungers D and E, and by which the material is compressed and ejected. Plunger D is connected with the top of the frame by a toggle, F, and the hinge-point of two bars forming said toggle is connected with the side of the frame by another toggle, G, the hinged point of the latter being provided with a shoe, J, by which it is moved vertically by an eccentric, H, secured to the same shaft h with the hand-wheel I. By rotating the handwheel the eccentric is moved around and straightens the first toggle, G, which by its action straightens the second toggle, F, imparting to the plunger or die D only a portion of the movement given to the shoe by the eccentric, thereby exerting great power with a Very small expenditure of force. The other die or plunger, E, is also connected to the top of frame A by a toggle, K, similar to the toggle F, and its joint is connected with the eccentric L by a shoe, J, similar to that referred to when describing the toggle G, and this eccentric is secured upon the same shaft Z with the hand-wheel M. If this hand-wheel is rotated the eccentric acts directly upon the single toggle K, and causes a large movement to the plunger or die E, the function of which is simply to eject the compressed material from the mold Nthrough the trap or opening formed in the table B when the slide 0 is withdrawn by the lever Q. It will be noticed that the plunger E carries the plate or die which fits into the mold, and when the plunger D is moved down about three-quarters of an inch it forces the plate down with it in compressing the plastic material. It is evident, however, that the said die-plate may be formed in two parts,one being secured to each of the plungers D and E. The mold N is shown as being formed rectangular. It may be any other shape desired, that shown being suitable for making paving-blocks. The top and bottom of these molds, however, are in all cases made open, so that the plungers or dies D and E may enter it from above to compress and eject the material, and so that the said material, when compressed,may pass out of the bottom of said mold through the orifice formed when the slide 0 is withdrawn.
The shoes J are formed as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, in which there are two parts, J, one of which has the solid portions J and the flanges J which latter extend over the flanges h on the eccentric and hold the said shoe thereto, and these plates are secured together by bolts R, and support between them the two anti-friction rollers W, which run in contact with the outer periphery of said eccentric, reducing the friction to a minimum.
S is a pin by which the toggles are pivoted to said shoe, as indicated in Fig. 4, and T are lugs extending out from the sides of the shoe and directly over the toggle-hinges and against which they rest, and which lug receives the wear of the said hinge and relieves cutting of 100 the pin S. The toggles are preferably made double, as indicated in Fig. 4, though single connected rods may be used if desired.
I do not limit myself to the details of construction, as they may be modified in various ways without departing from my invention. I am aware that toggle-joints have been used to actuate compressing-plungers prior to my invention thereof, and therefore I do not lay any claim to them per 86.
I claim- 1. In a press, the combination of a reciproeating die or plunger, a toggle held rigidly at one end and hinged to the die or plunger at the other, an eccentric or cam acting-upon said toggle, and a loose shoe hinged to the joint of the toggle and adapted to clasp the flange of the eccentric, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a press, the combination of a reciprocating die or plunger, two toggles, one of.
which acts upon the die or plunger, and the other of which acts upon the first-mentioned toggle, and an eccentric or cam acting upon said last-mentioned toggle directly upon its middle joint, by which a small amount of force exerted on the eccentric will produce a large amount of power at the die, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. .In a press, a compressing die or plunger and a discharging die or plunger, in combination with two sets of toggles and eccentrics or cams, each set acting independently of the other to put either of said dies or plungers into action, substantially as and for the purpose specified. v 4:. 5. In a press, a compressing die or plunger and a discharging die or plunger, in combinationwith two sets of toggles and eccentrics or cams, each set acting independently of the other to put either of said dies or plungers 'into action, a mold, a table, a trap or slide under said mold, and dies to allow the compressed article to be ejected and a lever to operate said trapor slide, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 6. The combination of the eccentric or cam H, having flanges h, with a shoe having re taining lugs or flanges J and rollers W, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. The combination of the eccentric orcam H, having flanges h, with a shoe having re taining lugs or flanges J, rollers W, lugs T, and toggles G, substantially as and for the purpose specified,
- 8. The eccentric or cam H, having flanges h, in combination with shoe J, formed of plates J, having flanges J bolts R, and rollers W, substantially as and for-the purpose specified.
9. The eccentric or cam H, having flanges h, in combination with shoe-J, formed of plates J, having flanges J lugs T, bolts R, rollers W, pin S, and toggle G, substantially as and for=the purpose specified.
