Description

-EMI'L RATH.
l Improvement in Stair Rods.
Patented April 9,41s72.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
EMIL RATH, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO MORITZ KRIKL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN STAIR-RODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,615, dated April 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, EMIL RATH, of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New vJersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stair-Rods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a front View of my stairrod, a portion of its face being broken away to expose the fastening. Fig.2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a stair-rod, the retaining iianges of which are set at angles of forty-five degrees toward its face and brought in such relation to each other that the rod will iit into the corners between the steps and risers of the stairs, and that the iianges can be made to catch over the heads of simple wood screws secured in the corners of the steps in a diagonal position, thereby dispensing with expensive and frail fastenings, and obtaining a stair-rod which produces a superior eii'ect.
In the drawing, the letter A designates my stair-rod, the retaining flanges a a of which are set at angles of forty-iive degrees toward its face-plate b, so that the saine will t into the corner of a step, one of the retaining flanges being brought to bear against the surface of the riser and the other against the surface of the step, best seen in Fig. 2. Between the edges of the two retaining flanges just sufficient room is left to admit the shankpf a common wood screw, c, and by securing two such screws in diagonal positions in the corners of the step a very simple and durable fastening for' my stair-rod is obtained, since by slipping the rod on said screws the retaining flanges are caused to catch under their heads, thereby holding the rod firmly up aga-inst the outward pressure produced by the carpet.
By placing the face of the stair-rod in an oblique position across the corner between the step and riser an effect is produced which is much superior in appearance to that of ordinary stair-rods; and, at the saine time, the carpet is held close into the corners of the steps, and it can be stretched without danger of binding or disen gagin g any of the rods; and, furthermore, the screws o can be readily adjusted to the thickness of the carpet, so that the rods will lie tight against the same under all circumstances.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A stair-rod made of a single piece of metal in the form of a triangle, the edges of which forni the retaining anges for securing it 11pon screws arranged diagonally in the angle between the tread and riser of the steps, substantially as set forth.
