mENTIFICATION-TAG LOCKET 0R HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1918.
Application led .Tune 20, 1917. Serial No. 175,747.
locket or holder, and it has for an object to provide a locket attachment for containing the identification tag usually worn by soldiers, and others, about their necks.
The invention broadly consists in an attachment for identification tags of that type which is worn about the neck and suspended therefrom by a chain or ribbon, said attachment being of an ornamental nature and designed for inclosing the tag and containing a photograph either of the wearer or other person which might aid further in the identification of the wearer.
The invention further resides in the specific features of construction hereinafter described in detail and succintly delined in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation of the locket or holder as applied to an identification tag, the suspending ribbon of the latter being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the locket opened, showing the arrangement of the tag therein.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 further showing the interim` construction of the locket.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 of a slightly modified form of the locket attachment, and Y Fig. 5 is still further a modified form of the invention.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the usual identification tag which may bear the name of the wearer, or other identifying character, and which is suspended or hung about the neck by a ribbon 2.
The locket attachment therefor comprises a casing consisting of two hingedly connected sections 3 and 4 that are secured closed by the spring catch 5. Either section may be provided with a photograph-retaining ring or frame 6 having a. transparent filling 7, as depicted in Fig. 2, or each section may be equipped with a retaining frame, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
The rim of each section is formed in its upper edge with a recess or cut-out 8 for the reception of the ribbon 2, said cut-outs opposing one another when the locket is closed. The section 4 is provided with a broad rim 9 for seating on the tag to hold the same Within the hollow portion of section 3 and thereby prevent undue rattling movement of said tag.
In Fig. 4 the cut-out 8 of one section is provided with a guard 10 for holding the ribbon within the cut-out and prevent dislodgment therefrom when the locket is opened, said guard consisting of a length of wire extending across the ribbon and having its ends soldered, or otherwise secured, to the rim of the section on opposite sides of the cut-out. The opposing cut-out is formed with end notches 11 to receive the ends of the guard wire when the locket is closed, as is obvious.
Fig. 5 illustrates a further embodiment in which the guard is formed integral with the rim by cutting away the outer portion of the latter to provide the cut-out 8. In either form, the suspension ribbon is threaded beneath the guard which latter serves to retain the former seated in the cut-out so that the locket may be opened and closed without interference from the ribbon which might otherwise become dislodged.
The locket may be of any desired and ornamental design, and although the same has herein been described in connection with identification tags, it is obvious that its use is not limited to such for it might equally as well be used by bathers to contain their locker checks, which are usually worn about their necks, or the tag might beemployed merely as a means of connection between the ribbon and the locket.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An identification member comprising a tag having a perforation adjacent its edge, a flexible suspending element for the tag passed through the perforation thereof, a locket attachment comprising a pair of sections hingedly connected to one another for closingl about the tag, being provided with opposing edge cut-outs for receiving the suspending element whereby the sections of the locliet attachment may completely close, and means for holding the sections closed.
2. An identification member comprising a tag perforated adjacent its edge, a suspension element secured in the perforation of the tag, a locket attachment consisting of a plurality of sections hinged together for closing about the tag, said locket attach-v ment having a cut out portion in the abutting edges of the hinged sections to receive the suspension element, and a strip like guard carried by one section and extending across the cut-out portion for holding the suspension element therein When the sec- 15 tions are opened.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
