PICKER-STICK CHECK FOR LOOMS.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patentedlteb. 5, 19in.
Application filed April. 30, 1917. Serial No. 165,539.
i Greenville, in the county of Greenville, State ofSouth Carolina, have invented a Vnew and usefulPicker-Stick Check for Looms; and l do hereby` declare. the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such `as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
ri`his invention. relates to an Vimproved picker-stick check for looms, and an object of the same is the pro-duction of a device ot this kind, whereby the picker stick, when.
subjected to the impact of the shuttle, in its outward` moven'ient is checked.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple, etilcient and very durable device of this kind, which will outlast the old style Ot leather check strap, such is used on Draper looms.
A further object is to provide a device ot this kind which will avoid successive repairs, as well as saving time that is wasted in making repairs.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
ln practical elds the details of construe tion may require alterations fallingv within the scope of what is claimed.
ln the drawings Figure 1 isa front elevation of a portion of apicking mechanism `at one side of a loom, showing the improved picker-stick check as applied thereto. v
Fig. 2 is a view' in side elevation disclosing the opposite side to that shown .in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectionalview on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. l is an enlarged detail perspective view of the picker-stick check mechanism detached.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 ot Fig. 4l.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6G oi Fig. t
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates a portion of one side or' a loom, and 9. the lay rocker-shaft having fast thereon the piclrer-stick stand 3, and 4L denotes the picker-stick. Projecting later ally from the picker-stick stand 3 and downwardly is an arm 5, and arranged in an opening 6 of said arm is a lateral stud pin 7 lVhere this stud pin 7 engages the arm 5, it is constructed rectangular, thereby preventing the stud pin from turning. @ne end of the stud pin beyond the rectangular part 7 is provided with a cylindrical en tension `S having threads. This extension. enters an opening of the lip-standingarm 10, and by means of the nut 11 which is threaded on the extension 3, the rip-stand- .ing arm 10 is held fixedly in position. `Mounted upon the pin 7 is a tubular sleeve 12. The other end oi3 the pin 7 enters au opening lll of the other end oi the sleeve. This opening 14- oi the sleeve is formed in the reduced end 13 of said sleeve. The roduced end ot the sleeve has mounted thereon a drum 16, there being a nut 15 on the outer end of said pin 7 and adapted to jam against the reduced end of said sleeve, thereby holding the sleeve securely in positionand against rotation relative to the piu 7. it is to be noted that the drum 1.6 is capable of a partial spring tensioned revoluble movement on the reduced end 13 ot the sleeve 12, due to the action oit the spring 17. rEhe coil spring 17 has one end passing through the wall oit the sleeve at one of its ends and engaged about the pin 7. The other end or the spring passes through the wall of the drum 16, and terminates in a hook 18, to which one end ot strap 19 is connected, the other end of the strap is connected to the picker-stick 4e by means of the clamp 20, which is secured in place by means of the bolt 21 and the nuts 22, which bolt 21 also secures the shoe 23 to the lower end or' the picker-stick. rilhis shoe 23 rests and rocks upon the upper flat surface ot the picker-stick stand 3. The shoe has a lug Qf-l extending downwardly and through an opening 25 of said stand, which, on its upper' face, has a lug 26, which enters the opening 27 of the shoe. Secured in the upper part of the rua-standing arm 10 is a reduced extension Q8 (rectangular in cross section) of the laterally extending pin Q9, by means of the nut 30 and lock nut 31. The pin 29 has a second rectangular portion 32, on which a fiber disk 33 is mounted, between the shoulder 34 and the outer face of the rip-standing arm 10. The body ot this pin 29 is larger in diameter than the rectangular part or portion 32, and mounted. on this larger portion is a Wood or ber disk 35. Carried by the disk thereby holding the parts together.
is an elongated lever 36 provided with Also mounted upon set screw 39 on the pin 29 is a, collar 40,A
between which and said disk 38, a coil spring .4l is interposed, thereby holding the disks 33, 35 and 38 frictionally in contact,`
in order to otter frictional resistance for the disk 35. The tension of the spring 4l may be increased or decreased by adjusting Vthe collar 40. A screw 42 is mounted in the elongated slot 37 of the lever 36, and there is a collar 43 on the screw adjacent the outer face of said lever 36. A suitable plate 44 is also on the screw 42 and has its ends 45a bent laterally to overlie the oppo site edges of said lever 36, there being a nut 45 threaded on the Ascrew to engage against said plate, in order to draw the head 4G of said screw tight against the end of the extension bushing 47 of said collar 43 It is to be observed that by loosening the nut 45, the screw 42 may be Vraised and lowered in the slot 37, so as to support the collar 43 in dierent adjusted positions. A suitable plate 48 is mounted rockably on the extension bushing 47, and one end of this plate terminates in a bearing sleeve 49, through which the rod 50 extends. A clamping strap 5l engages about one edge and two side faces of tliepicker-stick 4, and is secured thereto by means of a set screw 52. The ends of the strap receive a transverse bolt 53, on one end of which a pair of nuts 54 and a washer 55 are secured, to draw the ends of the strap 51 together and in engagement with the sleeve or lbushing 56, which is mounted upon the bolt 53. Oneend of the rod 50 is provided with an eye 57 which receives and engages the sleeve or bushing 56.V Mounted upon the rod and designed to beheld in adjusted positions by the set screws 58 aie set collars 59 and 60, there being a spring 61 interposed between the set collar 60 and the bearing sleeve 49.
From the foregoing, in connection with the drawings, it is to be notedk that when the loomA picks 0r throws the shuttle (not .bearing 49, `until .the set collar 59V will conf tact with one end of the sleeve bearing, after which the lever 36 is oscillated, and ,owing to the frictional Contact between the disks 33, 35l and 38, frietional resistance is otiere-l,
'thereby gradually liinitingthe picker-stick,
rather checking thev saine on its rearward f stroke. On the forward stroke of the pickerp stick in the direction of the arrow Z), the collar 60 pushes against the spring 6l,V which in turn pushes against tlie.bearing, sleeve, Y thereby holding itin Contact Vwiththesleeve ,j 49,and owing to the friction-a1 resistance between the disksY 33, 35 and 38, the picker-V stick is checked inV its rearward movement, at the limit of its stroke.
device may be adjusted accordingto the` stroke of the picker-stick.
The invention having been set forth, what :is claimed as new and useful is: i f
In a device as set forth, a stand having an upstanding arm, frictional resistant means carried by the upper end ofsaid avriny and provided with a slotted lever, a sleeve bearing, means for pivotally and adjustably connecting the bearing sleeve to saidslotted lever, a rod mounted in the bearing sleeve and having one end pivotally ,andV adjustably connected to the picker-stick, a pair of set collars on the rod, with oneof which said bearing sleeve is designed to contact, and a spring interposed between` the other set collar and the bearing sleeve, whereby the checking of the picker-stick in its forward and rear movements is effected.
In testimony whereof I have signedniy Witnesses LoTTin COLEMAN, ELisn MCCARLEY.
